RVing Alaska - McCarthy - Hate the washboard road... love the town and people!

A long gravel, washboard riddled road through a mountain to a great town... McCarthy!
So you’d think we would have had enough of gravel, washboard, pothole roads, right? After the Dalton and the Top Of The World Highway we thought we’d seen it all. Nope! The McCarthy Highway, which takes you out to the bridge where you can walk a mile to the quaint cool town, is probably the worst road we’ve been on in 2019! The worst! Why? Well, one couple blew two tires on the same pothole. And the washboard road is almost non-stop with grooves big enough to had a set of golf clubs in... easily. They rattle your dishes... they rattle your windows... and they just about rattle your fillings out in your mouth if you have them.
But... once you get to the end of this treacherous road you get to walk a mile to a town that takes you back in time to an era when things were much, much simpler. Like when horses wouldn’t mind all the washboards kind of simple. A town where dogs are not only encouraged to be in town they are not allowed to be on a leash. You read that right. You cannot have your dog on a leash in town. They call it free range kids and dogs and it is really cool and you can bet, Maggie LOVED it!

We are fellow Travato owners and we have had Rad mini ebikes for three years and they have carried us over deserts, beaches and mountains without a hitch. They are tough durable bikes and the Rad people are great to work with. Rad bikes are worth every penny! PopaBear

Been to McCarthy twice. Last summer I camped by the river next to the footbridge. Did a tour of the Kennecott mill and a hike onto the Root Glacier.

That was one of biggest regrets was not going to Kennecott and walking on Root Glacier, we were so close. I guess we’ll do that next time. Thanks for watching.

We traveled the McCarthy Highway and were also in Valdez (your previous video) last year. Your video brought back great memories for us and we recognized many of the places you showed. We took our time and really enjoyed the drive. The National Park even has a free CD that describes a lot of the things you see n the road. If you ever make it back, you may want to consider going on to Kennecott, which is only five miles further on from McCarthy and has a regularly scheduled shuttle that goes there. It has old mining and processing buildings plus some great hikes in the area. Thanks again for the memories.

eBikes are great-get with pedal assist & throttle so you can choose to pedal like regular bike, or need a little oomph use pedal assist, or find you’ve biked too far but too tired out for return trip back then use the throttle.

ELECTRIC BIKES, my husband and I got ours last year and we love it, we can go farther and see more, our dog rides on the back of one and the other one has a saddle bag for two tiny folding chairs for a picnic, I also put a small cooler bag on the front for some cold drinks. We bought the folding one they sell at General RV but the only thing I would change is getting one with the bigger tires they are better for sand. Oh we also got two extra batteries so we can go even further👍🏻another key thing is the seat lol I put a thin stadium seat cushion on mine because comfort over fashion lol 😂 make sure to check the height of these I’m 5.4” and even the shortest seat setting is a bit tall for me and the weight they are heavy buggers to lift, might want a pulley system to put them on the back of the Travato if it can handle it🤔 Thanks for sharing your journey we love watching👍🏻stay safe🙋🏼‍♀️

When you are all done with your trip to Alaska and Yellowstone, etc., I would love to know what you would take with you next time and what you would leave at home (kind of a "wrap it up" video). As someone who is similar in age to you, Lynn, I would love to know what you think. One thing from Owen I heard was E-bikes on the "Bring it" list!

I sure do miss that area ~ my kids and I lived in Chitina for 8 yrs... love the McCarthy area oh heck I just love the whole area! The Cut is what they call that one lane road there when you head out of Chitina. Oh thank you! 💛💛💛💛 ps watch for sheep as well!

Hi Owen! I’m subscribed and I never miss a new video now. Your channel is my favorite, and it’s inspiring for me. I loved the trailer idea and I’ve added it to my own “someday” list. It gives you the trip-planning flexibility to choose between “toys & gear” versus “maximum mobility & access”. I think that’s a whole lot better than being stuck with the limitations of a class C. But then again, having Lynn with you, you’d probably be happy traveling the country with an old station wagon and a griddle :)

You talk about a E bicycle we have to RAD POWER BICYCLE THEY ARE THE BEST ABOUT $1400.00 WE PUT ON ABOUT 1600 MILES ON THEM IN 4 MONTHS
