The Northwestern coast of Spain is prone to fog and this week, we head right into it on our way from La Coruña to Islas Cíes.
After a couple of weeks spent away from the oat on a business trip, Ryan is back at the boat and we can finally continue our journey towards the Med.
We day hop in the Spanish Rias and anchor at Ria de Camariñas and Ria de Muros. On both days, the fog catches us by surprise, and we end up spending our passage motoring, spotting for the numerous crab pots and fishing boats that famously navigate the waters of Galicia.
On the first day, the fog had us nervous, but the visibility was still OK. On the second day though, we could only see a couple of boat length in front of us, and the captain was definitely nervous.
The type of fog we encountered and that is common in this area of Spain was called “advection fog”. At the end of the video, Ryan explains what creates it, how it is possible to deal with it and a few lessons learned from our own experience.

Thank you Ryan for your end piece on fog and nav and AIS etc. Great articulation. And thanks Sophie for your part as usual. You 2 are the best. Must be shorts and T shirts soon. You are entering Portugal. Get ready for bikinis and bathers guys. Also that music El Toque de rafa, what a beautiful piece of music. I hate it when people say to me "you must blah blah etc" but if it is on the agenda at some stage and you have the definite opportunity going to a Spanish festival has been one of the best experiences of my lifetime. The national dress, horses, music, food, song and atmosphere was something to behold. Anyway, great adventures ahead whatever guys....xx

Hi Derek! I'd love to find one of those Spanish festivals, and that would definitely be something I'd include in our videos if we find one. You are right, we are in Portugal, and gosh is it beautiful... writing this from our anchorage in Cascais, and loving every minute here. Shorts and T-shirts are ON! Will say though... the Atlantic ocean is really cold, and our bathing episodes are short. Ryan has only dipped his feet in the water :p Thanks again for the comment Derek, see you next week! /Sophie

With you two playing with the air horn and the megaphone it's funny. It reminds me of my wife and I first boat. Like most people we started off on a smaller size but still big enough for a family of four. It was about a 31-ft boat. When we left out of our marina and made our way to the Chesapeake Bay we were in fog as bad as you guys are right now or more appropriate back then. In the state that I live in in America I was not required to have any training before getting behind the wheel of a boat. My wife is younger than me so she was required to take a course. Since our oldest son wasn't too far off from getting his car license we helped him get his boat certification. Believe it or not a 14-year-old as long as they have the proper card from DNR they can take a boat out by theirselves. But during the course I'd learned what you were supposed to do if you were in extremely heavy fog and could not get somewhere safe or stay somewhere until the fog lifted. So that day that we ran into the fog I know that I was supposed to blow the horn every 5 to 10 minutes. When I pushed that horn button I guarantee you not a single person heard that horn. My wife and kids could not even hear the horn. I didn't know what to do. Now it's getting even worse as we were heading down towards Annapolis. My son remembered that during the course they told us that you could use a foghorn a whistle or even a bell. my son remembered on his life jacket there's a whistle was on it. So he went up on the bow with his brother and our youngest son held the watch and his brother every 5 minutes would start blowing that whistle. I have to say it was a scary day and one of the best days we ever spent on that boat. Even after all those years I am still smiling as I'm writing this out. I thought for sure that the horn must have been broken. So after that weekend I ordered a replacement horn. That one was no louder than the one I took off. So I had to make a choice to buy my son a better whistle and buy our youngest his own watch or just switch over to air horns. While we were waiting for the whole system to come in I picked up one like you guys have there. This one came with a pump so you could refill it. The boat we have today is a 30-m ocean Alexandria with a sky lounge AKA man cave. I have every known system in the world on that boat so no sort of weather short of a hurricane will stop us from going out. Around here when we are home the Chesapeake really gets foggy during the period between fall and winter. Just like this past weekend at our home I could not even see the gates. I think you guys handled yourselves pretty darn good. A very first thing you do is to never panic and if you are panicked don't let anyone know you have to stay confident for that person. Look forward to watching more of your videos and follow your adventures.

Excellent video all the way around. What a great team you two are. I'm sure you've fixed your plotter by now; but, when I was younger and sat for a radar endorsement, I had to do all plots by hand with a grease pencil on the screen. Just as good. Used a Popsicle stick for a scale. It's always good to know the Old Methods when all the new shit breaks down.

I enjoy the fog when I have the use of a reliable plotter with updated charts, a working radar or two, a working AIS, a working VHF radio, a working fog horn, and a well rested alert crew who assist in both navigation and collision avoidance. Without any of these tools, I don’t enjoy the fog as much. A little bit of fear can help you stay alert

My only suggestion for dealing with fog other than what you already have is: to increase your visibility to other vessels you could deploy a radar reflector as close to the masthead as you can get it - the higher up the mast it is the further away can other vessels see you. Other than that I can only recommend that you get your radar working asap. Also I would strongly suggest that you add a transponder to your AIS. As a general rule regarding the wonderful technology available to us today I'm in favour of buying it all! True, the old sea mariners didn't have any of our aids but we can't forget their record of shipwrecks! I'm pretty sure that if I could ask a ship's captain of the era what would be the first thing he would like to put on his shopping list a fully functional AIS would be on it somewhere below the GPS! That's all from me for now! Bon voyage!

Another magnifique vid. Great work. Merci. The "dirty secret" of most cruising monohulls is: you will honestly be motoring close to 50% of the time transiting (excluding very long ocean passages - and this, usually only because of fuel capacity issues). This is often why you see older sailors transition to motor sailors or even trawlers. Once you've been offshore a few times... it seems it's all about just getting the hell there!

True, we do motor a lot more than we wish we did. Since we got our new genoa though, Polar Seal sails like a beast and we really enjoy longer and more efficient sails! I wish our engine was a little quieter though, it gets so loud in the cabin when we're using the engine.... /Sophie

Someone may have already said something but the best predictor of fog is temperature vs dew point. Pretty much in sailing enviorns, if dew point and temperature are the same or very close you will have fog. I worked on radar years ago and used this to plan time off. If temp and dew point were predicted to be close I stayed close to my radar spares. Also nice to see Ryan smile. Looks like the weightof the world is on his shoulders. Hi guys, great video. Your both learning so much and looking more and more comfortable with every VLOG. More of a statement than a question, think about this. Your boat is your home right? and we constantly improve our homes to improve our quality of life. Invest in things that make you comfortable and safe, RADAR would have been a godsend in that fog and made it more comfortable for you. Glad you have AIS but it only goes so far, you both work in tech right? well tech breaks down, redundancy is the key. cruising guides only go so far, get charts and a sextant and learn to use them, its a fun project and may save you one day (it did us after the lightning strike fried ALL of our tech) Stay safe, keep learning and most of all, HAVE FUN.

Hi Matt! Yep, you're right, we are constantly improving this floating home of ours :) The radar thing isn't as obvious as it sounds... It would involve sending our chart plotter (which is the source of the problem, not the actual radar) to Raymarine in the UK. From there on, we don't know how much time it will take Raymarine (but no less than 3-4 weeks we've heard from the marine electronic guy who helped us), or even how much it would cost (RayMarine won't let you know the cost of the repair before they get the unit) We are looking at buying a second hand e80 chart plotter on Ebay to replace the unit and decrease the time it would arrive, but we're even struggling to find a seller that would ship it to us in Portugal. We can't even upgrade the chart plotter, cause any model more recent than the e80 would end up being incompatible with our radar. So frustrating.... I really want our radar back. we ended up in the fog again between Porto and Lisbon again, and that's just unnecessarily nerve-wrecking. We're working hard at solving the problem... We do carry a sextant onboard, charts in both or phone, paper charts and pilot books. The captain is a former fighter pilot and doesn't take any risks that aren't calculated! Thanks for the nice comment Matt, nice to have you here :) Cheers from Lisbon! /Sophie

AIS is good but only when others use it. You would be surprised. A radar reflector is good too so you stand out. $30 and fits on a shroud. International rule 33 is (a) A power-driven vessel making way through the water shall sound at intervals of not more than 2 minutes one prolonged blast. The horn is used for visibility distance less then the horn you are using. Suggest a 12v trumpet horn stainless steel $35 plus ear plugs for sleeping watch, horn button and wiring.

I'm a sea kayaker, usually solo. I've got excellent spatial sense, know the swell patterns off Southern California, (usually I can spot them in Hollywood movies), and if I took out my ear buds, two miles off the coast I can hear the waves breaking on shore. I love going out in the fog. With all my ability, experience, smarts.... in the fog I will turn 90 degrees in less than a minute. And when I turn to starboard say three times in a row; and I try to go a little port to correct? Never ever works out. I can 'read' the swell as I think I'm keeping my heading, my GPS records loop de loops. It's humbling. (I still love fog.) In aviation, 'flying by the seat of your pants,' will get you killed faster than just about anything else. I don't think I'm taking much risk at 3.5 knots alone a mile or two off the coast. No one else goes out if visibility is less than 100 meters. But I don't think I'd try sailing around Los Angeles in a larger faster boat in the fog. So I just keep checking my compass in my lap (I used to have a deck compass but I was always annoyed by the backwardness) so for the last ten years I carry a Silva or Brunton hand compass (Like for hiking), and I use GPS on my iPhone. And if somehow my phone and my compass stopped working, I'd take out my ear buds and paddle towards the sound of the surf.

This is a general comment.....I am at a loss to understand why, after spending many thousands on a beautiful yacht, one chooses NOT to spend a few hundred on a real horn. Or fix the radar before leaving. Or install an AIS receiver and not a transmitter. As a former US Coast Guardsman, I have seen the results of these "economies." As for ships making passages at sea for hundreds of years before electronics, they were SLOWER and definitely SMALLER than the freighters (container ships)of today. P.S. I still love your channel and Sophie's wonderful sense of humor. the Old Coastie.

@RyanSophieSailing 5 жыл бұрын
Hi dear Old Coastie! Always loving your feedback :) Aaah, there are so many things that we spent a few hundreds on, most of them we hope we never have to use ;) I'll be very honest here, I didn't understand why people had big hailers mounted on their masts. Now I do, and I want one. The radar thing is more complicated. You are not the first one to comment on it, I will say ;) Having the radar repaired would involve sending our chart plotter (which is the source of the problem, not the actual radar) to Raymarine in the UK. You depicted very well the heightened awareness necessary for the fog conditions. I agree with some of the other posters, give yourself a break and increase your situational awareness and presence - radar, radar reflector and AIS transceiver (probably in that order of priority). Its certainly quite different to how I imagined the Spanish Atlantic coast would be in the summer! Bring on the warmer days!

Hi M Nardo! Yes, for convection fog that will work, also with no wind. However this was a different type of fog. We had a good amount of wind while we were out there. Very strange. Ryan

Didnt envy you in the fog, The idea of being able to work for a couple of weeks, then come back to the boat for a few weeks etc. really interests me, was it very expensive to stay in that marina for a couple of weeks?

Yes, that is definitely a budget... There are pros and cons to working while sailing, one of the cons is that our progress is a lot slower, due to the need to 1: work, and 2: travel for work :) We are definitely not on an extended holiday :p /Sophie

Question stupide mais pourquoi ne pas attendre que le vent se lève pour partir? Avez-vous des délais pour certaines traversées? Est-ce que le moteur ne coute pas trop cher? En tout cas bon vent! 🤚
@RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 5 жыл бұрын

Still doing engine and bilge checks? Don't rely totally on alarms! Add a reflector on your halyard! If a tall ship is out there they can't see you being tall! Fix your Radar. They also alert you to squalls! No offense but for hundreds of years they didn't have monstrous freighters.

@RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael d and Mick Meteor! We do have a big radar reflector on the mast. We are obviously working really hard at fixing the radar, it's just not as straightforward as it sounds. It is just frustrating.... I really want our radar back, it would make my nerves a lot better than they are right now :) /Sophie

Couldnt watch with that horrible guitar music. When will foreigners learn that Guitar isnt synonyim with Spain or Spanish, it's just southern spanish music (specifically Andalucia region) most of spain, and specially the north do NOT use this music at all. It's such a lack of respect.
