Hi Steve! Nice video, always good to do repairs yourself as much as you can. The younger generation would be better off if they know that already... it helps to appreciate what you have.

When breaking a nut loose with a breaker bar, I like to push down using the weight of my body. Pulling up seems like a lot of work.

Gotta love rust free Southwest vehicles. Steve, we camped at the Lake Mead Boulder beach campground a few weeks ago. All new, level, concrete pads. They kept the trees, so most sites still have shade. No electrical hookups but with our new solar setup, we don’t need it (at least during cooler weather). I want to go back if we hit a few days that temps are below 80

Good to see you again Steve. You are fortunate that the wheel studs didn’t break from being overnighted. The other problem with over tightening is that the wheels can have damage where the nuts finally rest against when tight. Not to mention unequal torque and warp the rotors. A good mechanic always uses a torque wrench for final tightening. How would you ever change a flat along the road? Always enjoy your posts and looking forward to seeing your next one.

Steve, It's a shocking vid!! Every man should know how to maintain their own veh. I think a substantial saving if you know how. New retired subscriber from Vegas 2 vlog ago. I've watched some of your older videos and it seems that you and I have a lot in common. I retired COHenderson 5 years ago. Do my own veh maintainace, I weld, do woodwork, own a Consew industrial sewing machine for personal upholstery, own a 4th gen 4runner, used to ride chrome moly racing bicycle (used it for LV corporate challenge), love outdoor exploring with the 4Runner or my VW offroad buggy or just taking my small toy hauler anywhere just to get out the Dodge city. I'm looking at e-bike right now but I haven't decide which one to buy. It seems like the 26" fat tires, the tires are too tall. Keep up the good work. Maybe I ran into you one day.

Great to see you bz on the RV. After any tire service it’s best to check the torque on the lugs before finding out stuck on the road. Make sure those jack stands are not part of the HF recall. I returned all mine and got store credit whether the jack stands were on the recall or not.

Steve, We also had the lithium battery jump starter packs we got on Amazon, but you have to keep them charged. After it sits for a while and that day comes you need a jump, it doesn't have the necessary charge to jump your battery. So we switched to the Autowit SuperCap 2 12-Volt Battery-Less Portable Jump Starter, also on Amazon. Since it is a super-capacitor type, we never have to worry about keeping it fully charged. It utilizes the "dead battery" remnants charge to "boost" your dead battery with its own remaining power. So far, we have used it to help others in need, so we can say it indeed does work well. Always use your body weight to push down on the wrench! Then put a small amount of grease or anti seize on the studs when you put the wheels back on. Always use a torque wrench if you have one! I always like to go back and check the tightness of the lug nuts after someone else has worked on the truck .

If that impact won't take off lug nuts. Look at the outlet valve on the Air compressor. These HF compressors are known for having a very small orifice in the outlet ball valve. I replaced my ball valve with one with an orifice over twice the size of the Original valve. Then my impact wrench could get the volume of air needed.

Hi Steve, your alter ego here. I don't know if you've seen the newer generation capacitor super jump starter. There's no battery but it will take any charge weak or strong and convert it to a much stronger jump. The advantage that I see is that they don't have to been charged up all the time and you only use it when you need it. The downside is that you can't charge a device but you already have house batteries and solar for that. Scotty was recommending them. They seem to be very strong and reliable and about the same size as a battery.

Miss your videos

65 - 80 ft.lbs. of torque is what most vehicle lugs should be tightened to but a few applications can be as tight as 120. I would recommend the use of a torque wrench when tightening the wheel lug nuts. The dealer can tell you the proper torque spec. An acetylene torch can make quick work of old hardware but, be careful not to cut into any control arms or springs or rubber components when using one. Alternatively, a rotating or reciprocating, pneumatic cut off tool can also make the job easier. If the new parts don't come with hardware, I recommend trying to get at least one bolt/nut out and go to the hardware store for grade 8 replacements. Old hardware can break. I recommend the use of anti-seize on nuts and bolts when re-installing, as it will help preserve hardware from oxidizing together making future service much easier. I even use it on my lugnuts (some would say not to do that but, I've never had a "wheel-off" [that's when your wheel comes off while driving] using anti-sieze on lugs). Hope this helps.

You were lucky not to break a single stud off with the amount of torque the shop put on those. Improperly torqued lugnuts is a pet peeve of mine. The shops just ring them on as tight as possible, never considering the owner may one day have to change that tire on the side of the road. I have had to help out a couple family members in this situation who only had the tire iron that came with the car. When they called me I had to load up my truck with a proper jack, breaker bar with cheater, and a cordless impact wrench, in freezing cold temperatures. Lug nuts should only get a final tightening from a hand operated torque wrench in my opinion. Yours were on so tight they may have warped the rotors as well. Great video.

I know when I swapped out my shocks on my 01 3/4 ton Dakota, the shocks were wimpy also.

The HF impact wrench is rated at 700 ft lbs. Tire shops use something in the range of 1400 ft lbs.

Hey Steve, I have a 1998 230 XLW too, bought it with 52,000 miles and have run her up to 79K in the past three years or so. I too had porpoising issues from the get-go and at about 65,000 miles also replaced my shocks, but with Monroe HD gas charged units. This did improve the ride a bit, but the front end was still bottoming out too often, so I started looking for some stiffer front springs. Several companies sell a spring sold (but not manufactured) by MOOG that promises a 1000 pound, or 25-30% load increase capability. These were specifically designed for commercial vehicles, but are also recommended for RV's. I was hesitant about this increase in stiffness; maybe good for a bigger class C, but felt that they might be too much for me, and after more research ran across a company called Coil Springs Specialties. This outfit was extremely impressive from the first phone call on, and I couldn't be happier with the result. They ended up engineering a custom set of springs, reportedly analyzing 10 variables as compared to the stock springs, that provided a 15% increased rate and keeping the stock spring height. Turned out that my original springs had settled 1-1/2", which certainly contributed to the bottoming out problem I had. My front end as a result is riding higher the same amount, increasing road clearance, but will probably settle a bit over time. Maybe your Bilsteins will give you what you are looking for, but if not, I strongly suggest that you talk to Mr. Kevin Crane with Coil Spring Specialties. These did cost a bit more than the MOOG offering, but completely worth it; perhaps since they have already done the engineering work for this RV they might sell a set a bit cheaper to ya too!

A mechanic really tightened my son car the oil pan nut and it was very hard to get it loose that it destroy the nut.

Steve... Have you contemplated on insulating the truck with peel & seal and fat mat? I did this to my 05 Scion xB don't with ceramic tint and it greatly decreased the inside temp on hot socal days... I know own a 96 4x4 4runner... Definitely watching it build videos

An RV can be a money pit? Oh, yes. My older brother (now deceased) and his best friend dabbled in classic cars, drove rally cars, owned big boats, etc. All of those things were devices that made money disappear.

Hey Steve. Hope you are well. I also have a 1998 Xplorer XLWT. Configuration 95% of yours. Difference being my fresh water tank is under bed on passenger side. Water heater is under that awkward 3rd seat. Same white exterior and white interior. Been my COVID project since Oct 2020 restoring this rare Class B to its former glory. Your videos have been incredibly helpful. Thanks so much since you have already thought thru much of what I needed to do. You saved me a great deal of time and $$. 2 questions. 1) In your floor Reno vid you mention replacing 3rd seat. Did you ever do that Steve? My situation a bit more complicated since water heater under that seat. But would like to know what you did. 2) you don’t mention whether you feel the Billsteins made a big difference in handling.

You can hard wire power hand tool 18v battery for emergency jump start, it worked on regular passenger car, not sure a big van tho

Sears juuuuust before they closed their shop did my van's shocks for 40 bucks a wheel. No way would I do it when they did it that cheap. Oh yeah they were Bilsteins. Freaking amazing shocks. Struts front shocks rear.

How come you only gave short bursts of impacting on the lug nut. Most of the time keeping the impact on the lug nuts for 15 to 20 seconds will break it loose.
