DO NOT BUY!
After only mowing twice with the battery powered zero turn ryobi zt480ex mower, I knew I was going to have to do something about the turf tires. They just aren't made for rural lawns or hillsides, which I have both. It made the mower pretty dangerous doing slalom turns at the bottom of the hills (that is where you turn the mower and the rear end breaks traction and then just slides sideways so you have to use steering to compensate for the shift in weight and direction).
So I ordered new tires from amazon, the url to be exact: amzn.to/3NFAPOU and I must mention that these are NOT ATV flotation type tires. These are a heavy sidewall and load rated tire suitable for a mower that has 400+ lbs of batteries in the back of it.
This video really starts out with me telling you about the problem with the turf tires spinning everywhere, taering out spots all over my yard. Its not the mowers fault, its just the tires are not made for this type of lawn. They are made for those highly groomed city-folk yards that are flat as can be and never get walked on. Then I move on to showing you how to remove the wheels from the mower, remove the tires from the wheels, install the new tires, add air, reinstall the wheels. Then we go for a test drive and try to get the mower to spin out, or the tires to break traction in several problem areas of my yard.
I have been super happy with how much the tires imrproved this mower in my rural kentucky home.

I like that you're showing how awkward and difficult it is. Some videos make it all look so easy, when ya gotta put some muscle in it seems like you're doing it wrong. This is complete honesty.

Thank you! Its sad that it is exactly the way you said it is for a lot of things on youtube. IDK how many times I have seen videos of people homesteading making it out like its rainbows, flowers, and butterflies all the time. That gives a false sense of the challenges homesteaders face every day and then people who perceive everything to be easy all the time quickly get reality delivered to them when they start. Its because of that, I keep everything honest because I don't ever want to feel like I have to mislead people for likes and clicks.

Yup, that's the way I do it. Brute strength and awkwardness. LOL. Got 2 of those coming in a few days too.

Very nice work on some great tires. I’m all about battery powered stuff but I don’t think you’re place is quite ready for that yet. Just my opinion though.

@@sharpridgehomestead What broke? I bought the same model used early spring and it's done a great job. Even installed a pvc canopy with 3 100W flex solar panels and a Victron mppt charge controller. Now when I mow the batteries charge while pushing this runabout. Fantastic machine so far.

@@arminius301 So, I had several things go wrong with this. I probably should do an updated video. The first thing, I live in a very rural / country area and the ground is kind of rough, its not like a manicured smoothed lawn like you would find in a city. The blades are made very thin, I'm certain its to reduce the force when the electric motors spin up to speed. But about every 2-3 times i mow, i will hit something small, like a rock or a stick (pinky sized) and the blades will bend. Since the ground is uneven, that could also mean just barely touching the earth and they bend L-shaped on the end of the blade. But the big thing that happened, was where the charging plugs in, it went bad. It wouldn't charge. It wouldn't do anything. I submitted a support ticket and asked for updates every few weeks but basically there was no replies to it and then something like 9 months later they asked me to take it to a repair center that was about a 2 hour 1-way drive. So since it won't even move, you should try to push / pull it onto a trailer as dead weight. There is no way to lock the front wheels to move it, so you are constantly fighting keeping it moving straight. I ended up buying a boat winch and attaching it to my trailer. Anywho, the support center fixed it, it took about an additional month. So I wasn't able to use the mower, during its warranty period, for an entire season. I have mowed with it 3 times this year and so far so good. I mean, when it works, it cuts like a dream, but when it don't work .... thats an aweful expensive weight. Oh yea, the grass catcher setup for it, if you turn and it catches on anything, like a tree limb hanging down, it will pull them off.

@@arminius301 2nd reply because I forgot to include this, the left rear motor doesn't turn with the same speed as the right side, so in turns or even mowing straight, you can't have the speed control bars even. The left one has to be pushed forward a lot further than the right one for full power or whatever it has, then you have to adjust the other side to compensate and keep it around the same speed. So I assume, soon, the left rear motor is going to go out. And since I bought this, I have only been able to mow with it about 10 times total .... 3 years, cause its always broke down or not working.

@@sharpridgehomestead Thanks for that info. Luckily I bought mine used and realized things were going to be less than new condition. After getting the hang of driving this without looking like I'm chasing a snake I disabled the dang seat switch cause it was stopping the blade every time I went over a bump. As mentioned I use an mppt charger and solar to charge the battery pack. I'm going to use what's left of the AGM batteries (making sure never to discharge below 50%) and ultimately swapping with LiFePo4 batteries. Over the decades of homesteading I've come to the realization that if something breaks I'll be the only mechanic who will pay attention to the details and get the job done right. Same goes with doctors. I wouldn't trust any doctor more than your average "don't give a rat's arse" mechanic, so I took charge of my own health with supplementation and haven't see a doctor in over 15 years. All the best with your mower. I think it will serve you very well once you address a few annoyances!
