Thanks for watching me, a humble American, react to Sepak Takraw for the first time ever. That was legitimately crazy and I've never seen anything like it.

@@firstname5373 the work " speak" is a Malay word meaning " kicking" Takraw is Thai word for Rattan ball. The old name is Sepak Raga. Raga is a Malay word for Rattan ball. There is an interesting twist in this sport. It was reported in annal history of Malaysia. Way back in 15 th century, a group of young men were playing this sport. One of them was the son of the Prime Minister. A royal entourage was passing through. The Crown Prince was riding his horse in that profession. The son of the Prime Minister kicked the ball and it went straight to the head gear of the Crown Prince He was very upset and killed the son of the Prime Minister. The folks were very upset and went straight to the palace to attack the Sultan. Upon hearing the news, the Prime Minister quickly pacifier th and reminded them it was not the Malay culture to wage war against a Sultan. He however said he would never recognise the Crown Prince as future Sultan. It had far implication as in Malay culture, approval of the Prime Minister was needed to approve ascension to the throne. The Sultan banished his son to the neighbouring state

I'm an English guy living on a small island in Thailand, and you will often see friends playing this on bits of spare land. Thailand is one of the best in the world, and the top level players can deliberately hit the top of the net on a serve so that the ball drops dead on the other side... they can jump up to play a 'smash' but then change and use the sole of their shoe to make a drop shot... amazing! The 'ball' is made from rattan cane or a plastic, and is not 'soft'! Love watching this game!

In Thailand we call it "Takraw" only, Takraw is a Thai word means "muzzle, woven rattan ball, or woven things". And Sepak is a Malay word means "kick". So Sepak Takraw is from Malay+Thai word means "kick woven rattan ball" that is used to call this sport in the present.

Some answers : The floor is hard. There ARE those backflip kicks at the low level, they're a standard attack called a rollspike (Similar to a 540 degree turning kick in Tae Kwon Do). It's not in the Olympics because not enough countries have a team or are willing to take part in it. Your limbs can go over the net so long as you do not touch the net. And yes we are in fact monke.

In this sport, you can use any parts of your body, except your hands. It entails lots of training for a player to do those kind of flip kicks. There is no springboard in the flooring, game usually done in concrete pavement. In the Philippines, the flip kick is better known as cartwheel kick.

It is solid ground no spring. I personally witnessed sepak takraw players here in the Philippines since grade school because my classmate in grade school is an Athlete in sepak takraw. I am so fond of this game because of him and he is also my crush back then. The way they really jump up high surpassing the net is so awesome and somewhat unrealistic if you have not seen it personally but to those of us seen it in person are totally awestruck. Their training is no joke. They have to be flexible like gymnastics players and they have to do a lot of jumping as well but not just jumping as you can see their movements has different stunts as well in midair to kick or block the ball. It was totally awesome. I love this game more than basketball or volleyball although not talented for this game.

Sepak takraw is like a shared cultural sport in the Southeast Asian nations. Even the name is a combination of Malay 'kick' and Thai 'woven rattan thing'. In pure Malay, it is called sepak raga, which just means the same thing. It's so old that I can recall several historical events in the Malay kingdoms involving sepak takraws as far back as the 15th century AD. These guys are professional athletes, so of course their performance is top notch. If you want to play it as a pastime, there's really no need for backflips, heh.

You also use the sole of your foot to either dink or snap, more control but less power. Used to do nothing but stretch an stretch. But I was not great at it. When peeps play, it was always for something, drinks, a little side bet. And everyone gears up by wearing a Bandara to protect foreheads. It’s basically volleyball without hands.

Was a varsity player of sepak takraw back in highschool and practicing everyday with weights on our legs for the first time is very hellish. I remember playing it with my broken synthetic fibre takraw ball and it hurts sometimes my head bleeds. I still got my old takraw ball who gave me a hard time but also gave me strength to play whenever there will be a school competition. Seeing this in my recommendation brings a lot of memories and nostalgia. Nice reaction btw from PH

Most kids around these parts start playing when they're really young man. Start off at age 6-7, and the ones that excel, excel to a ridiculous degree as you've seen. Yeah it's inhuman and awesome. In answer to your questions - 1) The ball is traditionally made of woven rattan/wicker. It's hollow, but lightweight and flexible. In these modern times though light plastic can simulate the same thing. 2) There's no springboard... All those guys are jumping for real. Yeah it's mind-blowing. 3) It IS pretty much volleyball with only your legs.

This is "Sepak Takraw", a sport that is widespread in Southeast Asia. This sport requires a very high level of skill and flexibility. In the early stages of training It might be a little difficult. but after you become more skilled Gradually, your body becomes more flexible. It will motivate you to use more and more difficult moves. physical potential Predatory agility will increase to the maximum. And when you bring everything to the competition Your adrenaline will soar that you can jump that high throughout the race.

Back in 1998 in Davao City National Highschool in the Philippines, this sport is a normal game here, kids usually start learning by playing TAKYAN, its like a badminton shuttle cock but only at the end is a metal bearing or a coin with a hole then the feathers are replaced with celophane strips. You play it by kicking it and bouncing it back the one with the highest bounce count wins and then passed it to the next player via a tap kick. when you are too good for it you move to the ball aka takraw which is that ball with holes, but its actualy dried palm leaves meshed together to form a ball the holes help it shoot fast without air resistance. Regarding the training for sepak takraw the kids in my day used weights on their legs and run laps on the field and bunny hops with weights on, the bicycle kick you seeing on the vid the trademark strike, you train using ropes and do a back tumbling while holding to the ropes while also wearing weights. Helps with the jump height and the recovery after the turn, these athletes are trained since 1st year highschool. Kids before the phones and tablet we play so many community games and one of these is sepak takraw.

Welp I have a teacher who is actually a former national team. He said that those professional has practice since they were young like 7 years old. The highest jump record I believe it was around 4 meter wasn't sure if that was from the ground but it was done by Thailand. I can only sun-back (malaysia kick technique [turn back to the net and high kick]) I can't do a full round backflip kick(which Thai people claim that it was their kick technique). It difficult and very dangerous. My teacher could jump higher than 2 meter which is already stun me. When I was young and play it the rule say that they allow any part of the leg, foot, head, shoulder, elbow. This is actually a very fun sport recommend to try it once if you haven't. Also some small detail> Originally these balls were made from a kind of wood that hit really hard you could get some blood when got hit in the head. But nowadays they use a kind of plastic to duplicate the ball. I wasn't sure about if they still use the original wooden ball in the sport contest 🤔 And yeah the floor isn't a spring board. It is totally a cement. If I do those sun-back kick these day I would say... "MY LEGS!!!" 😂
