Agreed - both very useful.

Mugo is a single flush tree, as is Scots Pine and Japanese White Pine.

Needle plucking is only done on multi flush pines to distribute the energy evenly across the tree. So this would include japanese black pine or japanese red pine. You might remove some needles when wiring a tree, but it is not done on single flush pines such as sylvestris (scotts) as a way of controlling energy distribution. If you are not sure then watch it again......

A lot depends on your location and climate, hard to be general about the answer. In the UK with a JWP in development, I would rarely pinch candles.I let them extend and the prune back branches in early Summer to produce back budding. I'm sure there's more than one way however, as with most things bonsai!!

What about European Black Pine or Pinus Nigra? I'm thinking specifically Austrian Pine. Is this a single or double flush species? I know japanese black is double but does this translate to all blacks?

May I use both technic ( cutting-pinching ) on the same tree (Wintergold mugo pine). I want to develope top of the tree but lower part of the tree at refinement stage.
