Hmmm… 1,200lbs of hitch weight for a half-ton payload. My F150 has a respectable 1,765 lbs payload. However, you add the weights of a family of 2-5 people, pets, weight distribution hitch, camp gear, luggage and I’d be interested to see a half-ton not exceeding its payload with your recommendations of 1.000+ lbs of simply hitch weight.

What year is your Ford F-150? If it's older you are correct. If it's modern then it can handle a trailer this size if you have the correct tow package. Thanks for watching and commenting Mike

⁠@@RVBlogger i agree with Paul and Erin. 1200 pound payload is a lot to ask for from a half ton. It may pull the trailer but the hitch weight is too heavy for a half ton.

. @christopherhamm1574 Maybe so, but as an example, the bestselling 2023 Ford F-150, with the optional 5.0-liter V8, is capable of hauling up to 3,310 pounds in the bed. Newer pickups have a higher payload than older models. As always, you must look at your truck specs because they are all different. Every truck owner's manual has dozens of pages of specs depending on the options included with each model. I think it's best not to generalize regarding truck payloads or tow capacities. Each pickup should be evaluated independently. Thanks for watching and for your comment! Mike

I think all those trailers are beyond What a half ton can tow safely in my humble opinion. Once you load up those trailers with everything you’re gonna take and your trucks loaded up with everything you need. I think you’re way beyond payload to be safe.

It's very important for vehicle owner's to know the tow capacity of their vehicle. And we always say never tow more than 80% of your vehicle's tow capacity. Many half ton trucks have a tow capacity of 11,000-14,000 lbs using weight distribution. So it is very doable, you just need to know your vehicle.

@@RVBlogger Very true but I am realizing that the carrying capacity of my Tundra wont support the Tongue weight of trailer the wife is looking at. Tow capacity is ok but carry capacity looks to be low :( Love the walk thrus!

Great job you both. I really enjoy measering the bed, shower heigth,,and shower heigth as I am almost 6'7". Most of these campers I could not stay in. Being this tall sort of sucks some times. LOL

I love the front kitchens, too! I'd go for the Jayco or Winnebago. The Keystone doesn't have enough kitchen cabinets, is dark and the TV is too high.

Yup I won’t buy any trailer campers or campers in general. The prices in the USA are out of site and the build quality is very bad. If you do get a camper and have a problem under warranty the dealer won’t fix it until when ever they can get you scheduled which is never. If you’re lucky enough to get it in they keep it for ever or they just make it worse than when you brought it in. This industry just sucks.

@@boudica5883 I totally agree. I have an off road Rockwood esp and have had to redo all of the wiring and plumbing. I had to just replaced every screw and rivet. I also had to reseal everything right out of the gate. All I want is to get a slide in for the pickup. Nothing big as it’s just me using it.

It depends on the dealership that you buy it from. Camping World and General RV are notorious for being slow. Bish's will order the part and scavenge from a RV on their lot if they can't get a ETA on the part. The Manufacturer that you pick makes a difference in build quality. For example - you are having a earthquake driving down the road. If you get something with a off-road suspension there's less shaking so things are less likely to come apart. Ember is example of using a better suspension for travel trailers.

Great video! Also look at the Sunset Trail 272bh. Sleeps up to 10 with a tall ceiling, just 722lbs hitch weight and 5600lbs dry. Well within half-ton pickup range.

The tongue weight alone takes up most of the payload capacity of a 1/2 ton pickup, so it is not a good idea to tow any of these trailers you suggest. 2019 RAM 5.7 Hemi … as equipped, payload is 1480 and with a trailer tongue weight of nearly 800 pounds I am pushing the limit, but still OK as long as I am careful how I load the truck. Trailer is 6k dry, so I figure around 7k loaded. Again my 1/2 ton truck, as equipped states a tow capacity of 8750, still OK, but not as much leeway as I would prefer. Also, a bit shaky in the wind, my guess is a heavier truck would do better.

Hope the absorption fridge continue to be an option. If you always have hook-ups, generator or solar package, no problem with 12v fridge. If you boondock or spend an occasional night at a Harvest host or Walmart , you NEED an absorption fridge!

Absolutely too big for a half ton. The hitch weight alone will exceed the max hitch weight for almost every half ton truck out there. The hitch weight of a loaded 8800 lb GVWR trailer will be over 1200 lbs. That exceeds even the max hitch weight of my truck with the max tow package. You'll be way over gross with the average half ton truck. Definitely tow these with a 3/4 ton truck.

@@RVBlogger Mike, do you even tow a trailer? I thought you have a motor home. You are giving bad advice to many people out there with 1/2 tons. All of these trailers will exceed most 1/2 tons payload capacity…. Even the modern 1/2 tons! I think you should change your title and do some more research on safe towing with a 1/2 ton truck. The GVWR tow rating of these trucks is only part of the equation.

I’m not in favor of the window being at the headboard. For me in gives a sense of feeling not safe and exposed. I would prefer the sleeping area to be more secure. At first glance, the dinette table looked outta place, but with the leaf and game storage hidden within the table, it made me warm up to the idea of it. Jayco white Hawk, bathroom felt more residential. The shower size is larger folks friendly

Not a big fan of windows at the head of the bed either. We had one in our first motorhome and the morning sun would cause us to wake up hot and sweaty sometimes🤣. Had to install reflective material to help minimize that. Shower/bathroom size is so important! I don't want to spend all that money and not have it user friendly. Thanks MadeUpLikeADoll!

Thanks Susan and Mike for the good walk throughs. Winnebago with an absorption fridge (snicker). Since Thor owns Jayco and Keystone the two are just cookie cutter, same same. Not a fan of either Winnebago nor Thor, but still watched. The Jayco's fridge, I'd be smashing my head into that overhang. Thanks again, keep up the great work.

Hitch weight on everything but the Jayco is wayy to much for most 1/2 tons to handle safely once you factor in cargo, gear and people.

You are incorrect! GVWR means nothing it is all about payload. Hitch weight is dry at the factory, most are quite a bit above that when loaded. Then passengers and cargo must be added. Few if any half tons are above 1800 pounds payload. Bad advice!!! My recently purchased 24' mini light hitch weight is listed at 634#, weighed after propane, battery and some gear in storage, no water in the tank it was 840#, the hitch apparatus alone is almost 100#. Our Silverado payload is 1654# so we are right at the top with no reserve. We take delivery of our 3/4 pickup this week.@@RVBlogger

I drive a RAM 1500 with max towing capability and the camper we pull is a 22ft Palomino Puma Ultra Lite that comes in at 3100 dry weight. On a good hill or a good crosswind, it gets questionable in my opinion. But I am also not one to stretch the limit much when it comes to my families safety. I would not pull 8900 with a 1500 unless absolutely had to.

The Keystone needs to dump that dinett and get something without the knee knockers. Get the TV off the ceiling, put it donw at a viewable level.

All three are way too much weight for almost every half ton truck out there. I can easily over gross the max hitch weight on my half ton truck and I have the max tow package. I'm looking at trailers in this weight range and I've already determined that a 3/4 ton truck is what's needed to safely tow an 8000-9000 lb trailer.

I totally agree, all of these are over a half ton's GVWR. I have a 2500HD and never exceed 80% of the GVWR, it's my safety margin that has served me well in over 40 years of towing trailers. It's also different here in the Western US with mountains roads but still I wouldn't even attempt it with a half ton.

The 2024 highland ridge open range BH26 is perfect for my half ton hemi.. I dont even need a redistribution hitch or airbags... Has anyone ever noticed when cars pass you on the highway going really fast, the trailer gets pulled over like the other vehicle is sucking it over. The faster they pass and the bigger they are, the worse it is.

We don't really like a window at the end of the bed either. You're right, not many TT offer W/D prep. Those that do end to be 33' and longer. Love your reviews. I would like to see what road mode looks like. The first one gave that on the floor plan, but the others did not. Could you also let us know what is offered in ceiling fans. We have a 2015 Rockwood 2109s and it has max air fans in the living area and bathroom and we use both all of the time. Thanks again for great reviews.

Yea i mean if its have the max tow package it can tow 9000-10000 lbs on current gen trucks but majority of them are under that due to their most common gear ratios

If a camper is 32' long - that's not 1/2 ton recommended. If you are in a windy area you'll be white knuckling it because your F-150/Chevy 1500/RAM 1500 is going to be pushed around with the camper.

I'll agree with that statement, i pull a 33 foot with a tundra and it can get pushed around pretty good. BUT. The bigger pain? 6mpg with a 26 gallon tank.... I also have to watch my payload, big time. 1,500 lbs goes fast when you have 750lbs tongue weight. NOW. half ton with P rated tires? yeah, you're gonna be all over the place. Learned that years ago with VW busses. They actually handle like a truck with load range D on em, vs giant marshmallow with p rated tires.

I agree a length of no longer then 26 feet and the weight shouldn’t be no more then maybe 6,500 dry weight , this is just right for our Ford 150 eco boost with tow package. This is a good match. Because we tow 26 feet and 6, 220 dry weight.

We haven't discussed this topic in the past but we are trying to incorporate some kind of information to help. All those companies do a good job building those rigs, and I like it when the bathroom is next to the bedroom…. But when a big company leaves small things out like supports for cabinet doors and cheaply made kitchen drawers. Then to me they’re dropping the ball and should build these things correctly.

Completely agree! Why inconvenience the owner when it comes to features like cabinet doors and drawer bottoms...just to save a few dollars. Disappointing! Thanks Robert for your support!
