UPDATE - New Gear FAILED Again, so I had to replace the motor. See video -- • RV Slide Out Repair - ...
UPDATE - Original Plastic Gear can be found here - tusonrvbrakes.com/products/ny...
UPDATE - Motor and Clutch Gear are now also at tusonrvbrakes.com/
This video details how I diagnosed and repaired an inoperative main slideout room on our 2011 Keystone Cougar. The slide mechanism had worked perfectly since new, but we arrived at a new campsite the other day, and it would not go out! All I could hear was a whirring noise when I pushed the open button.
So, I crawled under the trailer where I knew that Keystone had left an access panel below the electric slide motor. I was able to use an electric drill to manually open the slide. Next, I removed the motor and took it apart to troubleshoot the issue.
Turns out that a nylon gear had a section of gear teeth worn off. The motor would just spin freely. Luckily, I located an all-metal replacement gear on Amazon. With a slight modification using a file, it worked fine. Two days later the slide was once again functional. I was a happy camper since the cost of a new motor was hundreds of dollars, and the gear was only $25.

My old 2003 Americamp 5th wheel uses a different (better?) design in case the slide motor fails. It has an emergency hand crank that can be inserted into the gearbox from outside the RV to manually run the slide in or out. No need for a drill or to crawl around under the rig. Fortunately, I have never needed to use it. But I'm glad it's there, just in case.

Great video Ray thx FWIW slides seem to be the weakest link in RVs. One of our previous KZ 5vers had a motor with gear drive to one of the slide support arms. I replaced so many of the gears that always stripped out at most inoportune times. I finally bought a motorized linear actuator like your LCI unit and had it installed to replace the gear drive system and never looked back. We now have hydraulic rams on our KS Fuzion that have proven to be reliable other than I just added BAL rollers to assist the actuator on the kitchen slide as it was dragging hard on the wear bar with combined weight of the fridge, stove, fireplace and entertainment cabinet and components. YMMV Happy Camping 2 You both.

Nice fix ! I just went thru the same thing on my awning. No parts for at least 6 -7 months. The old 'supply chain' thing'. Unfortunately I had to replace the motor & all. ~$600 for the motor. I was in shock. FYI ... RV shop wanted $350 -$400 labor. I asked them about just replacing the whole awning thinking it couldn't be much more than just the motor. WRONG ! They said it would take 6-7 months for a new one and ~$2400 - $2600. The last one took them 6 months. They said the price of these type of items have skyrocketed in the last year, & were having a lot of difficulty getting them. This was all in a major city at a major RV supply house.

Amazon has pickup location hubs in many stores like drug stores, CS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid etc. www.amazon.com/ulp You get a email with a number code and/or bar code to use and they scan and give you the package. Or there are Amazon lockers that are metal storage lockers put outside usually corner stores or gas stations. They are outside. Just drive up enter the pick up code and a door opens. Most items can ship to either of these ways unless they are large or heavy. For those I use home addresses of some friends I have down there in the USA. Cheers, Ray

Ray- thank you for all of your quick replies! Another question: Can the gears be removed from the box without removing the entire motor assembly from the actuator? I was unable to just pull them out with the cover plate removed. In my 2018 Venture model the gears in the box are in a different order than your model: the Clutch gear is on top (closest to the cover) and the plastic gear sits under it. When I pull on the clutch gear it would come out about 3/8" but then stop...is there something holding it in...I didn't want to try to force it. Thanks!

On my RV, the Tuson brand motor assembly is only held in by one bolt and when the cover is off the gears come out easily - see this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLFdnKR91bHSoWg.html
@tipabr
@tipabr Жыл бұрын
@@LoveYourRV The "Venture" Mfg system has two bolts holding the gear box to the actuator ram assembly. One bolt is on the bottom and easily seen, the other is on the top, up against the bottom of the camper... unable to be seen and a bit difficult to remove and replace. It helped to have a ratcheting box end wrench to put on it. I bought a new gear assembly ($133.00) and installed them but the problem still exists. I cleaned and lubed the rack system with slide lube, but I can't get the slide to go out unless I manually crank it out a few inches first, then the motor will take it the rest of the way. The slide comes in fine though. I'm plugged in to 120v and the battery is fully charged...Not sure what the issue is???
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV Жыл бұрын
@@tipabr I'd first check all the wiring connections, especially any grounds to frame in case one is corroded. Low voltage could be a problem, the slide may need max amperage to get it going. One test would be to take a battery and hook it up right at the motor to see if it's a voltage issue. Another thought is maybe the slide has become slightly misaligned somehow and is binding when closed. That would be my initial guesses.

Ray- I have a 2018 with an LCi PN 168956 gear box / motor assembly, rack & pinion system. When trying to extend the slide it just clicks (a different clicking sound from when the slide is fully extended or retracted). I pulled off the gear box cover and all the teeth look good on both the metal and the plastic/nylon sprockets. Do you know if the metal sprocket you referred to as some type of "CLUTCH" could be the problem? I can manually crank out the slide and everything else looks good. @@LoveYourRV Hi Ray- THANKS for the quick reply!!! That's awesome of you. I was just watching one of your other videos where your showed Lippert's Replacement Gear Set and also their Actuator High Speed Motor. You are correct, Mine is an assembly by Venture MFG Co. Ray to the rescue again! Do you think the "clicking" that you refer to comes from the clutch feature on the one gear? My slide makes the same clicking sound at the end of it's stroke, and I have always wondered it that was a safety feature on the sound of a problem.
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 2 жыл бұрын
That would be my guess as my slide has always made that sound at the end of travel. There may also be clutch plates on the little toothed rollers under the slide. Maybe its those as the sound to me seems to come from the outside.
@thehigsy
@thehigsy 2 жыл бұрын
So are the slides supposed to make these clicking noises at full travel or is it a future slide issue ?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 2 жыл бұрын
@@thehigsy Yes, I'm pretty sure that is the case. Ours has done it since new back in 2011. I believe what you are hearing is clutches that are designed to keep the motor torque from ruining anything when the mechanism reaches the end of travel. Much like you know electric drills have a setting for screws where you can adjust the max torque. They make a similar noise.
@garylewis327
@garylewis327 Жыл бұрын
Great job, even if it failed again. You can't put a price on the knowledge you gain from doing something like this yourself. And you no doubt saved a bundle of money vs. taking it to a shop. Question - did you have any issues separating the cover from the gear box? I've got a old '94 Alpenlite with a super slide that has failed. Symptom was the motor would only operate one side of the slide, while the manual crank would only operate the other side. I figured it was a broken gear inside the gear box, so pulled the motor and gear box off. I removed the 8 screws that hold the cover to the gear box and separated the two, but the cover will only come out about 3/4 of an inch and then something inside makes it hang up. I can see inside enough to tell that there are beveled gears on the output shaft, and as far as I can tell they look ok. But I want to get that cover completely off so I can thoroughly inspect it and re-grease it. When taking it apart I noticed that several of the 8 screws that hold that cover on were very loose. I suspect they were loose enough to allow those beveled gears to separate enough that they didn't mesh properly. So this could be a very easy fix, but I really need to get that box opened up so I can make sure everything inside looks alright. Any ideas?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV Жыл бұрын
Mine came apart easily. here you'll find two more update videos I did. www.loveyourrv.com/rv-slide-out-stopped-working-but-easy-repair-replaced-stripped-gear/ Maybe your motor model is different. Cheers, Ray
@garylewis327
@garylewis327 Жыл бұрын
@@LoveYourRV So it turns out that with my gear pack the output shaft that connects to the bar that goes to the other side of the slide has a pin stuck through it laterally on one end, and the other end (inside the gear pack) has a gear attached to it, so the only way to get the cover off is to punch out the lateral pin so the cover can be removed from the shaft. After doing that it came right apart. Turns out the only thing wrong with this was the cover bolts had loosened up which allowed the beveled gears inside to disengage. I regreased everything, screwed it back together and it's working great now.

Is it possible that the old gear was nylon to protect the motor. Ie, Burn the gear not the motor? Otherwise great to see your resourcefulness.
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 2 жыл бұрын
I imagine it's nylon so designed to fail in case the clutch gear was to bind and not do its job and someone kept holding the button like a kid or if the power switch got stuck on. Someone emailed me today with Replacement Part Nylon Double Gear (Part# 23A-085-25-232) link to the original from Tuson tusonrvbrakes.com/products/nylon-gear-for-18-1-gear-ratio-lp-actuator-or-right-angled-gear-motor

Dumb question... I assume this is the motor for a "rack and pinion" slide out. Is this something that should be pulled and maintenanced periodically? Re-lubed like wheel bearings?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 10 ай бұрын
From what I gather its a none maintenance item. The problem actually ended up being a faulty clutch gear that in turn ruins the other gear. See my update videos on the repair www.loveyourrv.com/rv-slide-out-stopped-working-but-easy-repair-replaced-stripped-gear/ Cheers, Ray

I have never touched a slide-out mechanism in my entire life. What I was wondering was, perhaps the using of a nylon gear actually serves an engineering purpose? Kind of gear reduction, the torque is tremendous. Perhaps the nylon gear acts as some sort of a shear pin? Without some sort of failsafe torque limiter, I can see where it's possible to even do damage. Just a thought.

It likely is something that if the clutch fails, maybe a backup so people don't push apart the slide room. Can't really see a reason otherwise unless you are trying to make them not last too long.

I bet they have to think of every possible use case that people could figure out how to break things. :) Like some toddler deciding to play with the slide all day, holding the button in constantly, or if the switch got stuck, stuff like that.

RAY! I would love to just find the motor under my unit I have Montana 3720 RL and all I hear is a clicking sound Checked fuses batteries nothing works I can’t find the problem If I could find where they put the motor I bring it and pull it to a shop Where’s the motor?

It pretty well straight across from the round pipe they call the ram, that is if yours is electric vs hydraulic. This video will give you an idea of where the motor is. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g5l-ad2VyLqun30.html

The issue with these motors is if you hold down the open/close button or attempt to "snug" the slide once it is in or out, the clicking sound, you will strip out these gears. On my first unit with slides I stripped out the gears in the slides within the first few months. Lesson learned. For those that don't know the clicking sound is gears jumping......eventually stripping out. Once the slide is in or out let go of the button. Why these type of slide motors don't have a stop trigger is beyond me. I suppose one could adapt their slides with such a trigger of they so desire. Cheers!

What you hear clicking is a clutch gear, and is normal. The problem is if that clutch gear fails and sticks, then the gears can strip. Finally figured that all out. See my update videos --. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLFdnKR91bHSoWg.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sKp_fbVh0ajbhX0.html Cheers, Ray

Don’t think you should be operating the slide with Anne sitting in it. I have also read that you should not use your slides in the closed position. I don’t know if keystone is one of those. Myself I don’t see this as an issue
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like covering their butts. ;) I have a day bed on the other end of the slide that weighs more than Anne. Plus I routinely travel with about the same amount of weigh as her in the exact same spot, two office chairs and some other odds and ends. So I don't see weight as an issue in the slide as I have operated it fully loaded for over a decade. Just have to be careful when walking near the slide lip, as this type of slide tilts up slightly when fully drawn in. So the front lip is an inch or so above the main RV floor. I think they are mostly worried about breaking the edge of the floor board by stepping on it. Though on mine it is 3/4 plywood so you'd have to be a big person to break it. But I guess some people are rather large. :)

Using plastic gears to move 1000 pounds is crazy. The manufacturers save a dollar.
@LoveYourRV

I think they use it as a sacrificial piece. Turns out my clutch gear was the real failure, the clutch action seized going one way and that's why the plastic gear failed. The metal gear last a while but ended up grinding and failing too. Could not locate a replacement clutch gear so ended up swapping the whole motor kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLFdnKR91bHSoWg.html

Well done Ray, a great video as always. It is good to know that those parts can be sourced especially in these challenging times. We are back in Oasis Palms RV resort Thermal CA, you turned us on to this place years ago. DON"T come back here it has gone down hill big time, not a resort anymore just a mobile home park full of low income RVs that are falling to pieces. Management KNOW how bad it is here and talk openly about it. Here are 4 excerpts (there are 7 issues) from the latest "Oasis Palms RV Resort Bulletin dated Jan. 5 2022. And don't forget these are the words of the Manager, NOT mine: 2) Spit, snot and toothpaste spat all over urinals, sinks and mirrors. Dirty underwear, used razors, used syringes, and Roaches (weed) buts left in showers." We will NOT be staying here beyond this month. Sad really because this place has so much potential but right now it's filthy and snowbird women do not feel safe here.
