🚌 We had left Coburg, Oregon, headed north on Interstate 5. We had only gotten around 30 miles on a rainy morning when I noticed fluid pouring from the back of the bus. I couldn't tell for sure if it was just rain water or something severe. Thankfully we were at an area that has rest areas on both sides of the highway. I pulled off and evaluated the issue. The fluid was coming from the radiator area of the bus.
We have a 1999 Prevost coach (bus) with a Marathon conversion and we were only about 30 miles north of Marathon Coach's facility. Because I didn't know how much fluid had dumped, I decided to call our roadside assistance company, Coach-Net, to arrange a tow back to Marathon.
Coach-Net was excellent. They worked with us nonstop and continually checked on us to make sure we were doing okay and that we were safe because the tow company couldn't get to us until the next day. The tow company, T & M Towing Service, was excellent as well. They have a piece of equipment that was used to tow our Prevost and it's something to see! Prevost buses sit very low to the ground so if a Prevost can drive up on this trailer then I'd say any RV could drive up on it without dragging its mid-section. TEC Equipment is also a company who helped us in our time of need. We can't say enough about CoachNet, T&M Towing Service, TEC Equipment and Marathon Coach. Camp Marathon was wonderful.
This episode is to show you this interesting piece of towing equipment, visit about the importance of having roadside assistance and what caused our coolant to leak. It's also to teach a life lesson of the importance of human reaction during times like this. Stay calm. Think. Be Safe and have some brownies!
Note: I didn't anticipate using this iPhone footage for our KZfaq channel so I apologize for its quality. Gail

Well, we took your advice and purchased the CoachNet coverage.......and had to use it while parked at a KOA in near Canton, OH for a tire issue. They were the best at customer service and getting us back on the road during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Thanks for the advice. We will pay it forward. BTW - taking the "almost 20-yr old" Marathon H in for renovations in 2024 to Coburg.

I think overall you will have a great experience with Coach-Net. I'm sure we might be somewhere someday where they might not be able to get someone to help us, but so far they have always helped us. I think that you will definitely be happy with the work that Marathon Oregon will provide, while maybe not the cheapest place, you will leave with it looking amazing because it will be done be the converter themselves. I tried looking up Busapalooza and couldn't find anything on it, I've heard about it, so I'll do some checking. As always stay safe and thanks for sharing.

Dr Don, luckily this is the only time we’ve needed to use our roadside service, and they got to the first thing the next morning. We’ve had friends stuck for days like you said, and 1 friend had a tow company sent out by his roadside service, asked for more money on the side of the road, and when our friends said no, the guy drove off and left them. Not sure of the price of an engine, but I suspect your correct, it won’t be cheap. So the price of our service is very inexpensive! Thanks for watching.

I guess it wouldn't be any sweat off your knuckles, if you can afford a "Marathon Coach"!! But for a middle class man...Well it would have been a huge problem, and yes the problem would have been discovered and repaired in the rest area along the roadside without a tow on a lowbed trailer.

I deal location to breakdown in. Plus, you were prepared for the breakdown. Some people may have the notion that you just jump on the road without some type of good tow service. This could be very different if you don’t have this tow service. Plus, if you are camp far out in the middle of no place, another different story. Thanks for the information about your tow service. @TravelingMarlins
@TravelingMarlins Жыл бұрын
Hi Cal, I carry tools as well and a hose wouldn’t have been any problem to change. It was pouring rain and the thought was it was the radiator leaking, so my thought was no since buying 22 gallons of coolant, just to have it leak out again. Since we pay for Coach-Net, it was an easy decision to be towed back to Marathon. If it had needed a radiator or it had to come out for repair, we would have full hookups and the Coach to stay in. Thanks for sharing!

Just signed on to Coachnet this year for the first time. This is ever so great to hear such an awesome review. I am an Oregonian at the more northern end of the state. I think a lot of the reason you were asked/allowed to to drive the coach up onto the trailer is, they figure if you can drive on the highway, you must possess at least some skill. Looked to me like you were an old pro. You followed instruction and the loading went perfect. Thank you for taking the time to record this adventure and give this awesome review.

YEARS AGO, I gotta call from one of our drivers, his simi had broken down on I-5 in California. I asked where he was & then I ask if he was with the truck 'No, he said, I hoofed it about a mile to a truckstop & I'm hanging out in the coffeeshop.' Ok, I rolled out there & found him picked him up & we went to the truck. We got there & no truck. He said 'I left it right here in the slow lane. ' I said 'You left it blocking the slow lane?' He said, 'Yeah, it was broke & would not move.' 'I left the flashers on.' So with that admission I called the CHP. They knew where his truck had been towed to. !

Until such time as you have determined exactly where a coolant leak is, and understand what it means, you should not run an engine for more than a minute or so MAX. If the leak is in a position that it can lower the coolant level in the block below the head/s then running for more than a minute or so could crack or warp the heads. In either case the head/s have to come off. In the case of warping you may get away with planing them level again. If they crack it's easier and cheaper (usually) to replace them Either way is is expensive and tim consuming. As for the trailer, where I'm from it's called a trombone trailer for obvious reasons. Though that is the first I have seen as a low loader.

We were definitely under the impression that the radiator was leaking, and it was pouring rain, so my thought was there was no reason to buy 22 gallons of coolant, if the radiator was leaking. After we got to TEC, they thought that the radiator was the issue as well, but putting a water hose in the coolant recovery tank, we were able to run enough water through the system and found the leaking hose, right next to the radiator.

Should have topped off with plane water befor running yes it takes a bit to warm up to heat water up but low water will not cool cylinder head’s remember they are running at 800 up to 1200 exhaust temp under load true your not under load so your more them likely fine just try not to run low or out of coolant if possible so you don’t cook your head gaskets some times smaller lines have shut off valves close then top of water or coolant get to nearest service center if no valves if it’s to a system that not engine related 2 vice grips to pinch it off temporarily can get you to a shop glad it all worked out for you

Hi Hoyt, I’m fairly mechanical and did check those things out. It appeared it was coming out under the radiator, as coolant was everywhere. I did talk to Prevost and Marathon and both thought it was the radiator. It was only after we were back at Marathon and could stick a hose in the radiator and run a lot of water through it, were we able to pinpoint where it was leaking. The heater hose running to my diesel fired heater was the culprit. The leak was on the very bottom and on the inside of the hose barb, couldn’t be seen before running all the water through it.

I would have thought that it would have been cheaper and quicker to just have the hose replaced in the rest area and continue on. I was a truck driver for 35 years and have operated that kind of trailer. That is a pretty expensive ride if you didn’t have some kind of coverage.

Hi Gary, you are correct, but at the time it was pouring rain and we thought it was our radiator core or tanks with a hole in them. But as you mentioned our road side service took care of the tow, nothing out of pocket to us. Thanks for watching.

I would think that a service call and Roadside repair would have been much faster and easier than having it towed? I drive a volvo vnl around 100,000 miles a year. I carry tools and spare parts and have fixed many small problems myself over the past 15 years... I have had to call a cab to go get parts. Uber nowadays.. I have had coolant lines, clamps and coolant delivered by parts companies.. Every time something breaks that I can fix myself I get extra parts and carry them with for the next time.... I have saved thousands of dollars and lots of time doing this. Fortunately I was a mechanic before I became an over the road trucker.......

Hey Rick, at first we thought it was a bad radiator, it was pouring rain and since we pay for the roadside service, decided to tow it. I do carry tools and could have easily replace the hose and coolant myself, but again it really appeared to be the radiator. I certainly didn’t want to wrestle with a 300 pound radiator in a roadside park, so the decision to tow it back into town, where we could have full hookups incase it was going to take any length of time to repair it, was simply to make. Thanks for watching.

so was it an engine gasket leak?
@TravelingMarlins
@TravelingMarlins Жыл бұрын
Hi, it actually turned out being a hose going over to our Webasto diesel fired heater. Since it can heat the engine, while Coach and hot water, all coolant lines run to it. Once we found the hose, it was an easy fix.

Hey Luke, the tow didn’t cost us anything, our roadside service picked the cost up. We paid for a piece of heater hose and 22 gallons of coolant and labor.

Hey Ziggy, looking back if we had known that was what the problem was, I would’ve taken care of it. But since we pay for the roadside service, and the tow didn’t cost us anything out of pocket, it was a small inconvenience and a big piece of mind not having to mess with it.

Water from a water tank to a heater is not coolant!!! Not sure why you said it was coolant consicering you said it didn't come from the radiator nor is the fluid colored as it was clear water!!! So it wasn't coolant you were referring to but water from a ho,ding tank!!!!
@TravelingMarlins
@TravelingMarlins Жыл бұрын
LWRC, not sure what you’re talking about. Maybe you misunderstood when I said we found the leak by sticking a water hose in the coolant recovery tank. Our diesel fired heater has different heating loops that run to it, engine, coach heat and water heating loops. The diesel heater sits in the driver’s side of the engine compartment, and our coolant is Detroit Power Cool, which is a very light purple color, which looks almost light straight water. Hopefully this clears up any confusion!

Hi Bruce, yes sir it would have been extremely expensive. I realize that some people think I should have just put a new hose and coolant in and kept going. But since it look like the radiator went bad, I was very happy to have it towed in to be fixed, where we had full RV hook ups for our house on wheels to stay in for however long it took. Thanks for watching!

It’s an auxiliary heater different brand names for them but it’s your auxiliary heater and that little piece of hose is always a problem and all the little hoses and connecting hoses on your bus engine will fail sooner or later I work on Rta buses For Cleveland on a rig like that you have to always watch for leaks he did a good job stopping and not driving it👍👍👍👍
@TravelingMarlins
@TravelingMarlins Жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, you are absolutely correct, at the time we replaced the heater hose, we also replaced all the other coolant lines running from the recovery tank to the engine as well. The hoses to the radiator had already been replaced. It was my fault, but I just overlooked that one 18 inch piece of heater hose and with the rain that day, I swore it was coming from the radiator. Thanks for sharing!
