RV ELECTRICAL SYSTEM EXPLAINED - Wolf Pup Travel Trailer

I explain the basic electrical system in a travel trailer. Its a bit of a talking head episode but hopefully you get a couple nuggets of information out of it. I hope to do a more advanced version whenever I end up getting a bigger trailer. If you have any questions or would like clarification, please leave me a comment.

I think that “safe for lithium ion” sticker is cute. Haven’t found that magical toggle switch on my Grey Wolf either. The good news is it doesn’t matter. If you want to upgrade batt you might as well upgrade the tiny 50w panel and therefore upgrade the 14awg wire, and at that point you might as well get a lithium ion compatible charge controller.

Great video and explanation- thank you - you answered a lot of my questions. You’re doing exactly what I hope to do with my 2022 Wolf Pup - but I’m going to hire an electrician. Just don’t feel comfortable with the integration

My Wolf Pup 2021 16BLFQ has the WFCO WF8955PEC Controller claiming to work with Lithium batteries, but does not fully charge due to 13.5 charging voltage. A newer version controller does have a switch to allow higher charging voltage for Lithium batteries. So if you go Lithium be sure to check your controller.

Do you recommend a back up fuse for the converter? Can you change that on your own?

I'm trying to figure out how to use my 12v battery system to power my baby monitor. The camera portion of the monitor has a standard AC wall plug, but converts that to 5v DC 700ma. The goal is to be able to use it while boondocking (without running the generator). So, I assume my standard AC plugs won't work. The USB's should. I'm not sure if I need to install a new outlet in the wall that will run off of 12v, or if I need to get a new cable for the monitor (I've never had luck with this type of thing). My RV is a 2024 Wolfpup 17JW. I don't actually have it yet, but should have it next week.

You would most likely need to get an inverter or find a power adapter that produces the right voltage you need from a USB plug type

I have a wolf pup as well. Both usb ports on the bunk beds do not work. I don't see a fuse for them. Do you think both went out at the same time? Anything helps.

We are having problems with our awning blowing a fuse when we had to retract button but not the extend button. And the light does not come on beside the blown fuse like the other fuses for the living room, etc. I would say because it only has power running through when you have the control button pushed?

GREAT video! We just rented a wolf pup recently and I was told the refrigerator can run off the gas. It wasn't cold at all on the drive up to the campsite, but after I opened the propane valve, it cooled down fairly quickly. Was this running solely off gas or was it running off short power too? We were NOT hooked up to short power but were periodically having to charge the batteries with a small generator for 2-3 hours at a time to get full battery charge.

The newer pups are 12v fridge only. Which is what mine had.

Nick, Did you modify the tow vehicle to deal with the lithium batteries? I have been reading conflicting information regarding lithium batteries are hard on alternators, others say if you have less than 300Ah it’s not an issue. I only want one 100 Ah lithium to replace my AGM battery

Quick question - did you have to do any grounding on the AC side when you hooked up your inverter? I've been working on my setup based on yours but I find the AC side confusing.

The AC lines are grounded in the electrical panel. I also ran a copper line to the inverter case itself but that’s not required really.

I have a 2022 wolf pup 16FQ and recently my microwave stopped working. I removed it and plugged a fan in the outlet in the ceiling where the microwave was plugged. The fan worked so I chalked it up to bad microwave and purchased another one. I got the new microwave today and installed it. The microwave showed the time then I went to test it when poof it quit working too. I have checked output from outlet and it’s good. No breakers blown, no fuses blown, why does it keep killing microwaves? I took both the old and new microwaves in the house and plugged in they are dead. I’m so confused fused. Any help is appreciated!

I would get a test meter and measure the voltage coming from that outlet.

Thank you for explaining important things the way they should be explained. Please tell me, 2022 wolfpup16hq plugged in to generator, it surges when plugged in. there's a click in the batteries like it's trying to click over. It's trying to charge but can't. It's every 5 to 8 seconds. Thank you.

Converter/charger may be having issues. I don’t recall that behavior before I swapped to the new setup.

No, they are not because you’re removing the batteries from the system basically.

If you're hooked up to shore power 24/7, is there any worry about overcharging your battery?

Your converter/charger should be managing that charge automatically. It has different charge profiles based on the voltage the battery has aka its capacity. So if it’s already at full, it’s not actually “charging” the battery forever. It creeps the voltage down to a level that keeps the battery maintained at a full charge.

Lipprt now has a renogy solar awning 300 watt. Any comments on this

For the cost of that awning at that wattage I’m not sure we’re there yet and this I’m not convinced it’s worth it. I DO think however that this should be the direction the RV manufactures go as far as default install options.
