Life expectancy is longer because of our health care system. Here in Australia, you don't have to die if you don't have private health care. The private and public systems work in tandem.

Life expectancy is also more closely related to vaccination rates. ACT has the highest life expectancy at 84 years, Tasmania is 82 and 7th worst, NT is 78.5 and there is a lot of correlation there due to vaccination rates as well as access to healthcare in indigenous communities.

Life expectancy is mainly about preventative health care rather than sewing you up after accidents in a hospital, going and getting stuff sorted early in life before it snowballs. People in the US will avoid going to the doctor unless they really need to, in Australia, go whenever to have whatever addressed.

I had shoulder replacement surgery in 2022 and they discovered that I had a heart problem that needed surgery. I paid nothing for these surgeries. I don't think you can do that in the USA. Our health care system is part of the reason that we have a longer life expectations.

Education or permanent residency? Many don't even care what they study they just want a pathway to citizenship. Make student visas no further stay condition and watch our international students disappear. If they were really here for education they would come for the degree even if it means no chance of staying afterwards.

USA spends 17% of GDP on healthcare yet it’s not universal. Australia spends 10% of GDP on a Universal Health Care system. You’ll find other countries with a universal health care systems are similar. Private health care in the USA is profit driven and layered in administration fees and complex plans. And in Australia, we do have a supplementary Private health care system, so far those that think we have no choice in Australia, that’s incorrect. Americans assume they have the best of everything until they realise they don’t….

Health care in Australia is very good. A couple of months ago I had an af episode. My wife took my pulse and it was 130. No panic went to doctors next day who referred me to a specialist the next day and have a monitor fitted. Next day visted specialist had monitor fitted and went home. Got a call a couple of hours later to go to local hospital was admitted to casualty next day moved to the cardiac word. Diagnosed with af and fluid on lungs. Another 3 days later cardiologist proceeded to give me an alt control delete, is stop start defib to restart. No food etc the night before. Same time I noticed pulse seemed to have reset on its own. Next day rolled into op theatre. A thin gaunt figure was at the end of my bed. I asked whether he was the grim reaper? No I am the cardiologist whist the rest of the room was having a good laugh. Looked at my file and pronounced I was ok and did not require the procedure. Released a couple of days later. No cost for all of this but it is Australia.

My family has had private health cover for over 40 years. My husband got metastatic pancreatic cancer, had chemotherapy for 15 months until he could no longer tolerate it, lived three months after and died two years after diagnosis. All we had to pay is a co-payment of $250 per year. His treatment cost over $45,000.

Re your comment about the 'badass bald eagle'. The Australian wedge tail eagle, for example, has a verified wingspan of 9'6'' and is longer and heavier and can see into the ultraviolet. It also attacks paragliders, gliders and skydivers and mining drones. On the other hand magpies gang up on them

Ryan it's not just obesity with the life expectancy. We have a lot of obesity in Australia as well.... it's the access to healthcare. So many US citizens don't go to the doctor, don't call ambulances and can't see specialists because to do so will bankrupt them. So they will die earlier than an Australian who has access to those things for a minimum cost if not free..... never underestimate what a Universal Healthcare system delivers. Even our drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres use a flat fee of a percentage of whatever support payment you are receiving. One thing I am proud of as an Australian is our governments assistance in trying to address addictions, long term health problems and psychological problems. We aren't perfect, far from it. But we are trying without allowing big corporations to come in and make it profit driven rather than health/results driven.

@@Paul-nn9oj Well it's all part of mental health.... overeating is part of mental health, alcohol and drug use is part of mental health....I don't think most of us don't gaf..... it's just that it is hard to finally surrender and ask for help.... I say this as a person who has surrendered to 6 rehabs and at least 9 detox units.... and I am still struggling today.... the struggle out of addiction and mental health is not black and white... it is actually a constant struggle your whole life.....I'll still order a family meal deal worth $50 from KFC when I'm drunk....and eat the whole lot.... over a few days....I'm not obese... but damn my liver is not happy....

Passport access is how many countries you can visit without arranging for a visa beforehand. It is a little flawed of a metric, since (for example) Australian visitors can visit China visa free for 2 weeks, whereas American visitors can only access for 3 days. Still counts as 1. Similarly UK passport holders can go to Hong Kong for 6 months and even conduct business there, whereas Aus/US passport holders can only be tourists for a month.

I have met quite a few 80 year olds who dont have internet, don’t use banking apps, only watch free to air tv, have a cell phone but it’s only used for others to call them…..if they hear it.

My daughter is a cafe worker, yes she has two part time jobs and is a student, but she lives in downtown Sydney. My second son is a barman and his partner works in a restaurant and they live in neutral bay which is 10 mins from city centre and 5 mins from north shore harbour; their apartments are very nice but generally 1 bedroom. So you can live in Sydney more cheaply than you think although home ownership is near to impossible for these workers.

We do have quite a lot of guns (but very, very few handguns), but protection from other people is not a valid reason for owning or obtaining one, except in restricted occupations such as bank security, police and armed forces. Our laws do not encourage or validate vigilantism, so we aren’t allowed to carry them around unless we are transporting them to another place for use (such as target practice or for rural pest control), and they must be locked up when not specifically in use. Black market guns do exist, but are very, very expensive, so are not practical for theft (if you can afford one, you don’t need to steal). They are mostly used by career criminals, mostly in gang/drug supply-related situations, and on other criminals.

US citizens make up 5% of the world pop, 20% of the worlds incarcerated are US citizens in US jails. WOW!

The extra 5 years life expectancy is purely down to Universal health care. If going to hospital is going to bankrupt you, you only go when it is almost too late. An Australian goes at early symptoms and has the greater chance of survival. Diet helps a bit, but going to the Doctor is the big one.

A nation that pays the tab for sickness has a vested interest in prevention. So there is effort to enact proven prevention strategies. That includes plain packaging for tobacco products etc, as well as free health screening such as for bowel and breast cancer. We are the melanoma capital of the world, but we have researchers who have improved its survivability from 5% to 50%.

I have been to the US to visit relatives in California , We had a great time but we did notice people in the US live on less, they have poor healthcare and education for ordinary people compared to us here in Australia. You have a lot more homeless ( we have some but nowhere near as many). In the US the quality of life is not as good. We only work 35 hrs a week, we have 4 weeks annual leave mandated. We have 15 days a year paid sick leave that you can accumulate over the years you work for an employer. You cannot usually get fired that easily unless you do something severe like steel or do something dangerous. Most people have a 2 day weekend every week. Plus we can have one day off a fortnight (RDO - Rostered Day Off) (every second weekend is a long weekend). Plus our weather is warmer all year around. We don't get involved in as many wars - we do support the US normally but only those who volunteer to join the military have to get involved - the rest don't really care except on ANZAC day . Most people could not name a single soldier who died outside a direct family member. We still have some social problems like drugs etc but overall we live good lives and know it! Hope that gives you a snap shot. Come to Australia and find out for your self is my tip.

Fun fact most states have a day to celebrate the foundation of their state or territory e.g. Canberra Day for Australian Capital Territory, Western Australia Day, Proclamation day for south Australia. But the whole of Australia celebrates the foundation of NSW which we called foundation day but it's now called Australia Day. Maybe because we were the first ones created out of everyone.

High Australian exports is a bit misleading, because "all" exports are unprocessed products of mining and agriculture. Coal, Iron Ore, Cattle, raw Wool and Grains. Our high standard of living means we can not economically turn these products into steel, cloth and processed food, let alone cars, refrigerators and TVs. China is our biggest export market, but they are in trouble at the moment. A rocky economic road ahead for Australia.

Hey Ryan, I'm a big fan, just so you know, as of 2024, 96.2% of us Australians have access to the internet, compared with 94.6% of Americans. I am largely aware that times have changed, but just wanted to inform you... We also killed it at the olympics this year, coming fourth, which is pretty crazy for us. Also, we came 10th in happiness this year, with u guys coming 15th, so both Australia and USA improved me fact checking everything lol 🤣 Correction: I accidentally clicked canada, america is the 23rd most happy country, canada is 15th, also, turns out neither country improved happiness, also, we actually got less happy, its just the rest of the world got even more unhappy than us lmao

Rugby is our second most popular sport but has less than half as many fans as Aussie Rules does. Soccer is third, again with less than half the fans as rugby and way less than a quarter of those of Footy. Rugby and Footy fans often have a bit of friendly rivalry between them, whereas Soccer fans tend to stick to themselves over here.

We are fat over here in Australia too but our obesity rates are a bit lower. I think general quality of life, healthcare system, and stress levels probably have a lot to do with the average life expectancy. People living without the internet probably includes a lot of people living in poverty or in traditional ways. Can't say it would be all of them. I'm kinda surprised Aussie Rules beats Rugby League, but I'm not a real sports person and I live in Brisbane. Apparently AFL has over double the spectatorship and average attendance of the NRL. Cricket kinda skews things with the fact that is is more the international games that gets the viewers. The NRL State of Origin and Boxing Day Test (cricket) get more attendees than AFL gets but those are kinda the biggest events for those. Bald Eagles are cool... however the Bald Eagle are not truly eagles though. They are more closely related to Kites than they are to the True Eagles.

NRL State of Origin and Boxing Day Test do not get higher attendances. Boxing Day Test is played at the MCG, which is where the AFL Grand Final is played and it has capacity crowds. So Boxing Day test cannot get larger crowds. State of Origin ia played at stadiums which have smaller seating capacities.

The average attendance for a State of Origin game and the Boxing Day Test is higher than the average attendance at an AFL game. However, the Grand Final for the AFL I'm sure is also sold out at the MCG.

My nephew recently married an American woman who first came here on holiday and decided to move here because a barista makes a living wage 😀 so it was funny to hear you mention that.

Australia has "primary" language, but not an "official" one. the sport is "Aussie rules", the "bald eagle" is a glorified seagul! Passport access is the number of countries your passport will get you into....

Wrong, we are recognised as an English speaking country, naturalized people must be learning English. Only recently has thete been some talked about other languages being accepted, indigenous for example. The issue is which one, as there are region specific languages and no one general language so English is our official language.

@@carolthorson7854 At 3 different places I've lived at least one of the next door neighbours only had a couple of words of English (one had lived here 20yrs, another 20+, don't know about the other (spoke LA Spanish, Greek, Vietnamese). We have extensive interpreter/translator services. At one house most of the flyers delivered weren't in English. And you're right, unlike in NZ, of the Australian languages still surviving, how would they choose?

@@carolthorson7854 by definition "official" means legally recognised. There is no statute that mandates a language in Australia.
