Hey buddy, I want to say thanks for the video. I noticed in the video that you ended up having to change your piston to a lighter one. So I had just put in a real mattress which was a big difference in weight. So I ended up going with the 125 lbs. I didn't notice the difference in our mattresses until I watched the video until the end of my 3rd viewing.

Did you have an issue with your strut being hard to close?
@dannyboy7777777
@dannyboy7777777 Ай бұрын
@@rvrguyd so the funny thing with this story. I originally ordered the 125 lbs and then watched your video. So the logical thing to do was return them and buy 30 lbs. I installed them and they didn't work so I bought 80lbs and those did not work either. So I bought the original order again and they should be here tomorrow. So between all my returns with amazon and visits to the post office. It's yet to be resolved. With that being said you video was very helpful on the installation. Let's hope 3 times is a charm. I'm hopeful that the extra weight will make it easier to close. I will keep you posted. And have a great camping season.

Do you happen to have a full size queen mattress that has some weight to it or do you have a short queen lightweight rv mattress? We swapped ours for a regular queen that has some weight
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd 11 ай бұрын
@@marineboi207ify at the time of making the video it was a short factory, Queen. I have since replaced the mattress with a thicker one.
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd 11 ай бұрын
@@marineboi207ify this was a short factory queen. I have since replaced it with an 8" and 1" topper short. It is heavier but the struts work fine. You don't want to make the mistake of getting a strut that is too strong as you won't be able to close the lid without possibly damaging the attachment screws/plywood.

Yup, I was recommended the 100# as well, WAY too strong. Wish I had done more research before buying.

Shouldn't the strut be angled the other way? With the top attachment closer to the edge of the platform, and the lower mount closer to the hinge/pivot?
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd Жыл бұрын
Nope. It is the correct angle. It works.
@kiwigeeknz

Agree. The original 80 pound struts would have worked of the lower mount was nearer the hinge.

Exactly. He's installed them upside down. If they were as you suggest he'd get a nice soft close action instead of that slam at the end.

I wonder if these can be used on a regular bed in my home to have more storage? I can get a Hatchlift Rv king size Bedlift Kit for $3.00 & can't pass that deal up.

I don't see why not so long as you have proper points of connection, and the weight is about the same.

People are saying this is wrong amd the bottom of the struts should be inwards and the top outward also that is why it called for 80lb struts. Looks like if it is done this way it won't slam shut?
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd 3 ай бұрын
Read the comments. No one is saying it is wrong in this video. I tried 80 lb struts and I could not close the lid. I guess you could mount struts back closer to the hinge, but I only needed the lid to open so far, and this positioning worked perfectly.
@randomkadrmas2630
@randomkadrmas2630 Жыл бұрын
It would work bette rif the rear mount on the bottom was closer to the hindge point and the top mount was at the front of the bottom of the matress support.

I don't know how or if it would work better since this setup works perfectly. Have you done an intallation yourself as you are suggesting?
@randomkadrmas2630
@randomkadrmas2630 Жыл бұрын
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd yes but I also saw a comparison video with two storage boxes that were mounted different directions. One slammed shut that was mounted with the bottom towards the front and one that closed easy with them mounted with the bottom towards the rear. But that all depends on the strength of the struts. I think you could use lighter struts with them facing the direction you did these, but I think stronger ones facing the other direction is the best way. Either way works though.

better to put 2 gas strut, both side
@rvrguyd

Two struts on each side would make it impossible to close the lid. You have to match the strut spring strength to the weight you are lifting.

Would be helpful if directions and video was more specific to strut install illiterates. I can’t see where the base connection is determined on the video. I see a tape measure at 6 inches. Determining parallel to what? Shows a yard stick but no instruction. Not helpful really.
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd
@craiglenhard-rvrguyd 2 жыл бұрын
It's a lot of trial and error. First pivot point was set at about 6" and it did not work out. Moved back to 4.5" which worked. Strut installation is not a "one installation fits all" situation and that was the point of the video. A strut could be used on a 1 lb cabinet lid or a 70 lb bed/storage area so there is not a single solution for all situations. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@craiglenhard-rvrguyd Thanks for this video, I am about to do this, and I know it will be a lot of trial and error for me too. Is that 1/2" plywood you are attaching the struts to? Looks a little twisty, how is it holding up. I read that if you want to stiffen it without adding furring strips there are fiberglass treatments you can use. Or could switch to a heavier plywood.
@rvrguyd
@rvrguyd Жыл бұрын
@@turbojav the bed deck is .5". I don't know that fiberglass would help based on tent pole experience I have. If you need more support I would consider hardwood. The struts are working great even after adding a 2" gel topper.

@@turbojav The first struts I bought were rated for more weight and I couldn't even close the platform so knowing the lifting weight is a first concern.

Very helpful video. Thank you. I have a travel trailer that has two fixed seats opposite each other with a table between. I can remove the table and convert to a double bed by pacing the table top in ridges on the seats. I am thinking of leaving the double bed in place 90% of time. Could I build a wooden box using 1/4” plywood as a platform between the seats and add the gas struts?
