This week, we answer a question we receive from Robert: How much preparation do you do for each passage, and do you have assigned roles onboard?
Ahead of our slightly over 100 nautical miles sail between Cascais near Lisbon in Portugal, and Lagos at the Southern tip, we take you through our all our sailing preparations for our coastal passage.
We go through everything from picking our destinations and route, navigation and weather briefing (as well as the navigation and weather tools we use for that), checking the engine, the bilge, the ditch bag, all the way to provisions, food, deck preps, to raising the anchor and hosting the sail!
We did not make this video as a “how to”, but rather as a way to share our process with the community. We are still learning, and will be learning for how long as we sail!

I have just recently found your channel Ryan and Sophie, and I must say you are quickly becoming my favorite of the "sailing" channels. You two have the perfect blend of entertainment and practical education. After two months of being cooped up at home sailing vicariously with you two is one of the few things that is soothing my cabin fever!

I enjoy your videos very much. I think the most important issue you brought up is to know who is the designated captain. As a professional captain, my decisions have always been based on safety of crew first and safety of vessel second. All other criteria are considered after safety issues. I try to defer to the more conservative opinion , but the captain (the person with the most knowledge and experience) must have the Final say on all safety related issues. I also appreciate that Ryan asked Sophie if she was ready before departure: that includes psychologically, physically, and functionally ready. Don’t be concerned that you are not professionals, when it comes to the sea: experience is the best teacher. You obviously have much experience. I don’t want to discount books and knowledge, but there are things that can’t be predicted. The crew that deals with the unpredictable successfully, is the crew that arrives in port safely. So please continue with your excellent videos and sharing your valued experience. Thank you.

I'm about a year and a half behind on watching your videos, but I'm catching up fast. I few USMC attack jets for a career and then I trained pilots for a major US airline for 20 years. I love the thoroughness of your pre-sail preparation; especially your crew briefing. It parallels the thought processes of a good flight deck brief for an airline. Great job and a good example for people without an aviation background that you have.

Ryan ans Sophie --- I like that you both put in and both have jobs that are just as important to a smooth running boat. Ryan it was enjoyable to see your strategy and your sunny disposition. Sophie as always you make me giggle. I commend you both on safety first--aka the ditch bag. A boat carrying red paint crashed into a boat carrying blue paint and the crew were marooned. sincerely sue

Its good you use 2 plotters. Charts don't label everything exactly. Not preaching but I always gave a wide birth to anything. Looking at the Engine when running always a good idea! Leaks, belts etc. As with bilges! Alarms are not bullet proof. You two a smart be safe and have fun! You need Wine in your grab bag and your Life Raft when you repack it!

SAC, haven't heard that in a while. Three small things. That big clear pocket on the inside of the ditch bag often has an inventory list. Makes it just much harder to forget something. (Ryan must be ocd on check lists anyway, occupational hazard), don't forget to check the specific gravity of the coolant, as the raw water gets hotter the cooling capacity decreases and this becomes more important. Last, when you ran the powered winch my ears perked up, maybe it is due for relube?

Nice one guys. You both seem very relaxed in this one. I like how methodical you are in your prep. Definitely better to be over prepared than under. Quick question: Is putting the bimini down just a preference when sailing, or do you have to put it down for some reason?

Good list and, as usual, entertainingly explained. Do you do a rigging inspection? On the maintenance course I did recently we were advised to have the whole crew perform a rig inspection every day, so I'd say it's definitely something to do before making a passage.

Great video guys. 2things: your ditch bag seems too heavy for an emergency (I could be wrong though) and why remove the bimini. Ah, the clean engine bay in a young boat! You might also want to check the transmission fluid. It should not be able to leak out without some visible mess, but still, there is a dipstick to check. The cords always hanging on your stern rail are ? For what? Do you ever routinely check the seacocks?

Just rewatching this episode as we're going on our first longer passage in April. We have the same generation chart plotter that you used to have - only a C80. Have you found a way to import the routes from your laptop or iPad onto the plotter, or did you program them in twice (once on the iPad and once on the plotter)? BTW: Congrats on becoming a Raymarine Ambassador - I'm sure you'll enjoy the new electronics!

Toute façon tous les hommes qui naviguent savent que c'est plus fatiguant la vaisselle (je suis sur qu'au fond Ryan est d'accord :P) . Si ça peut vous aider comme application de fichier grib et quelque autres applications style alarme d'ancre qui chasse etc... sailgrib est pas mal. Oh et merci pour l'astuce de la pompe pour soulever les boiseries.

Have you thought about connecting your flat screen TV to your laptop with a HDMI cable. So you can view the Charts on a bigger screen. One of the safety issues with Navionic charts on digital devices is how far you have to zoom in to see hazards.

The comment about the plotter charts not being as detailed as the app based versions is because you would need to update the card in your plotter regularly to get the latest updates. Off the internet is more easily updated. Putting them up on a big screen is a great idea, and if you link the systems into your mobile devices, you have more flexibility. This should be pretty easy. As some others have said, why stow the bimini all the time, especially when the forecast is for lightish winds. In a previous vid, sophie was talking about sitting under the dodger when at sea. If you keep the bimini up and even put in in fills and sides, you can be almost indoors and with connected devices be really comfortable. These will also provide you with shelter/shade when you are in hotter climates

Nice video. Just a comment, your ditch bag is way too heavy. In an event of having to jump into a liferaft you are likely to drop that bag in the water. You need something which is much lighter. when doing engine check watch for black debris in the bilge under the engine and that usually is a sign of your belt is getting worn out and need changing! This is sort of a weird question, but I've always wondered when watching your videos: when you take your small craft ashore and leave your boat out in the water, do you have to worry about someone coming aboard and taking stuff or even stealing the boat?

Yeah... its always in the back of your mind. I think the biggest risk is having the dinghy or the engine on the dinghy stolen, this has happened to a few people we know. Best thing is to always lock up when you leave and dont leave anything of value on the deck. But insurance is also a good thing. Ryan

In your video, you show scanning the route ahead with your on-line charts and/or chart plotter. I assume that you also zoom in much closer and look for the small islands. There have been several well known cases of highly skilled navigators running onto islands because they did not show up on the chart until zoomed in. Just found your site and binge watching.
