RV Hydraulic Maintenance and Fluid Replacement | RV POPPING OR SAGGING [HOW TO]

Typically you can remove fluid from your reservoir and add anit-stiction fluid/fork oil (link below) and that will stop the popping or sagging from occurring. We had an extreme case of popping and sagging going on. After 4 years of Full time living in this unit taking away and adding fluid over the years, the transmission fluid and fork oil had thinned so much there wasn't enough viscosity to hold the weight of the RV. We contacted our manufacturer and Lippert to check before doing what we did.
We removed all of the fluid from the reservoir. We replaced the fluid with 1 gallon of Lucas Hydraulic & Transmission fluid and 2 qts of Fork oil. After replacing the fluid, we raised and lowered the jacks 2 times ensuring that the new fluid was pulled through the lines. Cleaning the jacks for us was also an important step as this hadn't been done for about 1.5 years. Environment build up and road grime can negativity impact your jacks. Best practice is to hitch up while doing this. We are stationary at the moment and had plenty of clearance to allow the jacks to dip the end cap all the way to the ground.

Great vid. You motivated me to take action on my Road Warrior toyhauler. Although I did not have a severe popping issue, I did have major issues with my main hydraulic slideout. More often than not, when it was time to vacate my site, the slide would not come in. I would spend 30-40 minutes working with it to get it in. It was so frustrating! Since I replaced the factory installed ATF with the Lucas hydraulic oil, the slide has been coming in every time I press the button. It is life changing! I also used a quart of the CAT fluid on the Lippert list, as there was a CAT dealer located 15 minutes from where I am staying. I appreciate the guidance you provided in your video. Once again, I am a Happy Camper! Safe travels.

Good tutorial. How did you know they used automatic transmission fluid in your system? Was that stated somewhere or was it more root cause analysis when the squeaks started?
@LonghaulLifesavers

Originally I assumed it was automatic transmission fluid because it was red where as most hydraulic fluid is clear. After calling The factory they confirmed that it was ATF

When you were having issues with your self leveling would it ever not self level ? Mine currently will not , front jacks will push the rv up but bleed off . I have to manually over correct to guess when it bleeds off , then manually put down the middle and rear jacks to level. Thanks

@LonghaulLifesavers
@LonghaulLifesavers 3 жыл бұрын
When you should change is really dependent on the original fluid put in the system. When you start to notice popping or sagging it’s time to change the fluid. The fluid I used in our video will work in any hydraulic system and there should be a mark on the reservoir to tell you how much fluid to install. Hope this helps!

Is your 5th wheel a Vanleigh model? I have a 2017 Vanleigh Vilano 325RL and we have had a problem with the hydraulic hoses bursting. Vanleigh is a higher end 5th wheel and I can't believe how flimsy the hoses are. I am thinking Vanleigh has a problem with this issue and will be contacting them about it. I ask because I too would like to use the fluids you are talking about. We also have a noise under the bed at night that isn't loud but consistent, drives us crazy and I am wondering if this might be the hydraulic popping you talked about. Nice video.
@LonghaulLifesavers
@LonghaulLifesavers 3 жыл бұрын
Rick Bain yes we have a 2017 365rl. The hydraulic lines are a lippert product. While laying in bed if you are hearing a popping noise it’s most likely the front jacks. We have been full time in it since September 1, 2016. The fluid was so old and watered down from years of use and adding fork oil. We needed something with better viscosity to stop the popping and sagging we were experiencing. We have had no issues since using the Lucas hydraulic and transmission oil. We also replaced on a friends rv (2018 325rl) and it has fixed her problems as well.
@Charles-in3zt
@Charles-in3zt 3 жыл бұрын
@@LonghaulLifesavers thanks, I guess my concern since we have had hose failures is if the extra viscosity might cause additional pressure on the hydraulic system that might cause additional failures. Any hose failures on either yours or your friends 325? Also where exactly can you see the hoses that go to the slide outs. I can see where the hoses that go to the jacks but not the slide-outs. One note, I think will keep us from being stranded in the future is I am having a 15 foot hydraulic hose made up that will reach from the front of the trailer where the hydraulic system is housed to any future hose failure. Do you know anything about when it is safe to remove a house and know that there is not any pressure behind it? On the latest hose failure to the middle jacks, we noticed the slide-outs wouldn't move and saw leaking fluid. I was hooked up to the truck and was able to crimp the hose with a pair of vise grips and then the slide-outs were able to be closed. That was a lifesaver. I'd love to communicate back and forth about experiences since we have the same year Vanleigh.

How has this solution been doing? Are you experiencing any more popping or sagging? I have a 2020 RV with this system and have added the fork oil and still have popping. If our RV sits level for a few weeks it actually drops about an inch or more during that time.

Yes ATF is from the factory, as it thins you take some out and add some in. We were having issues with popping and sagging and even after replacing with ATF it wasn't enough. Either way, this is a HOW to video... even if you replace with ATF it's the exact same concept. Happy Trails!

This is dangerously stupid miss information. A different slide out manufacturer specify different oil for their unit. Some take automatic transmission fluid, Some take straight hydraulic fluid and son take a proprietary fluid. But to state that automatic transmission fluid is too thin is ridiculous if the unit was designed to operate on that fluid. Not only does automatic transmission fluid not break down but it breaks down much less than hydraulic fluid. Automatic transmission fluid is designed to work and heat and pressure's way way beyond that of a hydraulic pump. This gentleman is grossly miss in formed and guiding people down the wrong path. Call your manufacture and find out what oil they specify don't just grab any fluid that some novice tells you to use. Bad boy bad video LOL

This is what the Lippert manufacture advised us to use on the level up system which is stated in the video. As the majority of rv manufactures use Lippert hydraulic systems for their jacks and slides it is safe to assume that this will work for the majority of people. This was also recommended by our manufacturer as this is what they use of the hydraulics are causing issues. Feel free to make your own video on how to “properly” perform this task, if this one is not up to your standards. Thanks for watching!
