You may be glossing over an important detail regarding the inches vs percentage measurements. The surface of the liquid propane is a squared off cylinder. The bottom is not! So it will always be taller in inches than it would be as a percentage. You're expecting it to be a linear relationship, but it isn't.
@mdslazas
@mdslazas 5 ай бұрын
This is correct, dividing by the height would be accurate for percentage if it was a perfect cylinder with square top and bottom, but the tank is not that, weight should be more accurate.

I have no problem with the old version. So far it's been a year on my battery. Very accurate. I think you beat up the old version for no real reason. Sounds like promotion to spend more money on the pro. They have rubber bottom insert you can get instead of the clips on Amazon and they keep any depri to buildup under the tank. I have checked my propane right thru the winter with no problem. So if your on a budget like most people are the original one works flalisly. I love it. You probably should change the battery once a year like a smoke alarm anyway. So every season you have a fresh battery.I change mine anyway no matter what the app says. What's the cost of a battery anyway for piece of mine. Isn't the reason you bought the monitor anyway?
@EddieAtLarge

I do agree and as I said in the video, the old sensor worked great for us other than the battery that depleted after only about 4 to 6 months. We are full time in our rig, so, not sure if that plays a part. The differences in accuracy are minimal and if you’re on a budget, they do still sell the original on Amazon. Thanks for your input and safe travels! ✌🏻

I've had the originals in my toy hauler for almost two years. Accuracy has never been an issue. The batteries that came with it lasted over a year. Always replace them with a good brand of battery and make sure the batteries are fresh. If you get cheap generic batteries or old batteries, they will not last as long. I used to buy batteries in big batches to get a cheaper price, but by the time you use them up, the last ones I used didn't last as long as the ones right after I bought them. Changing the batteries on the originals was a piece of cake. I'll upgrade if/when these stop working. As far as the app goes, why the need to constantly monitor it by the app??? I usually just hit the button on the monitor every day or two. If the app is constantly communicating with the sensors, of course the battery life will be less! The app is great, but hitting the button on the monitor unit as I walk by, takes less time than opening up the app...

I have the original Mopeka sensors and they have worked pretty good for the most part. I have had to replace the batteries every 5-6 months and I recently had a different issue. We're snowbirds and staying at a resort in a town where they charge for propane by the fill rather than how much is being put in a tank. So if my 30 pound tank has 5 gallons of propane in it and I want to top it off, it costs the same as if my tank is completely empty. So I was watching my propane use daily and saw where it got down to 2% left according to the app. The propane actually lasted another 24 hours before it was really empty and our Absorption refrigerator warned us that the propane wasn't available. I switched tanks and turned off the empty tank. Each of the past several days, the app has gone crazy with reading the empty tank. Each time I check, instead of saying the tank was empty, it has said it's 54% full, it's 10% full, it's empty, it's 7% full, it's 25% full etc. It is always showing something different. The battery level is full and I just changed them a few weeks ago. What do you think the issue is with that?
@EddieAtLarge
@EddieAtLarge 8 ай бұрын
Hmmm. The only time I’ve had that issue is when the battery was bad. Even though you just changed the battery recently, the new battery may be no good. I would suggest trying a different battery. Also check to make sure there is no dirt or debris between the sensor pad and tank. What kind of grease are you using? I’ve found that the Mopeka Sonic grease is a little different than regular dielectric grease. Dielectric is a little thicker and may not transmit as well. I will add, the new sensors have been great in that respect. Never had this issue like we did with the old sensor and the batteries last forever. Almost 2 years later on my water tank sensor and it’s still reading full battery life. Pretty awesome.
@robh063
@robh063 8 ай бұрын
@@EddieAtLarge I have been using Dielectric grease because the little tube I got when I bought the sensors a few years ago was used up long ago. I tested the batteries using my multimeter so I know they are both good.

@EddieAtLarge 7 ай бұрын
Hi Robert, you can use either the Mopeka Propane or the Mopeka Universal. Here is a link for the sensors on Amazon: amzn.to/48jDLvO With your 16 gallon horizontal tank, you’ll need to use the “Arbitrary” setting under “Tank Size” in the app settings menu. Then measure the height of your tank in inches and input that in the settings then you’re good to go. 👍🏻

Nice review. As I have the originals that are working fine, I’ll just deal with the battery changes. If I were to buy again, though, better battery life would make the pro worth it imho. Other than that, their spacers weren’t very durable. Cut some aluminum that attach via a screw using existing holes on the tank base, and that works a lot better.
@EddieAtLarge
@EddieAtLarge 9 ай бұрын
Thanks Jeff. I agree with you on the spacers. I have broken several of them myself. Mopeka actually makes something called a tank halo. It’s basically a rubber ring that attaches to the bottom of the tank that raises the tank and gives it a nice cushion as well. I put them on my tanks and they work very well. Here’s an Amazon link if you want to check them out. amzn.to/3R4oV6x

@@EddieAtLarge Thanks. Yeah I saw those, but when the aluminum ones fell off and got lost I wanted to use the trailer that day and not smash the sensors, plus I had some leftover aluminum and a plasma cutter right there…. And $20 is $20. Rubber might be nice, though. Propane tank bases always seem to get scratched up and rusty and have to be periodically cleaned up and painted.

Great review! Has the accuracy of these sensors gotten any better for you? Ideally (for the situation I’d like to use these in), we’d like to be able to measure usage per day. Unfortunately, that data won’t be very reliable if it varies by up to 5%.

@@EddieAtLargeThanks for the response! I help out at a non-profit that runs summer camps for kids. We’d like to track the usage over the span of (ideally) a day, but per week is really the goal. Basically we just want to automatically calculate the utility cost of each individual week of camp. Also it would be great to just be able to check in on the level of the tanks remotely (with the WiFi bridge) instead of having to check the gauges so often.
@EddieAtLarge
@EddieAtLarge 6 ай бұрын
I would think the sensors would be accurate enough for a weekly accounting of propane usage. We really do love the ability to check the levels via our phones and it’s also really nice to get alerts when the tank is low. You can set a custom threshold for the low tank level alert.

I wonder if you let both tanks run open, you could get away with using just one sensor as long as both tanks are equal when installing.
@EddieAtLarge
@EddieAtLarge 8 ай бұрын
The way my system is set up, when I place the lever in the middle, it always pulls from the driver side first and then automatically switches over to the passenger side when the driver’s side tank is almost empty. So, you should be able to get away with one sensor placed on the side that empties first if your setup works the same.

@@EddieAtLarge Mine is a simple “Y” connection. Two in/one out without a switch or lever between the two. If I open both of my tank valves, I’m pretty sure usage is balanced between both. I typically run both open anyway so my situation could possibly work with just one sensor. I recently weighed both tanks and they’re exactly 25lbs.

If you want to have the ability to have communication with the sensor while away from the RV, you will need several things. First, you must have a WiFi router at your RV that is connected to the internet. Second, you’ll need to purchase a WiFi bridge from Mopeka. Here is a link for that on Amazon: amzn.to/3RIbPLb With those things in place, you’ll be able to communicate with your sensors from anywhere.

Hi Eddie, could you help me out and advise whether either or both the old and the new sensors and the app are kg compatible, ie for use in Australia and can the user input the size or is it preset sizes of tanks,i see that there are presets of 20lbs and up,so im wondering can i input a smaller size in lbs if need be through the app. The most common rv lpg sizes here are 3.7kg(4.0kg)and 8.5kg(9.0kg). I have mopeka made bmpro sensors however the app is buggy since an update and its failed to be fixed for months so looking to go to the source. Thanks for any help.
@EddieAtLarge
@EddieAtLarge 10 ай бұрын
Hello Andrew, will be happy to help! The current Mopeka Tank Check app does allow you to choose Australia in the “Tank Region Selection” under the settings gear icon. After choosing Australia, you will then under “Tank Size” have the choices of “4.5kg, 6kg, 9kg, 11kg, 14kg, 18kg (for vertical tanks only)and Arbitrary”. If none of the other available tank sizes listed fit your need or if your tank is horizontal, you should choose Arbitrary. This will then give you the option to enter a specific height and indicate if your tank is either vertical or horizontal as well as allow you to input the tank height in Inches. The info button indicates “For horizontal tanks, the percentage displayed will be the measured fluid height relative to the height you enter in the Arbitrary field”. I believe this should work the same for both old and new sensor, however, I only have the new sensors now as I gave away my old sensors. The Mopeka website states that the Pro Check sensors work for tanks up to 250lbs and it does not state a minimum size. Hope this info helps!
