FYI regarding fueling at a truck stop. I was a truck driver nearly 30yrs. When a driver is finished fueling, they will pull forward allowing a truck that might be behind them to fuel. This is just a courtesy to the other driver. If a driver does pull forward and stops, they will more than likely go into the truck stop building for food, drink, restrooms or something else. As for your comment about not staying at rest areas, thank you! There is simply not enough parking spaces for big rigs. Even tho I'm now retired, I can speak on behalf of ALL truck drivers that they appreciate your leaving a spot for them.
@JamieStuff
@JamieStuff 5 ай бұрын
As a current trucker, 10 minutes is generally considered the maximum "pull forward" time. Plenty of time to potty, grab some caffeine and maybe some prepared food, and go. If there's a fast food place with an app, I'll order while fueling (or waiting to fuel), and then it's grab and go.

As a trucker and former Cali resident (now a proud Texan), I can tall you this: 1. California HATES trucks. If they could figure out a way to ban any vehicle over 26000 pounds, they would. Insane fuel prices, very little parking (and MANY restrictions on building more parking), and that idiotic statewide 55 speed limit for anything towing a trailer. (I saw that 60!) 2. Sacramento needs an enema.

Born & raised in N California & I’ve camped & RV’d my entire life. During the fair weather months the most beautiful place to travel thru the mountains North to South is I-5 to Mt Shasta. Go east on 89 and travel over to 395 south. It will take you through NV in the Reno area. RV parks are cheaper and it’s beautiful. 395 below Lake Tahoe you will find the most expensive fuel cost in the nation due to its remoteness and California special fuel blend.

Guys, you need to join the Elks. As I watch this, we’re in our 38’ DP at the Burbank elks, 10 minutes from Universal City. 50 amp & water, $20 a night. And our first drink in the lodge bar was free. I would say we’ve found a majority of CA Elks take reservations, too. Oh…and yes, CA is pricey, but so are Alaska and Canada. We’re enjoying RVing everywhere we can, while we are healthy!

The summer of 2021 I left the RV at home (10 mpg towing) packed my tenting gear and took my grandkids to see the National Parks of the west. 8,000 miles total. We saw Utah, Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming and South Dakota! We camped mostly in National or State Forests at less than $20 night, and splurged on a few motels with swimming pools;) If your viewers’ budget is tight, there are options to be more thrifty!

I agree, Cali is so expensive. Our son lives in Richmond, just northeast of Oakland, so we have been there often. We are lucky we can park our camper on the street in front of his house while we are there. We have taken route 1, a couple of times, and it is beautiful. Boondocking is a great way to camp in Cali, and we do it a lot. We don't make reservations either. We fly by the seat of our pants. Oh, if you go to Mendocino, make sure you don't plan on fueling there. Their one station runs about 3 - 4 dollars a gallon higher than 10 miles down the road! On our trip home last fall, we found rest areas that have areas set aside for overnight campers and you aren't taking up truck areas. They were along highway 70. Happy camping!

I’m a truck driver. General truck stop etiquette for the fuel island is to pull forward after you are done fueling if you are only going to be there for ten minutes or less. If you are going to be longer , it’s best to go find a spot and park.

California accountant here. Gotta correct you on the gas tax.. the 2.25% and 13% is just the state rate... most counties / localities add onto that. So for example if you are in Los Angeles you're likely going to pay 5% for regular/mid/premium and 15.25% for diesel. It's basically going to vary depending on what county and city you are in.

We RVed California in 2022 when diesel was $9.99 a gallon. Since we took the Pacific Highway, we had to refuel at smaller gas stations. We have a 50-gallon tank, and smaller stations have set money limits.. we had to swipe CC 3x to refuel.. on that 2nd swipe, the bank would start sending alerts.. it was hilarious. Despite the expense of California, we had a great adventure! So many fun memories.

Spoiler alert! Probably a busted spring or a spring bolt has lost its lock nut and has walked out back up the road.. Happens a lot, it seems. If you watch Finding Our Someday, they've been through 2 full spring packs (one for each axle) because of the rough roads they travel. We lived in Reno, NV, then had a place in Southern Nevada west of Las Vegas. You are right, California is a beautiful state. We've visited some spectacular places, that's for sure! Prices were pretty steep even 27 years ago. Almost be worthwhile carrying 30 gallons of spare diesel. As for biodiesel, you should probably use an additive like Hotshot's Secret EDT to treat the fuel and save yourself future heartaches.

There are some beautiful areas left in California. It's such a shame they keep burning up and falling off. It appears that was the southern tip of South Carolina crossing into Georgia. I hope it looks that way next year. Hope you stayed safe. Thanks for sharing.❄️

Currently RVing in California. Left Las Vegas late December & went into southern California. Making our way northward. Just went through Bakersfield yesterday going to a TT park. I have full hookup & I’m not paying the ungodly prices you talk about. I do have a membership with TT. We will be using national forest this summer in our travels without the hookups. Seniors in a 33 ft. 5th wheel & loving it. We were paying $4 a gallon for gas in the northeast states this past summer & fall. We use Gas Buddy for fuel. California is a beautiful state & we plan on coming back next year to winter. Travel wisely & enjoy the adventure.

And yes ive hauled it as well, biofuel can be made from any sugar drink and even algie ! Diesal can get a fungi build up, to much and it can hurt a diesal !

You made the right choice not to take the cutoff road from Redding over to Hwy 1 it is very narrow and very twisty. Also the portion of Hwy 1 from Ft. Bragg down through SF is very narrow and twisty and with a rig your size it would not be a very fun drive. The section from Monterey south is very nice but prone to mudslides this time of year. Then there is the fuel costs. They SUCK especially diesel. I live in Krazyfornia and sometimes I have actually dropped my trailer and gone to a regular station because the cost can be up to a dollar cheaper than your truck stops. Oh and ignore that stupid 55 MPH when towing BS we have as no one but a very few people drive 55 it just screws up the traffic flow, 65 is always a safe bet.

This brings us more peace of mind, knowing that we made the right decision. Thank you for taking the time to share! You should have stayed at Orange Grove RV park outside of Bakersfield, you could have picked free oranges to offset your expenses. 😜As a California resident, I'm glad to see you are not trashing the state, it's expensive, but worth every penny. Palm Springs is the best place on Earth, hope you make it here. If visiting Joshua tree, avoid the KOA and stay at Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground, it's cool and quirky just like you two.

@@HappilyEverHanks So I have to ask; do you foresee a time when you will want to take a break from the RV life and return to a regular house? Your adventures have inspired me to travel further with my trailer. I did a 6000 km trip last summer over 38 days. This year it will be a bit further over about 45 days. So, thanks for your example of a great adventure on the road.

We've been in Northern California visiting our daughter up in Red Bluff since November. Just started full-time RVing. We're leaving at the end of the month, but the price of gas, diesel and food are the highest we've ever seen in all of our years RVing. Honestly, can't wait to leave. Heading back to Florida (our homestead) for the month of April. Really interested to see what's wrong with your trailer axles. If we had to guess, you have a bent or broken spring hanger. Good luck with that. Fans of your channel for over two years. Dave & Donna

Nana, I totally agree with you. If you do have time traveling, slow down and smell the roses in the area you are traveling through. My bride ( of 36 yrs. ) are both retired now. We went on an east coast trip 2 yrs ago. We live 1 hr. north of Atlanta. Had a plan of thru Tenn., Kentucky, Ohio, up to Niagra Falls. Over to New Hampshire to visit friends and back down the east coast. Point being, we had certain spots to hit. We just were nomads and probably 50% of our stops were places we just saw or had locals tell us about along the way. Most of those were some of the best stops we made along the way. Like when we were at the Orville & Wilber Wright bycicle shop. The ranger asked us if we were going to the Air Force Museum. We took an extra day and went since it was just a few miles away. Boy, was that a fun day. Spent the whole day there. Another was we were driving and my bride screamed out, we are near the Mark Twain house. Was not sure about that one but I said OK. Boy was I wrong, what an amazing place. That is 2 of the many places we stopped on the spur of the moment that made our trip so great. If you have time, stop and smell the roses. We drove 4005 miles in 32 days and was the best trip of our lives. We do not RV, stayed in motels. Bride got so good at finding places to stay on the fly while we were on the road to our next stop at the end of each day. Carl & Nana, have been subscribed and following you for about 3 yrs. to get ideas for our trips. Thank you !!!! LOVE your channel !!!!! Next trip is middle part of the country next year. After that is the western 1/3 of the US. Middle I think is 6 to 7 week trip. West side I guess is going to be 2 months plus. Looking forward to both with the ideas you have given us. Thanks !!!!!

Being from California and having an old job where I traveled up and down the state on a regular basis, this is a trip down memory lane for me. Thanks for that. We still live here and yes, we are the highest taxed state in the nation now as a result of our current and recent leadership. It has really fleeced us of our hard earned cash to keep living here but it's hard to go anywhere else. I love your videos and enjoy your channel. I need to get back through and catch up a bit. Safe travels you two. What happened in the axle area? Take care.
