RV-12 Brake Job / Tire Change

In this episode, we replace worn brake pads, repack the bearings, and reverse the tire direction on each wheel. Most RV12's have too much camber on the main landing gear causing the outboard edges to wear prematurely.
While not strictly necessary at 250 hours, we take this opportunity to swap out the brake pads.

I’ve been flipping the tires on each side around 100 hours. And replacement after another 100 depending upon the wear. Excellent information. 😃👍🏻

I’ve been flipping the tires around 100 hours and going another 100 hours before full replacement. Maybe the camber was designed to get more wear? Anyway, it was good talking with you at OSH last year. Hope to see you again this year. 😀👍🏻

Each wheel has 6* of positive camber. I added a 4.5* shim on each to reduce the camber to 1.5*. Tires now wear evenly across the tread AND the plane is less squirrely on the roll (far more stable)

this is a great idea, wonder if vans has anything negative to say about this and why this is not in specs to not have such a severe camber

@@Nick-kr5or EVERYone with an RV12 has this problem. And we all did the same thing --- reverse the direction of the tire to move the worn tread to the inside of the tire after ~200(?) landings. WHY Vans did this, I don't know; but suspect it had something to do with the 5 foot drop tests that they did at gross weight to prevent the tire from contacting the underside of the wing. Notice that they don't put that camber on their other planes AND the other planes don't have the hell-bent-for stout gear legs like the -12 has.

Just finished our rv-12iS - have you thought or looked into wheel pants and/ or fuselage fairings ??

if you're talking about the stabilator fairings.. they're a great addition and easy to do - maybe 1 day of work.

@@rcarsey I’m referring to the wheel pants fairings that go between the landing gear and the wheel pant fairing. Same up where the fuselage meets the landing gear.

@@fastfreddy Oh the Knots 2U fairings RV-12-80A.. I have thought about it.. I may do it this summer.. it looks pretty easy to do.. and for $120.. (the price of a hamburger), why not. I'd be really interested in doing something about the legs themselves -- they are rectangular.. which has a crappy drag coefficient.
