In this weeks episode we begin our journeys in the country of Rwanda. We were able to discover the capital of Kigali (fun fact: it is located in the exact center of the country) and than travel two and a half hours to begin our time near the Volcanoes National Park located in the northwestern part of Rwanda. This part of our trip was truly a once in a lifetime experience that we all will cherish forever. Gorilla Trekking through the Volcanoes National Park was amazing, climbing up almost 1,500 feet to see these mountain gorillas (play-fighting with one another) and the rare silverback gorilla.
At the beginning of our stay in Rwanda our family visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial. The Genocide Memorial is a place of both remembrance and learning which is dedicated to the victims of genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Out of respect for the lives loss, I did not film this part of the trip.
We were also able to visit Handspun Hope which is an organization that provides support to local communities in Rwanda through job creation, community building, and spiritual counsel. Being able to see how these women have found a passion in the process of creating organic yarn was amazing to witness. Lastly, we visited The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund where we learned about Dian Fossey and her impact on the population of mountain and silverback gorillas in the Rwandan rainforests. Check out their website here to learn more about it: gorillafund.org/ellencampus/
