5 Stars for this super useful and spot on important repair video: 2 of 5 stars are for the real time repair, that promotes confidence in us all to attempt our own repair. 2 more of the 5 stars TOTAL awarded are for the additional "sky cam" camera, positioned to catch the blow by blow wrench action. And the last 1 star of the 5 TOTAL stars awarded are for being certain enough about your tank being empty to just have a small baby sponge ready for a drip,...... or two ,....rather than a washtub! You guys are the gold standard,.....we need a six star system for you!

When I work around my sewer system I wear a full face shield (Western Safety) from Harbor Freight for $4. When you see the grey and black splatter on the face shield when you are finished hooking and unhooking you'll soon realize why wearing the face shield is a good idea.

Great video. I have a two year old Tiffin that the grey tank valve is really stiff so I am going ahead and replace it. I have seen some videos that advice drilling an 1/8” hole by the pull handle to spray silicone lubricant to keep it sliding smoothly. When finish screw in a self taping screw to seal the hole.

Very nice job. I really liked how you had the camera right there in plain sight of what you were working on. So many others talk, talk, talk about what they're going to do and then don't even film that part. They jump past it so you never get to see them actually do it. I was here to see how difficult it would be to get those seals lined up, and you showed it perfectly. Unfortunately, I'm replacing the gray and black valves in a 28-year-old 5th wheel and both valves are inside an insulated compartment. I had to cut a big access hole in order to even see them. Now it's a waiting game for the valves to show up. Thanks again!

After watching this video, I am confident that I can replace both the black and gray water valves on my 2022 Winnebago Travato 59kl. And I plan on recording a video of the process, the best I can, and posting it on my KZfaq channel to help others who experience a leaking black water valve on their Travato. Yep! been there done that... but! both of my valves are benith my Fifthwheel so I had to remove the underbelly to access the valve. it was the black tank valve so befor I started the job I flushed the tank real good. @williamgates4399

Yep, my travel trailer same way. The valves are just under the under-belly covering and you have to almost remove the whole under belly just to change one valve. Takes longer to remove and re-install the under-belly cover than changing the valve.

I came back to this the other day because I am now replacing my black water tank valve. I thought, "Oh this will be so easy because mine isn't in an enclosed space, it is under my rig and I can just get my tools into the spaces they are constricted by!"...and now I know that having a holding tank drain open to the elements will rust all your bolts and make this job SO MUCH MORE DIFFICULT! lol I broke one off and then doused the rest with PB Blaster. I'll re-visit them next week and have my Dremel tool handy to cut the other three if they don't budge. BUT, as always, thank you again for the video that gave me the knowledge to get it done!

@@RVgeeks Well things got worse in this process. My pipes didn't separate the way yours did in the video, the gray side separated from the tank during removal of the valve...which made it easy to finally remove the blank tank valve. Not so much putting it back in. The new seals got damaged when I finally got things crammed back in and since I'm leaving for a trip tomorrow I'm now using Flex Seal paste to make sure I'm not leaking poo-water. I can't stop combining commercials "Flex Seal-I put that SH*T on everything!" lol But, replacement part will be here when I get home and I'll figure out how to make things better for future valve replacements before I install. ;)

Love your videos... they're always worth the watch, even when one knows how to do the specific topic. If I might make two suggestions on this project: 1) You would likely have found this task much easier, had you used a smaller and less bulky 1/4" drive socket, rather than 3/8". The lighter weight and size of the smaller drive would greatly enhance the ease of use. This is particularly true for applications in which the valve is in the center of the underbody (like my Minnie Winnie). 2) When tightening your bolts/nuts, it would be better to alternate sides... first the one that was hardest to reach (as you did), then the one on the opposing side. Finally the remaining two (which will also be on opposing sides). Also, plan to tighten all bolts/nuts in at least two steps, somewhat more loosely first, then tighter on a second round... maybe even a third. This will reduce the likelihood of cracking the valve. Of course you would do the same in all such projects, such as tightening lugs on your wheels, etc. Keep your great videos coming!

@@RVgeeks You're welcome. Shortly after my comments, I started to replace my own gray water valve. I have a 2000 "Minnie Winnie" that I purchased in 2014. I keep in good shape and I've done many upgrades. I spend about 6 mo a year on my sailboat in the Bahamas and most of the rest of the year traveling in the RV. With COVID and various other challenges, I haven't been on the move since returning from the Bahamas in Oct, 2019 (where I had a front row seat to Hurricane Dorian). I'm about to head north for the summer and decided to replace the valve before I left. Unfortunately, my project turned out to be a bit more complex than yours. I doubt that the valve has been replaced in its entire 21 years. All four nuts were solidly rusted to the bolts and the heads of all the bolts were so badly rusted that no wrench (or channel lock) would grab them. I eventually got them out by grinding off the heads with my angle grinder. What took you 17-1/2 min to do and film took me over 4 hours (trying various other methods along the way)! Hopefully, it will last another 21 years (although it's highly unlikely that I will).

At your 11:00 minute mark, could have installed the bold in the other direction to make access to bolt installation easier and the nut for tightening. FYI. Tricks from previous installs. FYI. Then again, each rig has it's unique challenges for sure...............

He could have unpackaged the new valve with clean hands before unbolting everything - and checked that it was indeed the right replacement !

You had it easy. Our Coachmen has VERY tight fit as the valves are between the 2 tanks. The lines are relatively straight so the pipe will not bend or flex. So far I have only been able to remove the valves. Have not been able to expand the opening enough to allow the replacement valve to "slide" in.

We have some things on our rig that are like that, too.... not well-designed to be serviced easily. Always makes me wonder how they got them in there in the first place. Good luck with getting it solved, Roger. We know how frustrating it can be, but what a relief it is when it's all over. Hang in there!

Great video. The real time part is great. Mine would have more explicit language though LOL. We had a gray tank valve failure on our big trip this year. Handle came off in my hand as I was trying to dump. Luckily it was ONLY the gray valve. Repaired there in the campsite, in true Cousin Eddie fashion, which I’m sure the neighboring campers loved. Ours was a little harder to do because the valves are underneath, near the center of the camper. So instead of exploring coastal Maine, I spent half the day exploring the underside of our camper. Fun. In other news, I still maintain that you sound a lot like Elliot Spitzer; not a bad thing really, it’s a strong voice...you should consider voice acting or politics.

Voice acting and politics probably require the same skillset! 😂 Sorry to hear about your exploration in Maine, but glad you got it fixed.

Yea, I've changed both the black and gray valve. Five minute job but I do recommend dumping and rinsing the black one before changing it.

My black water tank handle is broken so I can’t drain the black water tank without replacing the valve. I have a 45 gallon waste transport container on wheels that could catch it all (to dump in septic tank) but then it will be more water weight than I can physically carry. Any ideas? Guess I’m gonna have to stop using it until it’s fixed.

Sorry to hear Bonnie. When you say your handle is broken, did the entire rod slide out of the housing, or did the handle just come off the rod. If the handle simply came off, you could pull it with a pair of pliers. If the rod came out, you can try inserting it back in and rotating into the right to try to thread it back into the blade valve. If the rod came out and you don’t have it anymore, you can try buying a new black valve and using the rod from it to do the same thing.
