Most people don't notice the lyrics change from "We are all friends" to "We were all friends" in the last buildup to the chorus, because the fighting resumed after.

Lead singer Joakim Broden rolls his 'R's to help with English pronunciations, as Swedish is his native tongue. The first soldier out of the trenches is drummer Hannes Van Dahl ( Floor's husband) They went back to shooting , but a lot of units had to get rotated to different areas because they wouldn't shoot at their new friends or intentionally shot high. The officers and higher ups were pissed. In future years they threatened the troops with punishment if it ever happened again, including execution. The video is so good because it was made by people that usually make movies, but had time for this when the world shut down, as no movies were being made. For more info on the stories, everey song has an episode on the Sabaton History channel. Merry Christmas, Kyle and Eric.

i'd like to correct a few things: A: they weren't soldiers for the most part. just the average conscripted joe B: many fronts refused to resume combat after it happened, which is why it later became forbidden to have a truce on christmas. turns out it's a lot easier to shoot "the enemy" when "the enemy" doesn't have a human face
@andrewames247

And as a matter of note; weren't the ones who took part in the first Truce shipped off to other fronts almost immediately afterwards?
@Arcalargo
@Arcalargo 11 ай бұрын
@@andrewames247 Yes. By the time Christmas 1915 rolled around, opinion amongst the Entente had been so soured that any attempts were immediately shot. The actual "truce" had different lengths depending on where it was. Some later a couple of days, others a week or so.

Similar story with the ANZAC soldiers and the Turkish soldiers in Gallipoli. They played cricket together... apparently they used to throw each other apples. There's one story where I believe they played cricket ect one day and the next day when they were fighting a Turkish soldier found a founded Australian that he recognized...they took him back and treated him then let him go back to the other side. Saddest part about war, none of them want to be there, they could all be friends in different circumstances. Amazing song

There are many jokes about how that ending with Floor came to be, but in reality, it is part of the symphonic edition of the album, they named it The Symphony to End All Wars. Floor also featured on the soundtrack edition of their previous album, The Great War (there she is actually singing The Future of Warfare). Great reaction to this amazing song

Glad you both liked it! Sabaton is wonderful on so many levels! And it's amazing that it's war history - that gets people to learn about these things that may not have otherwise! Floor Jansen is married to Sabaton's drummer - Hannes Van Dahl. He is the blonde guy that climbed out of the trenches w his hat raised - the guy at the beginning that was shell shocked from the grenade blast. That's him. They have a daughter, Freya. Yes, her vocalizing over the end credits is amazing! Thanks for listening to a part of it! Merry Christmas guys! And tell Mom, Meg, Devon, and everyone Merry Christmas!!!! Hope yall have a great day tomorrow! Sending love, blessings, and peace from Alabama! G-d bless you and everyone here! *Nightwish Army, Alabama division, present and accounted for🤘🏻😁🎄

Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful piece of art with everyone. Sabaton is an amazing band and they put on an incredible live show. Saw them back in October with Epica and that was incredible. The whole venue was singing at the top of the lungs the chorus where the instruments drop away. In this song they have perfectly captured not only the actual event but also the sense of brotherhood that I and all that have served feel for each other. As a veteran a totally connect to this song emotionally and if my eyes aren't leaking by the end then when Floor's soaring vocals come in I definitely loose it. Again thanks for sharing and for all those on watch around the world protecting us from evil know that you are in our hearts and thoughts.

So thing is You said on the 26th the said "Freeze MFr." This event was not an isolated thing. This happened spontaneously across MILES of trench line. Pockets of battalions playing soccer. Multiple Soccer games simultaneously. Drinks, chocolate, cigarettes, figgy pudding, fruitcakes, and more were exchanged. In some places the ceasefire lasted weeks. In others it lasted for only 12 hours. And you were right once high command heard about the unauthorized ceasefire they ordered the troops to different sectors scrambling the front lines to ensure they wouldn't hesitate to shoot the next day. It started with Christmas carols. Music binds us all.

I was hoping yall would react to some Sabaton. Fantastic metal band. All of their stuff is awesome, but it's hard to beat the Art of War album. I hope yall do more. I've always loved how much they respect the individual soldiers, etc., divorcing them from the regimes they have have been forced to serve (which is not to say they would ever glorify someone who was evil just because they Did impresive feats. Everyone they highlight is deserving.)Just raw appreciation for the warrior spirit needed in conflict. They have some powerful song out there-- Price of a Mile, The Final Solution, and Uprising--to name a few.

There are a couple of other songs in the States that are similar to this one: 1) Belleau Wood by Garth Brooks 2) Snoopy and the Red Baron (based on the comic book series by Charles Schultz) Both songs are excellent Christmas songs, as this one is. It is a lesson of history we should never forget, that even in the darkest of times, whether in the air (see: No Bullets Fly by Sabaton), or in the trenches, that as long as even one person holds onto hope, then the darkness can never overtake the light. That even in the most hellish of warzones, all it takes is one soldier to put down his rifle on Christmas and say, "Today....today is Christmas. Today I am not fighting. Today, shall be a day of peace." Lest we forget. And to all those who read this, no matter where you are or what you believe, I very joyfully wish you and your family a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! Cheers from America! Edit: What you were hearing as the cross was erected was the heavy machine gun fire and artillery across other parts of the line. And speaking of the cross: It still stands, more than 100 years later, outside of the town of Ypres, Belgium. And as for the officers, they were the ones to put a stop to any semblence of a truce after 1915. And as one account goes, after the Truce, a German commander had to move his unit to another place in the line, after his men refused to fire upon the men they had made friends with the day before.

There had to be a lot of too-high / wasted-ammunition shot across lines after this. Something similar was tried by either the Germans or the Russians (don't remember which) on the Eastern front too, but it ended badly. Turns out the two sides didn't celebrate on the same day. So, one side didn't get what was going on, and well... )-: The Sabaton History episode for Christmas Truce is especially good, BTW.

I went down late in the day on the 24th, struck in the engine I could not press on. My crate nosed over into shell hole, I came to much later. I could do nothing but hide, the madness of no-mans land reigns terror on those caught in it. Darkness fell, and an eternity lay before me as I plotted my way out. But something happened that night, a soul deafening silence fell upon the front, followed soon by a single voice in song. Not believing what I was hearing, I peered over the mangled wings covering my hole. I saw a single man, standing above the trenches, hands behind his back, singing as though his humanity depended on it. It filled me with a chill the night and snow could not give. Then more of his comrades stood to join him, and they walked onward, slowly and un-armed. I heard a heavy Scottish voice say; "Are ye a'right lad?". A highlander with his pipes was standing aside my hole, his hand extended. Without a thought, I responded: "Shaken, but not dead." "It's Christmas, Lad. C'mon." I stood, and took his hand for help from the hole. Around me I saw what could be described as a wonderous occasion. Men of all sides stood in the desolation, talking in what tongues they knew as though there was no war. There was no hate, no blood, no malice, only cordial respect and humanity. I wondered then, what we were fighting these men for. It struck me then, that each of us had a job to do, but tonight we all refused to do that job and simply be human. The voices rose again in song, and the piper played as we walked to the gathering. I couldn't help but feel that there was hope for us afterall, that we are all the same, no matter our uniforms, our rifles, or our futures. Tonight is Christmas, tonight we sing. -Manfred von Schreiber.

One thing that a lot of people don't mention is how much this was a miracle. There were plenty of places on the line where things didn't go so well. Those who came out with their hands held up in peace were gunned down, where goodwill had grenades thrown in response, or both sides just went "not risking this". There was really only a very, *very* small part Despite that though, there were places where this happened. Where people realized those across No Man's Land were _also_ people. As someone else mentioned, those who participated in this weren't able to actually go "Freeze, motherfucker!". They shot high on purpose if they shot at all. The reason why this never really happened again is because of two main reasons IIRC. The first one is that command did everything in their power to stop it from happening again. Realizing that those who you are trying your damnedest to kill are also people is a _rough_ thing to deal with, and command knew that. Orders to never do something like this again with harsh punishments were put in, artillery barrages were planned specificially so that meeting in No Man's Land and organizing was near impossible. The second reason is that after that first holiday season, the war got *ugly*, even more so then most other wars. Chemical warfare started to kick off, command on both side started to get desperate to end the war quickly so risky and bloody offensives were executed, and soldiers started to lose their brothers at a horrible rate. There were even less people who were even considering doing this to begin with, because who wants to call a truce with a side that called in mustard gas? Who are the reason why you had to hear the comedian of your unit crying out for his mother in No Man's Land for days while he died?

Concerning Carol of the Bells. He plays it in the inverse in the intro. The composition was written by a Ukrainian composer in... January, 1914. He plays it inverted to show that, between the winter before, when Carol of the Bells was released, that the world had been turned upside down. He mentions this in an interview. Many people don't realize that these men spent 4 years yelling at each other within earshot. In many places the trenches were as close as a few meters. All along the Western front there were versions of the truce. Admittedly when the Germans tried initiating a Christmas truce with the Canadian lines the Canadians simply shot them. Not everyone was game.

no Eric you're wrong, most soldiers after this refused to fight the men they just became friends with. Command rotated them off the trenches or to different trenches to get them to go up against nameless enemies again. That's the reason it never happened again, because both commands knew the same thing would happen so on future christmasses they shelled the enemy line nonstop, the cost for artillery would be less then the cost to move troops around again

Just promised myself to no longer put myself last, to be me without fault. I'm about to make a few people sorry they could not handle my truth. It's going to be lonely but I'm convinced with some time it will be worth it. Also I hope I can grab enough strength, I'm preparing and looking forward, hopeful will be able to get pictures of some ungrateful and hurtful humans that have zero faith in me. Thank you. So annoying with your logo over the video!!! That’s against the copyright law! You are not allowed to change an artistic creation, in Sweden at least. Do better next time please 😡

This is the true story of the miracle that was the Christmas Truce, where British and German soldiers came together in no man's land and celebrated Christmas together. A game of Football was played between some British troops and German troops, a British soldier who was a barber before WW1 set up shop and cut hair from both British and German soldiers. Soldiers of both sides shared food and drink plus gave gifts to each other. Where I come from in England we had our very own Regiment during WW1 and a company of our Troops was involved in the Christmas Truce. The ball for the Football match between British and German troops came from a British Regiment that still exists today, The London Irish Regiment and the actual ball used in the Christmas Truce of 1914 is in the Regiment's museum. Here in the UK the Christmas Truce is part of our history and is remembered, that is why England vs Germany Football matches are always very meaningful to us as it reminds both us and our German friends that WW1 should never have happened and that the common man from both countries are not enemies but friends.
