LYRICS
everybody ought to treat a stranger right, long ways from home
everybody ought to treat a stranger right, a long ways from home
be careful how you treat a stranger, by belying you turn him away
but the fear that he might endanger will drive him from your gate
chorus
be mindful of your speaking, careful how you go along
you must always treat a poor stranger right and accept him in your home
chorus
all of us down here are strangers, none of us have no home
don’t ever hurt your brother and cause him to feel alone
chorus
everybody ought to treat a stranger right
Ry Cooder’s latest album, The Prodigal Son, is all America, our spiritual, hopeful voices, our raw cries and our sly provocations, voiced through the songs of the Pilgrim Travelers, The Stanley Brothers, Blind Willie Johnson, and Ry Cooder himself. This is black and white gospel church music, our own history of the spirit, sounding completely fresh and contemporary, framed by Cooder's expressive vocals and graceful, elegant guitar work. Aided by his son, drummer and chief collaborator, Joachim Cooder, The Prodigal Son is a deft commentary on our ailing moral state. This is music for these times, a fearless dive into the country’s soul and the man, Ry Cooder.
For nearly 50 years, the immense scope and influence of Ry Cooder's music has perhaps been felt as much, or more than heard. As musician, producer, songwriter and sage, the Santa Monica, California native has explored music and culture from across the city, the state, the country and around the world.
Over the years, Ry Cooder has received various awards and accolades such as:
2017 - BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards- Lifetime achievement
2007 - Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award Instrumentalist
2003 Grammy Award (Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album) - Buenos Hermanos,
2003 Grammy Award (Best Pop Instrumental Album) - Mambo Sinuendo
1997 Grammy Award (Best Tropical Latin Performance) - Buena Vista Social Club
1994 Grammy Award (Best World Music Album) - Talking Timbuktu with Ali Farka Toure
1993 Grammy Award (Best World Music Album) - A Meeting by the River
1988 Grammy Award (Best Recording for Children) - Pecos Bill
The Prodigal Son Track Listing
1. straight street
2. shrinking man

4. everybody ought to treat a stranger right
5. the prodigal son
6. nobody’s fault but mine
7. you must unload

His playing has got better with age like a Schott Perfecto biker jacket, or a pair of vintage LEVIS. Why is it always ‘fine wine’ ? How many of us have actual experience of old ‘fine wine’?

Good evening all, love this song, what can I say I love all of the Cooder family music and the people they have chosen to play with them on this music .And the sentiment of the words I live in a retirement community in N Michigan its sad but many of them about 1/4 don't always know where they are, my fav was Eleanor lived to 100 a petite sweet lady I would roll up to her ask if she wanted to race me she would get a big smile on her face. The Senior center in Roscommon gave her a big party.. She had been in the Marines but couldn't talk anymore and passed a month or so after her birthday. .

Saw him first in the mid '80s at the Palace in Hollywood with his full review, in the middle of which Elvis Costello walked on stage and sang a duet with Ry. Saw him next in the 90's in a bar in LA doing a fund-raiser for free with Flaco Jimenez and Harry Dean Stanton all on stage together. That was the "house band"! Harry sang his signature standard, Cancion Mixteco. RIP Harry.

This guy is one of our great talents in this country, his skill is legendary, he's backed up many others.... Taj Mahal, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and more. He was into "World Music" before they felt the need to create yet another category (that's segregation in the music business) as if.... He has done many soundtracks for successful movies that alot of us have seen. You may not like this guy's politics, sometimes they bother me but thats alright, he's "old school" and so am I. Only in this country could I have had the opportunity to hear his talented guitar playing, be influenced by the ideas that he chose to express in the music and be free to choose for myself how I was influenced by them. I love that and "Cancel Culture" would not have allowed many of the songs he's recorded to have been recorded and that is shameful. This man's music is "archival" it should be listened to, referred to and referenced by future generations. Besides all the "socio-political" benefits of exposing yourself to the ideas represented in his music, he remains a freakin' great bluesman.

Many years ago I saw Ry make people cry and a little later jump around with delight with the sound of his music and storytelling. Because of the very great and blessed Ry Cooder the world better places to live, this man has the God-given gifts to cure all people ills and pains, I bet he could make the blind see and the crippled walk by people just listing to his music and talks about injustices and the great greed of some others which only causes great troubles to the less well off. What more in this great big world do we needed, only more of this master player, singer, and educator
