This is pretty much how I'd describe my own feelings about this band, I had never sat down and listened to the entire LD50 album, though I did see them live in 2003, and I was very impressed with the bass player. Then the other day, (it's now 21 years later) a friend played LD50 in his car and it suddenly came back to me seeing the bass playing perform live so long ago, so I finally listened to the whole record, and I think it's a strong album and I probably shouldn't have dismissed this band just because I thought they were a watered down Slipknot clone, and I wasn't a huge fan of that band either

Hmm. Not sure if this helps but in a bass player magazine feature around the time end of all things to come came out, it says he used a pedulla buzz fretless in the interview. I don’t have it anymore but Ryan is on the cover. EDIT: Found it. It’s Jan 2003 issue. You can still find it on eBay but I can’t find a digital transcription anywhere. Maybe someone here has it and can confirm. Double EDIT: it’s the one you mention in the video. I 100% recall Ryan talking about both playing fretless and that’s it’s a pedulla

You should really look into Jon Stockman from Karnivool. His band might not be as famous, but the guy is a total gear nerd and has some extremely elaborate pedalboards and set-ups. Not to mention that Karnivool has some of the weirdest tunings and is famous for how intricate they are when it comes to creating the best live-tone they can. He's also the guy behind the Alpha/Omega pedals from Darkglass (named after one of their songs), and in great parts responsible for that modern, grunty distortion tone that modern metal bassists nowadays love to use. Also, he is just about as much of a Warwick lover as Ryan was for over two decades. There's sadly not too much information out there about him apart from the few videos about his pedalboard on KZfaq, but you might be able to ask him some questions on Facebook in that regard, he might be willing to give some insight into his live rigs and elaborate further on his gear.

Yo Alfie,....yo Alfie. He is a great player of that there is no doubt. But..not quite my thing. His tapping technique reminds me of Doug Wimbish. Great run down graced with your humble humour as ever.

On the song "nothing to Gein" Ryan is using a subtle vibrato technique. Its still on the 5 string thumb. I can play it as well, just take a lot of practice. Hope this helps mate.

@@WhichBass It might have something to do with the thumb bass. I've owned a 4 string Thumb since 2003 - played live and recorded with it. Seemed to move around a bit. One guy said in a forum it is easier to play the Thumb shirtless - thought he was kidding. Nope

@@WhichBass I got to meet Mudvayne at a show in 2005, and my only question to Ryan was "How did you get to be so damn good and fluid.". He just smiled, chuckled, and said, "I don't know man, I just picked it up one day and never put it down." Matt was in a sour mood that day, though. Oh well, I got all of their signatures on my shirt and hat!

That weird letter they penned at 15:55 with the Zeta cross breeding nonsense... GWAR was doing this stuff when they were all still in middle school. I’m sure GWAR was flattered that bands like Mudvayne, slipknot, etc were so heavily influenced by their antics and carried the torch into the 21st century.
