Bud 100% gotta be gone after that debacle. The whole team wasn't good enough but the coach hasn't really been good even though they overcame and won the chip a few years ago. Giannis wasn't good enough in this series and especially at the end of the game and he did NOT want that ball. I really like this outcome though cause this Heat vs Knicks series should be insanely fun.

They had in bought games a double digit advance in the 4th quarter, and they couldn’t close the game. One of the main reasons, is a lack of a leading coaching staff that try to influence the game from the outside. No adjustments, lack of feeling when to make a timeout to stop a run… he is ok, but not flexible engulf to cary them for more..

No, Jimmy got lucky. He had 3 games without Giannis where he was able to quietly do his thing. He had opponents with virtually no coach. Giannis returned a shell of himself-- yes he was productive, but was unable to be successful at scoring in transition and employing physicality to get to the rim, the back injury is more impactful than you'd think... The defensive assignment was never adjusted despite jrues struggles. It was all around attributed to bad coaching.
@ricardotejeda6530

There are a lot of things... After a down year, Bam finally remembered, "Oh, I'm actually the best defender in the league," and showed everyone in the 4th against Giannis. Resting Jimmy on back-to-backs and playing him minimum minutes in 4th quarters during the year has paid off in him being fresh, relatively, of course. Role players played their roles. All last season, they had the best 3pt shooting team and the best bench because of Herro. That came back, finally, and it started to happen in March and when Lowry went to the bench. You play an astronomical amount of clutch games during the season, and you start not fearing the big moments and you can be far more composed in the half-court at the end of games. And this is something that repeated itself from last year, and that is Spo is better than everyone in the East at coaching. I was reminded of Jimmy after a press conference last year during the Philly series when he said "if Doc wants to keep sending one defender at me, I'm going to keep scoring," or something to that effect. That inbounds play to send it to OT was the same thing playing out. He told Spo exactly what Jrue Holiday would do and that it would lead to a good look, and Spo believed him. Why did he know this? Because these coaches are predictable and believe in their own game plans to a detrimental point. Now, I am saying this only as a fan and a student of the game from my effing computer, but if I can remember that press conference from last year, I'd hope Coach Bud would as well.

It is not the point guard fault. The problem is today's offense. Today's offense has no place for a post up offensive player. Half court usually needs a post up player to run a good play in the last 2 minutes. Giannis and Embid are marginal post up players compared to Shaq and the Dream It is not only the Bucks it is almost every team. Give it to one guy and let him go one on one is not offense. Just something that I noticed as a big time Bucks fan: Multiple times throughout this series the look of the players was just off. I seen 3 separate times Bud talking to each of their big 3 and the players looking like they were straight up not listening or not caring about what he was saying. I think it will come out later that there was some type of animosity or fault in chemistry in the locker room involving the coaching. I've seen these same guys look so composed in clutch time moments and yet they looked completely terrified BEING UP 15 IN THE 4TH QUATER. They have got a lot of soul searching to do because this still doesnt even make sense how they got out coached so badly.

It used to be pretty much every team had that guy but it's kind of a rare skill now. It’s at least partly the difference in officiating, IMO. Players who have to make contact in order to play effectively, like Jimmy Butler and Mitchel Robinson, have to play more cautiously or not at all in the regular season, but are permitted to go all out in the playoffs. There’s a lot of defense and rebounding you can’t do in the regular season anymore because the officiating is so in favor of the ball carrier and so soft for everybody else. The more the officiating promotes scoring in the regular season, the more different the playoffs will be where the officials are under more pressure to not make calls on incidental contact. It’s not like the officials didn’t try to punish Miami’s physicality by throwing the game to Milwaukee it’s just Milwaukee couldn’t make the foul shots. And the officials at home at MSG were not going to call stuff in a way that protects Donovan Mitchell’s manufactured “greatness” as yet another volume scorer.
@michaelahurt
@michaelahurt Жыл бұрын
Jimmy's FT rate was 50% lower than during the regular season (0.625 vs .403) so idk that you can say he was less physical during the regular season. He is more aggressive looking for his offense and always shoots better during the playoffs. Mitchell's eFG% was three points above league average. That's not empty volume scoring. There was nothing manufactured. During the regular season he made shots. In the playoffs in 2020 and 2021 he made shots. Those things happened. This isn't a 2022 Devin Booker situation where he made first team on league average efficiency because of a narrative. Mitchell was legitimately good. He just didn't shoot well and wasn't aggressive getting to the line when his shot was off. (Unlike Brunson.) Maybe some of that was officiating but mostly he played like ass those last three games. But you are correct to point out that aggression and physicality is rewarded more in April and May than October - March. NY and Miami just physically kicked the Cavs and Bucks ass. They outcompeted them. And you really can't play at that intensity for 82 games.

I never thought in my wildest dreams that Giannis will lose confidence on the court 😳! Shows that he has some growing up to do. Hopefully he develops a solid mid jumper , reliable hook shots for his size(go to moves he already used before) and an acceptable 75% free-throws percentage

MB should have been fired years ago. i think Lue is overrated but there are many good assistants who could invigorate this team ( and other teams) . It is time to get rid of many of the old guard ( Kidd, Lue, Rivers, Carlisle etc). There are some exceptions ( example- Pop seems to still have the ability and willingness to develop young players) . one of the best things to occur this year was that a deseving Jacques Vaughan finally got his chance to be HC.

It is what it is. A collapsing season with poor preparation and mindset or the overlooking opponent, which would be a big lesson for the Bucks that even though you are the favorite, you need two healthy stars to get you through finals and it could happen when you are unprepared, where is your hunger!! Try again next year.

Bad coaching, lack of athleticism, and age caught up to the Bucks. The Celtics exposed them last season. The big problem though appears to be Giannis actually played scared at the end of game 5. The Freak for the first time in his career seemed afraid to get fouled at the end of a game.

Crazy that the narrative can change about a whole organization in 1 week.. Giannis had 38/20, Lopez had another big game, Holiday had over 20, Middleton had 33 i think, imo Miami's bench was the difference in this series, of course Jimmy going MJ was huge but low key the bench was huge for Miami all series, and lost Herro and Dipo

What are the available defensive minded but offensively competent replacements for Bud? The pick of coaches with a head coaching track record is rather slim this offseason. You can't really go with someone with no head coaching resume at this point in Giannis' career. Jackson, McMillan, Gentry, Vogel? Mike Brown would have been a good fit in hindsight.

In regard to whether or not the Bucks season is a failure. I think if the team failed to compete - If they weren't in a position to win games in the series - If they're getting blown out and you can see they just aren't bringing anything - That feels like a failure. But to see players and coaches complete - but then make mistakes, I would hesitate to define that as a failure. I don't think people (players, coaches, teams) are the sum of a preset mathematical equation. And anytime you try to measure or evaluate people with that kind of precision, you're not going to get the results you're looking for. And that feels like a failure in terms of the critic's analysis, not the team's execution. I know the NBA teams and players have to be held to the highest standard, but it's a shame the NBA experience leaves so little room for players to be human. Which is all that happen every year in the playoffs. Some teams can only be "human." The winning teams find a way to be super human. This time, the Bucks were human. Jimmy Butler was super human. I don't think it's much more complicated than that. Respect the Bucks for competing. Worship Jimmy for taking his game to the highest level.

The only thing I can't explain is that last year the Miami Heat that was one shot from the finals again and was the best 3pt shooting team now one year later, same team can't shoot this year. Same personnel all of the sudden they can't hit a damn shot.
@gators9570

When people said they saw the heat fall off coming this year I just assumed they didn’t watch the team. Defense was still serviceable to even great, injuries hit a little, the stars still played well, rebounding was meh but that’s always been the case. It was completely inexplicable how the whole supporting cast slumped from the best 3 point shooting unit to the worst shooting unit just over one season. Obviously Duncan got his chance and nailed it this series but overall everyone somehow snapped back to shooting well outside of Bam. It’s not really a surprise that Miami is dangerous if their shooters remember how to shoot

Bud dont make adjustments but Greek with a 26 point triple double game 4 and then a 38 and 20 game 5 even tho he was 10/23 from the free throw line he still made 10 that's a lot of makes can't blame him they play bad team defense all series. When they beat MIA 4-0 people don't talk about Greek guarded Butler every game this series and the other they lost he never guarded him Blame Bud

My heat just matchup really well with the bucks the last few years beside the sweep even tho most them games were close. Having drew holiday who is an amazing defender on jimmy was not good cuz of size. And running they offense thru Giannis in the 4th qt was also a mistake, its easy to double him and recover when he attacks from the top of the key. They should run they offense thru holiday or post up brook lopez. Heat buckeld down on defense in the 4th and ot give us our flowers, See u in the ecf vs winner of 76ers/ celtics lol

Imo there are many reasons, but the biggest culprit is the Bucks lack of attention to details, from set plays (lack of) to time outs (not calling), and (lack of) adjustments. Yes, most of the time, against most teams...the Bucks talent and depth win most games. That said, Jimmy Butler and Miami's high variance when the tres are going in, the heat is one amazing team! So...in conclusion, yea...it's the biggest upset in history, and it took both Heat being better than amazing, and the Bucks blowing its depth and Giannis being injured and missing like 50+% of his freethrows, and Middleton and Holidays *both being subpar in the series. Lastly, and the Heat still took the last 2 to 3 mins and OT to comeback to win game 4 and 5, right? If you have been watching the Heat games, or that playin against the hawks...they are anemic like 60% of the time, if the tres aren't falling and/or Jimmy wasn't playin' amazing.

two reasons: a) Gianis' injury, and b) Jimmy Butler its not as if the games were not a battle. It was close and that is what it is. This also shows the genius of coach Spo as well as the Heat culture. They have a great team maximizing whatever they have. It would have been different had Gianis been healthy. Shows how much the Bucks relies too much on him.

Honest Pride >>> Fake Shame. I felt that, Giannis was upset about how his season turned out. He clearly wasn't in a good spot mentally but you can tell he accepted the reality of not living up to the season's expectations. You could also feel the fire of a competitor coming out while he was speaking, he'll be back next season even better. Plenty people will disagree and say that the season was a failure because they clearly failed to achieve their aspirations but at the same time he's in the prime of his career so he'll continue to compete like a high level competitor would so he doesn't see it as a failure. Also, the combo guard has definitely killed off the true PGs of the league because the best PGs are often more scoring guards than they are facilitating guards. Steph is a shooter, Luka is scorer, Trae is a scorer/shooter, Garland is a shooter, Fox is a scorer, Brunson is closer to a true PG and you'd probably put Dame and Harden at the top of the list because they have more responsibilities as facilitators than anyone else on the list. But then you have to consider that we're also in the era of Point Centers (Jokic, Sabonis, Sengun) and Point Forwards (Draymond, Luka, Lebron). So the PG position isn't always tasked with facilitating.

As a fan who saw him in Atlanta, Bud just isn't a Playoff Coach. Great developmental coach, but he can't roll with the punches, or create surprises. On top of that, Giannis hasn't had a reliable 2nd star. Jrue and Khris are great players, but not a guaranteed bucket. Been wondering for years what that trade of Khris for Jimmy would have looked like.

It might be as simple as Bud seeing Butler's 56-point masterpiece, reasoning that it was a fluke, and refuse to gameplan around him doing it again. The fact that they NEVER double-teamed him the entire series is a testament to how rigid his approach to each game is.

I'd rather have Butler than Giannis on my team without a doubt. Hard to win when your best player can't hit his free throws at an acceptable rate and struggles to make any shot outside the painted area. This isn't early 2000s NBA no more, every player has to be able to shoot the jumper when he is open and Giannis which has great strength and athleticism is limited and teams can scheme against him to minimize his impact

Strongly disagree with Ryen on that last point - I prefer honest pride. Fake shame is pablum, it's pointless, it's in one ear and out the other.
