How about a properly funded asylum and immigration system that fairly and efficiently sifts through the claims and determines them in weeks not months and years, and safe routes so that human beings don’t drown whilst trying to find a better life. Both things so easy, just reverse the Tory austerity cuts that slashed such departments to the bone and that contrarily created the nightmare for both parties that was endless limbo in hotels and b&b’s, hugely expensive for the tax payer, hugely frustrating for the claimant and a real issue for local communities with social cohesion. What I propose is cheaper than any gimmick or posturing, humane but fair, welcoming but also firm where a claim isn’t justified, simple.

Stopping them is easy, you just make it easier for everyone on earth to come here legally, then no one will pay to come here illegally. Sadly, though, the gangs will find another illegal way to make money.

Well how did we enforce them for hundreds of years before someone had the idea of sending a few hundred people to Rwanda to act as a 'deterrant'? Why is that suddenly the only practical way of dealing with people? The best way of dealing with the asylum system is threefold. Firstly, invest more in the system so that once people get here and claim asylum their claim is processed in a few weeks or months and doesn't drag on for years. Secondly, reopen legal routes to claim asylum in Britain so that there's no need for people to sneak over on boats. Thirdly, have agreements in place with other countries so that those who's applications fail can be removed quickly. Farage's idea that we just pick them up and take them back to France is for the birds, because without the agreement or co-operation of the French it won't work. And if that agreement was difficult under a Macron government it will be impossible to get under a Le Pen government who will never agree to migrants who have left France coming back.

When you process them, you can actually send people back to where they come from when they aren't legitimate refugees, and when you process those claims and send back economic migrants, fewer economic migrants come. It isn't complicated, it's blisteringly obvious, and it works.

Hardly, whether you agree or disagree with the scheme morally it was not cost effective. They only managed to deport 5 people to Rwanda at the cost of £60 million each totalling £300 million. Generally it does not cost this much to deport or process people, this scheme was just a way for Sunak to look like he was doing something about it when he was yet again wasting our money. So the decision is not to accommodate migrants but to save money for the country.
