When I was a younger guy, as someone who played defender (usually sweeper) and was often a captain, if the offense of the opposing team was ever one on one with your keeper, it's not the keeper that failed, it's the defense, and I always made sure my defense knew when we failed our keeper. If we were doing our jobs right, the keeper should never have to touch the ball.
