Deciding what kind of water heater to get for your RV? We talk about the Pros and the Cons of a tankless water heater after using it for a year.
Here is a link to the unit we have
Girard 2GWHAM. amzn.to/3hamYjU
Matching Door goo.gl/Baodrs
Suburban IW60. amzn.to/2OF9MaC
No matter what water heater you have if it is a Suburban water heater or an Atwood water heater it is always good to look at your options and see what will fit your needs. We went with the Girard Tankless water heater (GIRARD GSWH-2 TANKLESS WH) and have been happy with it but it doesn't come without its pros and cons. We hope this video helps you out and you enjoyed it, if you did please Subscribe to see more in the future.

I have a tip for you with regards to conservation of shower water. Before the hot water arrives in the shower and the water is flowing. Collect the cool water in a large plastic pitcher and use it to rinse your dishes then some other use after that like wash the floor. or windows etc.

Very good information on tankless water heaters and very accurate. As a 40 year plumbing veteran in residential houses I have found that half the people don't like them and the other half love them. For reasons you stated. The other con on tankless is they need to be flushed a few times a year with a vinegar and water solution to remove excess calcium like a coffee maker, and in some areas in winter really cold ground water produces lukewarm water.

We just completed our first long weekend in the Finger Lakes Region in Upstate NY with our new tankless water heater, which I installed in September of this year along with some other upgrades. Luckily, we snagged a full hookup campsite in one of the remaining RV parks still open. Despite the temperature dropping below freezing all three nights, we loved the new heater (we bought the same model) and it is a new way of thinking in terms of not mixing clod water. But man was it great!! Hot showers (also have the Oxygenics shower head that allows you to keep a trickle of water going while soaping up to keep heater firing) in the morning for the wife and me after breakfast. Plenty of hot water to wash dishes with. Its a real win -win!!

Tanks for the honest review (pun intended). Finally someone talks about the cons. I expected there would be some wasted water for boon-dockers but no one was talking about it. I wish RV manufactures would have them as an option. In time, I’m sure they will.

Thanks for your honest input. We are living in our trailer for a quick move/job change so we’re stuck with our fresh water tank. It’s been fun, but as it’s winter right now we have nights and some days at 25 degrees and winds that blow our pilot light out. Looking for better options for the boondocking adventure!

Thanks guys, my wife and I will be getting a 5th wheel in a couple of years so I'm slowly educating myself on the many issues we'll confront. We just had a tankless water heater put in our home and we were going through the hot cold, hot cold, issue b/c our installer set it at 122 degrees. Now, I turned it down and it works efficently without getting burned. Thank you again, I sure feel like an idiot sometimes. lol.

My friends RV had a unique feature on his unit. It had a switch to turn on the hot water which would turn on a re-circulation system through the hot water heater. You can now have instant hot water at the fixture and you can mix the hot and cold with out losing hot water due to limited flow. This is a very simple system with a pump and switch at every location (kitchen and bath) plus a pump, return line with a one way check valve.

@@Hundert1 I'm no expert, but there's probably a way to get extra wires for the heat controller panel and then mount it near the shower so you can adjust it yourself if you needed to. I don't know that for a fact but I know anything can be done with a little bit of ingenuity.

This is truly a great video. These tankless hot water heaters are very tricky until you get the hang of it. But oh so well worth it as you guys know and agree. When we had our coach built (gas engine) we had the Atwood hot water heater on demand installed. Ours don't have the temperature controls. I'm not sure why but now I'm curious to know. This is our second new coach that we have had built. We had this same brand name installed in the first one as well. They are not cheap, (approx. $5,000 each) but, you're not always concerned about "the hot water" so as you can tell by now I would not want to be without one! We are not full time, and don't even go camping that often yet. But when I do go, I certainly don't want to be limited on hot water. Thanks for sharing! wishing you both miles of smiles...

Thank you sooooo much for your review six months ago i installed one in febuary. ND yes the cold weather model which it was a little annoying it runs its own pilot light and Cycles full heat sometimes although it only got to 20 below it was completely fine. And kept the water hot , even with the colder water coming from the ground I believe that in part 2 cold air being more combustible. Summertime use showed the best efficiency ( single guy) using the shower once a day and occasionally twice Hay Day Plus cooking . I got 11 weeks out of 40 pound propane tank which is excellent savings over the electric I had paid 40 to $50 a month for electricity versus half a 40 pounder is no contest thank you for your review I've come to the similar conclusions to your review several factors. Thanks for the info. I didn't think about adjusting the temp and only using hot water. Sounds like you need a readily accessible thermostat adjustment, so you can change it quickly for individual preference, or if doing dishes, for example. That sounds like a HUGE plus to me. We have decided that a tankless water heater is for us as we will be living full time in our RV shortly. I have watched a number of videos on the installation of the water heaters including one by Duet Justus where he calls you for help on his install. Everything is going fine except for the wiring. I have three wires coming from the RV, (a heavier black wire with a red strip, an red wire with yellow markings, and a red wire with black lettering) and only two wires from the new heater, one red, one black. The instructions are no help at all. Please help, and thanks in advance.

Remember a hot water tank is adding ten gallons to your water storage. I’ve not heard anyone mention this fact. On demand good for a family or if you have a huge water tank, or if you hook up to water in parks. I never hook up to water so am always conserving. As a bachelor and solar tech who has full timed for a few years I love my all solar electric hot water, boon-docking, and conserving water. I also cook mostly with solar electric and only fill my propane about once a year. If using all solar electric as a couple or a family it would be necessary to work efficiently as a team unless you have a giant solar energy system. I’m considering a radiant heat floor but am considering removing the old propane furnace and going with a diesel heater as my engine runs on diesel anyway. Happy travels.

Great video guys!!! I watched your other video on your tankless and was sold on it. However, after this pro vs con I might have to rethink. I love a very hot shower and my husband likes it warm. I didn't know adding to much cold would basically shut down the system. Sorry if I worded that poorly. I love the idea of no recovery time and that's what made me learn toward replacing the tank. Do I sound like I can't make my mind up now? I really appreciate you taking the time to do this video, I could have made a costly mistake. If you think I'm overthinking the hot vs warm shower water please let me know. Again I LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos! Full timing starting Jan 2018!!! Just counting the days.
@AllAboutRVs
@AllAboutRVs 7 жыл бұрын
+Tammie Stephen if you do decide to go with it and you have your water temp set at what you like it to be, your husband could add a small amount of cold water to make it the temp that he would prefer (just small adjustments at a time otherwise too much cold will cause only cold water to come through) or you could turn it down each time and then back up again for you. I hope this helps. But the tankless isn't for everybody and you do have to weigh the pros and the cons before purchasing because as you said it could be a costly mistake that you regret doing. So excited for you guys to be full time here shortly!

Cons: it fills up the gray water tank. I wish I'd never had it put in. It takes a while for the hot water to get to the spigot, then if you turn it off when you're washing dishes it shuts off and you have a little warm water when you turn it back on, but the heater has to fire up again and you have a stream of cold before it heats up again. If you boondock or aren't hooked up full time, I'd advise against it. The gray water tank will be full in no time.

Thanks folks for the review. I'm a bit unclear what happens when the supply hose is baking hot but don't think that situation will arise very often. So, instead of having infinite water mixing capabilities of the tank style heater we only get to add maybe 10 % cold water?? I'm not sure I'm into having a permanent set hot water temperature with no cold water cool down abilities. Even though we can adjust the temperature of this tankless heater I want to do it from the shower and not have to yell out for help. You forgot to mention all the other possible benefits and advantages of the tankless heater. Otherwise the tankless heater seems AWESOME especially since we don't have to deal with an anode rod, heating element or cleaning the tank. HOWEVER, I want a tankless heater that also works with electricity. Hopefully soon the hardworking scientists and engineers will invent one. I guess when winterizing pecan either use our bypass or not, it probably doesn't matter much? Or is it better to fill the tankless pipe with the RV antifreeze?

There have been electric for about as long as there have been gas tankless water heaters but they have been limited to individual water outputs like at the shower or faucet. only in the past year or so have they come out with a larger heat output and they require quarterly maintenance for the anodes. you find them a lot in Asia and Europe.

Get a Truma. They're more expensive than a Girard, but they're better in many ways. One is that the Truma has a small 1 liter tank that keeps some water hot, and will keep the water in your pipes hot, eliminating any lag in hot water arriving, and allowing you to mix cold water with the hot much more efficently to moderate temperature. It will also keep your lines from freezing when it's cold. There is an eco mode that you can use boondocking to save propane, that will eliminate the constant heating, which is how I noramlly run it, and it sips propane. The Truma is a quality product (German engineering) so you pay a premium for it. But if you are full timing and want a water heater that performs, I say that it is the way to go.

When we went to the quartzsite rv show we stopped and looked at the Truma tankless water heater and wanted to switch over to it. It does have a lot of great qualities about it and would love to try it some time!

@@keithmoore7515 I paid $1200 for my Truma install. You can get a 6 gallon Girard for $5-600 (maybe even less) online. Truma won't sell their hardware to you direct. Considering that a competent professional water heater install will take the better part of a morning or afternoon, say about three or four hours, when the going rate for RV labor in most parts of the States these days is at least $120 an hour, the professional installation price of the two is roughly the same. You can buy a Girard, and install it yourself (not all that hard, but it may take you more than 4 hours) but you will be stuck with 6 gallons of hot water capacity at a time. Thing is, your rig probably came with the 6 gallon Girard, or its equivalent. You need to ask yourself if the 6 gallons is adequate to your needs. If you only use your rig infrequently, say a few weeks a year, then the answer is probably yes. If you live in your rig full time, like I do, the answer is almost certainly no. You would not hesitate to spend $1200-1500 on an excellent water heater for your home, one that will last as long as your house does. The Truma will last a decade or more, as long as your rig does, and it pumps out hot water endlessly, as long as you have propane. It is significantly better than the Girard, and considering the cost of labor not that more expensive. If you are living in your rig full time a Truma heater is one of the first improvements you should make.

Sorry, I should clarify I'm not that clear on the limitations of other water heaters by brand, I'm not an expert. My rig came with a 6 gallon heater and it sucked. My Truma is awesome, I love it, and recommend you get one if it seems to make sense to you financially. Know I am simply their customer, they have not paid me to say that.

I've been living in my RV for about 6 years now and I've been debating on switching over to a tankless but my question is how well would they work with a washer. My rig has one and I use it a lot. Also my rig is hooked up to a 320 gallon propane tank would I see a difference in propane use compared to the current 12 gallon hot water heater that is in my rig.

* * * Great video, you two. . . Did you install it yourselves... or did the boys do it for you...? I imagine that it will replace any brand of 6 gallon water heater without much of a problem, yes...? It would vent the same way as the propane exhaust on the installed water heater, yes...? We're looking at a smaller travel trailer, and I'm trying to decide if it'll fit... I love the notion of on-demand hot water. Thanks for making the video... "Born on Valley Isle, Home now, North Carolina; Aloha y'all..." Until that time. . .

Anyone used a newer Suburban propane tankless (Nautilus line, 5286A) water heater at higher altitudes? Does the propane ignite properly? If not, have you found parts, like different sized orifices, available that fix this? Can't seem to find the answer. Most RV tankless are rated to 2k ft elevation. I need one that can go up to 6.5k ft and still work.

Great stuff you might want to consider using a Chinese diesel heater that way you can conserve all of your propane. I have set one up in my motorhome and I’ve taken for Outlets and Vented Within feet of each other to cover my needs. By installing a fuel sending gauge in a 10 L fuel cell I’m able to have heat on demand check out John MCK diesel parking heaters I think you may totally be impressed.

How much increase of propane did you experience with your family of 4? WE only use propane for the fridge & hot water heater when we are on the road for our annual 3 month road trip....so our on board 100 lb cylinger lasts the whole 3 months. WE probably use 40-50 lbs (½ tank) per year as it stands...Roughly what do they cost? It would be replacing a 10 gallon Suburban Gas/electric unit.

You answered your own complaint regarding delayed delivery. I am currently installing a demand electric heater for my kitchen...and a demand electric shower heater, in the shower. The kitchen has 140 deg F capability/the shower only 105, both digital and local controlled. The original 6 gal. propane was replaced with a demand propane camping heater, but only as a backup for the electrics. (The camp version is 1/4 the size...no tank) The whole thing gets a boost via our solar collectors. Preheated water, PV powered circulation pump, (cannot hear it) so we preheat circulated water from tank or supplied water through the propane heater then split the flow to the kitchen and shower, then back to the solar system. Not much load. Point of use is independent. The electric units control temps at point of use. My cost? Not yet spent $500 for all three heaters. My own labor of course. (Requires a few cheap check valves.) Ohhhh, for winters? In tank heater that keep the re-circ water at 50 to 60 F.

I installed a tankless system last year (the, new to me, RV's existing tankless was broken). Installation was easy for the new one. After a year of use I have decided that I despise the tankless system and am switching over to a tank system. The tankless system is a huge water waster (I do quite a bit of boondocking), it was inconsistent in it's hot water delivery (it would get hot then cold, then warm, then cold, then hot without rhyme or reason - I did not mix cold and hot, just ran the hot water). Just FYI - YMMV.

Question for you. My campground is concerned I might be using up too much current and popping breakers at 30A. Mine is a Girard, propane,; am I in danger of using 30A with say AC running at the same time?
@klg1001
@klg1001 2 жыл бұрын
The Girard uses less than 3 amps of current. Your AC will use around 10-15 amps depending on the size so you should still have some room for your converter to run, your fridge to cycle and be able to use some wall outlets.

questions about tankless- you mention that you set temp so you don't have to add cold and risk flow being to small to activate heater, but how does that affect water pressure during shower compared to before you went tankless, does it seem weaker (I can't stand a weak shower spray)? Best shower head to use for this? if you were buying today would you still choose same model? I know Truma is supposed to be bee's knees but I can't justify that premium right now, so looking for recommendations at the price point of what you have....

We only have an issue with water pressure if the park we are staying in has low water pressure to begin with. The shower head that we use is the oxygenics shower head, it might be in our amazon store. We love the shower head and it works great! And yes, we would for sure do the girard tankless again. For us also, we can’t justify spending that amount of money on the truma either. We have heard great things about the truma and I think the best feature of it is not having to decalcify it because they have tabs that you put in. But we have had our girard for over two years now and absolutely love it and would be the first thing we upgrade on any new rv that we get. Hope this helps answer your questions!
