Put new batteries on my trailer today, installed a renogy battery monitor over winter. Plugged in shore power and I'm seeing 13.6 volts but less than an amp going to charge the battery. Looks like I'll be pulling the converter in the morning and doing some testing, huge thank you for the video.
@RotoCityTech
@RotoCityTech 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. 13.6 is pretty normal and if it’s only taking an amp my guess is the battery is full and the converter has gone into absorption mode

Nice..it’s a good fix I will remember, you are correct I cannot find a good rv repair shop that will fix items at this level. Always $150.00 hour and all new parts. If they knew the product they could diagnose this issue in 10 min, total repair it 20 min hence no one will do it that way. Old school is better long term. Do it yourself & you will never go wrong, We may do it twice but you will get it done.

I have the panel out and was just going to see if I could buy a new converter, but now, if I can fix it, even better. Thanks for the info; you've helped a lot of people. At 4:30 that would be the continuity setting of your meter, the real basic ones will tie it in to an ohm reading setting like the walmart meters. Some of the fancier meters have a strict continuity setting. Good way to still test those. Especially the blade fuses for automotive.

Thanks Hank! In my case I could see both of the 200V 680uF caps were bad, the cases had heat damage/bubbling, and the metal ends were swollen out a bit. I ordered replacements from China on EBay as what I found in the USA would take longer to get and cost more. Plus I replaced the fuse with an Axial Ceramic Time Delay Fuse, 6x30mm, 15A, 250V from Amazon. Nearby the caps was a brown area which also looked liked heat damage at R49, a 1470ohm resistor. I lifted/desoldered one end and it measured fine, so resoldered it back down. Happy to say it worked like a charm, RV lights are now working, and I expect the batteries will be getting charged. FYI this came about because I connected the plug to 240V, thinking that the RV 120V 30A outlet was just like my shop 240V 30A outlets. Oops! that was a stupid mistake, but all fixed now.

Thanks!! It looks like the same unit in my 2018 Surveyor. My issue is I have no power coming into the unit while I'm plugged in and the only thing that works is 12 volt equipment (lights etc.) But I'm gonna dive into it more tomorrow and your vid gave me courage and I won't feel like I'm jumping into it completely blind👍🏼 Thanks!!

Happy to hear you’re going to take a look! That’s a strange problem to have tho with no shore power coming in and only 12v. I’d also start tracing those wires connected to the 30amp plug. Good luck and keep me updated!

@RotoCityTech when I opened it up there is a bar with wires going into it with about 7-8 Set screws. One of those set screws came loose and the wire bounced around and the wire jacket was crispy. I snipped off about a half inch and tightened the set screw correctly and VOILA👍🏼👍🏼 All good!! Just got back home from the Black Hills of South Dakota so I'm assuming it happened on the return trip... good timing, it could of been on the way there.. Thank you so much for relieving the stress of jumping into it👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Big help!!

Good vid man. Unfortunately I had to find out the hard way like you did with the exception that both of my capacitors are blown but the F1 was fine. Inverter fan kicks on for about 5 seconds before cutting back off, if you pull the top “reverse battery” fuse. I’m assuming it’s because the capacitors can’t obtain and distribute the required voltage and it’s just taking the whole unit a few seconds to figure that out. 🤷🏼‍♂️ either way I’m 17 days into a healthy and junk food free lifestyle and I have my heart set on a Reese’s and a Vanilla Coke so I’m done for now. Thanks again for the video! Peace and love from bama

You lucked out. I blew up three of these puppies because of bad power. Unable to work on the boards as they were toast. So had to buy the converters online. The one I have is around $170 and I had to install. Yours is in a great location. I had to completely pull the panel out as far as it would go and hang it with a rope to a handle above. The converter is behind the panel on my Fleetwood motorhome. That sucked doing this each time. Thanks for the tip. Wish mine would have been that easy.

Nice. My issue is similar, but a bit different. On shore power only(I don't use a battery at all), my AC is getting through to DC, but if it gets cold then the DC output is somehow restricted or flickery/faint.. So when it acts up my lights(fridge, anything DC) will either blink on and off at a tic toc pace, or they'll dim very low and a loud steady beeeeeep will sound(I've heard it's a low voltage signal). But, if while this is happening, I use say the microwave, or toaster, or anything AC current thats pulling a lot of power, the DC will work fine, but only while that AC appliance is used. It's like something in the DC output side, some component on the converter board, is shorting out or shrinking when it gets cold, not allowing the current to flow properly. And using an AC appliance somehow shoves the current through so it operates as it should.. lol idk. Only acts up when it's cold, it it's warm outside there's never a problem. Probably just gonna buy a new one but I just think it's prob something simple and cheap, so trying to see if anyone has dealt w this specifically
@RotoCityTech
@RotoCityTech Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Hmmm yea this is strange. I’ve never heard of this before. It does seem like something is throttling there power for some reason until an appliance forces juice to run thru. I’m sure there’s is a way to test all this but I don’t even know what meter you’d use to try and do that. These converters are not too expensive so I’d say yea just get a new one to replace and then start messing with the old to see if you can find anything out. Best case is you have an extra converter in case the other one messes up
@Drew79

Thanks for watching. Hmmmm sounds like there is a short somewhere cause that to happen. I’d start by trying to look at all my hot connections and make sure they are good and then the ground as well. It can be difficult to find these gremlins tho. The battery leaking is a big problem

Me again. When you took the board off to replace and solder the capacitor and fuse, did you have to disconnect the wires or just leave it hooked up and wrangle it into a good position to work on it. I've watched other videos in which they actually replaced the converter and there were lots of connections with wires that looked a bit too much for me. But if I test and find the problem and can just flip it over with the wires still connected, I think I can do this myself. Thanks for your help!!!

Yea I regret not getting that part filmed. I just disconnected the cables at the battery and then got it in position to solder it right there on the floor since it was just the one fuse. Good luck!
