A review XPPen’s Deco Pro drawing tablet after two years of use. This is XPPen’s premium graphics tablet and the affordable alternative to Wacom’s Intuos Pro.
The Deco Pro Medium size WITH Bluetooth: shrsl.com/3idgh (affiliate link).
I'd say this drawing tablet is best for serious beginners and digital artists on a budget who still want a premium device. The Deco Pro has all the features you’d need and is really good value for money. And it’s compatible with Android devices which is a nice add-on, but certainly not the main reason you'd buy this.

If you've been using the Deco Pro, let me know what you think of it. Also...that sort of 'bubbling' detection issue seemed to be cause by the MOFT Laptop Riser. I think slight magnetization is what was causing the issue

after watching a couple of videos where authors gave this tablet rave reviews I decided to buy it as my first tablet. But my has one big and annoying problem - when working with tablet + keyboard shortcuts - action which i try to perform after using the shortcut is not recognized by drawing program - photoshop/krita/sai and even some online drawing app which supports B/E shortcuts for changing between the brush/eraser. So the problem is when I push buttons to change the size of the brush / opacity/ change between hand (h) / L lasso / z zoom -/ eraser the first stroke which i try to perform of my attempt to zoom / drag the picture is not recognised. Photoshop doesnt even show this attempt in history. But after i try draw another line - it works fine. If I use tablets buttons - it works fine. Mouse also works fine, but deco pro pen doesnt. Also sometimes when I change between programs using pen instead of mouse - in photoshop my brush starts lagging and drawing straight lines. I should have add some more money and buy used intuos pro, instead of this tablet

Ah, no. I'm sorry you've had that experience with your first tablet. That must be frustrating. It's definitely strange behavior from the tablet though. Are you able to test it on another computer to see if the same issues occur there? Have you also tried uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling it, or maybe try an older driver version?

Hey Animekitteen. So if you are looking to get your first tablet and the Deco Pro is a bit over budget, I’d look at maybe the Deco Mini 7 which is roughly half the price (based on US Amazon prices, non-wireless version). With that one you are still getting the full features in terms of pressure sensitivity, tilt, and express keys.The active area is slightly smaller (7x4”). Just saw the Wacom Intuos Small (wired version) going for $40 instead of it’s usual $80 on Amazon here: amzn.to/3G9AK3i (Affiliate link btw). I prefer having express keys on the side rather that at the top, but so often we’re just using our keyboards anyway for shortcuts that I don’t think it matters all that much.

I'm currently looking to buy a drawing tablet and since I'm unemployed I've been trying to find one that's relatively cheap (without sacrificing quality of course), and I think this video just finalized my decision on getting a Deco Pro! This is an amazing video and it's so helpful that it actually shows what the tablet looks like after using it for a while (most review videos i've seen haven't done that yet), so thank you so so so much!! Quick question: do you have any tips or tricks that could increase the longevity/life-span of the tablet (other than the obvious "don't drop it, be gentle, be careful" kinds of things), such as cleaning care or any specific case/screen protectors you would recommend? Once again, thank you so much for making such an awesome video!

Hey S W. Thank you for that comment, and you're welcome! I'm really glad that you found this review helpful. The long-term use was definitely an important thing for me to focus on, especially when it came to the reviews I did of older Wacom Intuos tablets. The Deco Pro is definitely one I'd consider getting again in the future if I needed to. The Deco 01v2 is a little cheaper, has a slightly bigger working area and has much the same specs minus the wheels and nice design. Often XP-Pen run's sales though, so if you aren't in a hurry, then you might want to wait for the Deco Pro to come down a little from its base price to save yourself a little extra. So one thing I did was adjust my pressure curve in the tablet settings so that I don't have to apply as much pressure to get heavy strokes. I think this helps your pen nibs last a little longer. Light scratches on the surface is totally normal, but if you want to preserve the tablet surface, maybe it's worth getting one of the protective films they sell for the Deco Pro. I only realized they had these after I ordered mine and probably would have ordered one or two just for the added durability, but it isn't all that necessary. I used to store mine in an old laptop sleeve, but XP-Pen does have cases available on their store too that fit the Deco Pro S and M sizes. in terms of cleaning, seldom needed to. I would cover it when not in use, or if I did need to wipe of some dust, I'd use a soft dry cloth or hankerchief.

Hi there. You could try but in your tablet settings, make sure Force Proportions or similar is active so that there is less chance of distortion. The better approach would be to just import the photo into your drawing software, drop the opacity of the layer and with another layer, draw on top of it. If you don’t have photos already on your computer, your phone camera should do the job well enough then you can just transfer over.

Hi Ritesh. I liked Deco 01 V2 because that looks so freaking beautiful and classy, and I liked Deco pro because of the roller wheel. I think that wheel would be great and fast for zoom and brush size. And I have a question about Deco pro's roller wheel. When we roll the wheel to zoom in and out. Does the canvas zoom in and out from the screen's middle, or from the cursor/brush as a middle point?
@EyekooDrawsStuff
@EyekooDrawsStuff 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nishyank. Thanks for the questions. I really like that roller wheel on the Deco Pro, and essentially you are getting two additional functions from it that frees up buttons that you might have assigned to zoom in and out or adjust the brush size. So if the price is not a major deciding factor, I'd go with the Deco Pro. But I think you have the same quality of tech in both devices. In terms of zooming in and out... if I remember correctly, it behaves the same way as in the software you are using. In Photoshop for example, Ctrl+ zooms in toward the central point of your screen and not towards your cursor.

@EyekooDrawsStuff Жыл бұрын
Hey @SmineKiyu, thanks for the question. All it takes is some time and practice. My background is also in traditional drawing and painting, and I struggled at first with the screenless tablet. That's normal. Eventually, it becomes like using a mouse though, and you'll know how the cursor will respond to your hand movements over the tablet. I use a screen tablet too but often prefer to use a screenless one like this. I recommend doing exercises with basic lines and shapes, just to get comfortable with the movement and pressure. When I started with digital, I would also first do my sketch on paper, scan it, and then work on it further in Photoshop. It's quite precise but if your tablet is quite small, then the relative gap between the movement of your pen to your cursor can be quite big, so zooming in can help. But this size of the Deco Pro S was fine for working with my 22inch monitor. Hope this helps and feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

Thanks Borne. Good question. It’s come up a few times. Maybe I should do a short comparison video about it 🙂. Did you happen to check my review of the PTK-651? I think either device will serve you well but I’d say that the Intuos Pro has the edge in terms of customizability with it’s on-screen radial menu. I don’t really use it at the moment because my way of working is pretty simple, but it’s a feature one can grow into later. If you are using multiple monitors, you can program one of the Intuos Pro keys to toggle between them which is nice. I’m not sure if XPPEN has built that into their drivers yet. While the Deco Pro and it’s pen have a bigger range of pressure sensitivity, I didn’t feel like the Intuos Pro and grip pen was lacking at all in terms of pressure sensitivity. The touch feature is also not bad. not as smooth as an iPad of course, but bad. in my case, I switched from the Deco Pro S over to a second-hand (but only lightly used) Intuos Pro M that was much the same price and have been very happy with the decision. Of course, with a new Deco Pro, you’ll have a warranty on your device. Wacom’s screenless graphic’s tablets though are known to be really durable. So if the condition of the Intuos pro is really good, I’d be leaning more towards taking that. Hope this helps a bit with your decision.

Thanks for the review. I mostly use the pen tablet as a mouse replacement, not for art. Currently have a Wacom bamboo CTL-470, that I have liked for many years. Now I'm looking for a larger and modern replacement. How does this tablet hold up for a mouse replacement? E.g. selecting text, menu navigation, dragging etc. Do you recommend it or do you think another product may be more suitable for me?
@EyekooDrawsStuff
@EyekooDrawsStuff Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, Chris. I wonder if the Deco Pro is a bit much for only a mouse replacement (just because of the buttons and scroll wheel not being needed). I can't quite recall how it held up for that doing usual mouse tasks and don't have it anymore to test out. I usually just grab my mouse again for that sort of thing :-) I have two other XPPen graphics tablets in front of me now: a Deco Fun XS and A Deco MW. Navigating menus and hitting scroll bars is no problem, I'm struggling to actually select text though in tablet mode. A quick double tap is fine to grab a word but can't drag it anywhere. Dragging icons in Explorer works a bit differently in tablet mode from what I expected... tap and drag up or down scrolls. Tap and drag to the side first then I can move the icon around. In Mouse mode, selecting text is easy enough either through tap and drag or setting a button to the left click. But I can't seem to drag the text around. Dragging icons in mouse mode is normal as well. Not sure how this behavior sounds in comparison to your Bamboo. Maybe the Intuos Medium is worth looking at for the closest experience but that does have a higher price tag as it's also wireless.

@@EyekooDrawsStuff Thanks for all the information! With "tablet mode" do you mean the mode when it uses the whole "active area" of the pen tablet mapped to the screen? That's the mode I like :) Strange that it is hard to select text in that mode. Are you using Windows? The bamboo I'm using does allow selecting, although I havent used Windows a lot with it and I remember some issues with the settings in the past (Windows Ink related). At the moment I'm using Ubuntu Linux. Often I do some programming so I would like to be able to select text easily using the "tablet mode". Dragging is for me of less importance. The Deco MW does look very nice with the layout. I think I can keep it to the right-side of my keyboard. I like the size as well compared to the small active area on my current bamboo :D (15x9cm / 5.9"x3.5"). I also like the fact that it has the buttons on the left side. Perhaps they are nice to use for actions like right/middle-mouse button/copy/paste, which tends to be hard to do on the bamboo with the pen (with slightly shaky hands).
@EyekooDrawsStuff
@EyekooDrawsStuff Жыл бұрын
No problem. Ah! It was because of Windows Ink that I was struggling to select text in tablet mode (yes, corners of tablet mapped to corners of the screen in that mode). The Deco MW is compatible with Linux but I have no idea about how it performs. It's a nice size though. The edges of the active area are fairly close to the edge of the tablet so your hand can kind of fall off of it when moving to the far right or bottom of your screen. Don't think that's too big of an issue though. And if you need to move text, then yeah, I think having the express keys on the side will come in handy for copy and paste etc. I've done a written review of the Deco MW so far...still have to do the video. drawyourweapon.com/deco-mw-review-xppen/ For a video, I recommend checking out Brad Colbow's review in the meantime: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZryRe5CGubiwZ3U.html. It covers the larger version and is also focused on using it for drawing purposes though.

Ah fellow South African! I'm here in Port Elizabeth for another month and a half or so then relocating abroad. So at the time I bought mine here from xp-pen.co.za, it was just over 2k for the Small. It's slightly cheaper to get direct from them than through Takealot. I see they have the wireless version too on the website now. So in terms of whether or not it's worth the 2.5-3k... Unfortunately, products like this always cost so much more when imported to SA. If we look at the USA price, I think this tablet is such solid value for money. So, relatively speaking, when all tablets are going to cost so much more here, I'll say that yes, it's worth it, but for a grand less, you can get the Deco 01v2, which just doesnt have the spinny wheel but otherwise has much the same specs. Another route to consider are second-hand older Wacom Intuos models like the Intuos 3 and 4. Not sure if you've check out my reviews of those yet, but they are really decent tablets still if they've been looked after. Actually a bit sad to sell the intuos 4 i picked up for the review. Hi there. So I have reviewed the smaller Deco MW on the channel. The pen is different, for sure. The Deco Pro pen is more comfortable to work with, but the one with the Deco L/MW has better initial activation. Then there is also the Deco Pro gen 2 as well, with a different pen from the others. The report rate, resolution, and reading height for these tablets are all the same. Report rate sits at around 200RPS slightly more on wireless models of the Deco M/L.

Hi Jennifer. Thanks for the question. So I'm using a 2013 Intuos Pro M as my main currently (found 2nd hand for about the same price as Deco Pro). For my painting and fairly simple approach to it, I don't really see the need to go with the Intuos Pro over the Deco Pro. I'd rather go with the Deco Pro and spend the rest on a Schoolism subscription or something to level up my skills. The Intuos does offer a little more added customization though with being able to program shortcuts into an on-screen radial menu on top of the wheel and express keys on the tablet itself. But if that level of customizing and convenience is important, I might look at Xencelabs' medium tablet bundle with the quick keys remote, which is fairly close in price.

Lots of Wacom users end up having similar issues with the tablets that the Xp pen users have. They just spent 3x as much money. Deco pro is absolutely excellent value for the price even with the downsides. I’m a video editor so between the hotkeys and the scrolling wheel, I get two peripherals in one. A mouse and a mini controller. AND I get a great mask drawer for After Fx. Perfect for me. Just keep your usb c port clean and if it’s loose use a piece of greeting card or something similar to ensure your cable stays securely wedged and connected. Picked that up from the Wacom users frustrated with the common issue.

I bought the medium version of this tablet and man I can't stand the stylus. The buttons make the topside heavier and it keeps rotating until the buttons are on the bottom. It is constantly causing missed or unwanted button presses along the way and I keep having the correct the position. All that would have been fine if I could swap it out for one of the 15+ passive styli XP-Pen sells but for reasons beyond my understanding only the included pen works with it. It sucks as I otherwise really like the design and workings of the tablet but that pen is quickly becoming a deal breaker for me.

@@EyekooDrawsStuff I've been looking at other reviews and streamers that use the same pen design and they don't seem to have the same issues so it's likely just me being weird. I do use a fairly lose grip to avoid strain, maybe that is the issue. Honestly the thing I'm most frustrated with is not the pen itself but the lack of alternative choice. XP-Pen has a whole bunch of other pens but for some reason their 15+ passive styli don't work with my tablet. Personally I would love to switch to their P06 stylus that looks more like a traditional pencil but for some reason that only works on the Deco 02 and the artist 12 and not the deco pro... Their whole pen thing is just weird, I can't imagine there is much difference between one passive stylus and the other so the limit is probably software enforced.
