Black Panther is now showing on the Steinberg Screen at the BAM Harvey Theater. To mark the opening, OkayAfrica's CEO, Abiola Oke, sat down with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler for a Q&A centered on the film's themes, cast, and cultural implications.
Marvel Studios’ Black Panther follows T’Challa as he returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. When a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king-and Black Panther-is tested. Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) directs.

Ultimate Fanboy I have both. Fav Directors: Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Ridley Scott, & George Lucas. Favorite movies: Selma, Goodfellas, Godfather Part 2, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, & Boys in the Hood.

I, along with millions of others knew he was something, at fruitvale station. Him, Jordan..look at how they were given these roles, the opportunities could have just as easily not happened, it shows all the potential people have whom we've never even seen yet

Awesome that he mentioned Fish Tank. Its masterful. Un Prophete has always been a big influence on him and he's been very focal about that in the past. The very first seen in Creed in the juvenile detention centre, the boys are wearing the exact same prison outfit as the characters in Un Prophete.

I will definitely check out Fishtank on Ryan’s recommendation. I loved his vision of the women of Wakanda and how great a society where men and women were truly equal could be.

C Rizzy Ive been researching him and looking at alot of his interviews and there is something about him that is very profound. I see that in his face. If your lacking or in need of someone to tell you how great your are as well......sorry but I'm not the one. It's interesting to note that he has a stutter but he is a great director. I think no one could have done a better version of Black Panther and I can't wait for Wakanda Forever in November 2021.

Smokey B, some people prefer Malcom X's method for black rights to MLK's method. To him Malcom X may be greater. We won't all belive the same person to be the most impactful in our lives. He's not ignorant of MLK, come on, he's well educated, he just prefers X. I believe in the movie 'Selma' it is shown that MLK tries to recruit Malcom but he tells him they don't do things the same way, it won't work, although they were after similar goals.

I like Andrea Arnold a lot, but Fish Tank is one of her most overrated movies. The girl is excellent, as are damn near all the non-actors, but Fassbender clearly reverted to acting "techniques" and it was so artificial. The entire arc of where everything was going was so predictable. As pretentious as American Honey might be, it's artistically much better, as is her triumph Wuthering Heights.

For anybody who wants to see a film that is about the real life of people of colour, I would recommend Girlhood, a french film and infinitely better than most of the stuff the english speaking cinema produces. Black Panther was average not anywhere near as good as Spike Lee's best tho...

Ruth Carter got an Oscar nomination and win for both Malcolm X and Black Panther. Angela Basset was also in Boys in the Hood as well. Nice to see him working with people he admires
