So for many years across many games, there's basically been little reason to pick Ryu over Akuma, or Evil Ryu when he's around. Now? I feel like that's finally different and we are gonna go into it in this video talking about what Ryu can do thats uniquely him, and not just the usual "shoto" faire. I *LOVE* how much *bravado* you're placing on a main protagonist who never *meant* to be a "bully", who never *meant* to put on himself some "destroyer" avatar! Yeah, sure, you can talk frames and bars and even what the fighter player can manage for Ryu, compared to other Shotokan characters; *I am all for that concept.* However, in the first place, Ryu was taught a *whole* lot more than what Gouki ( *please excuse my etiquette; for some strange reason I still can't get used to the name "Akuma."* ) intended to train in, and that *literally* goes without saying! *First,* Ryu often STRUGGLED with the past notion that any Shotokan *combatant* training as an ASSASSIN ( *Please look that up!* ) would have to literally *give in,* no, "[s]acrifice yourself," as Gouki emphasized, "to the *Satsui no Hado!* " It's gotten to the point where now, Gouki seems to have actually given up *trying* to allure Ryu to that path! It's especially pointless for Gouki, because *now* Ryu has achieved in his first steps utilizing the *Power of Nothingness!* At this point *now,* there seems to be absolutely NO phasing Ryu *whatsoever!* *Second,* when you really look at his character *very* carefully, while he may have been undergoing some starting degree of drive towards the Satsui no Hado at one time or another, Ryu is at least *neutrally* aware of how that kind of power can be used, and is at most *value-neutral* about his pursuit to fight and improve his strength! He's always focused, he always gets himself fully engaged in a fighting match, he seems to have become more and more thrilled in competition, and if I know him any better, he has become much *wiser* now than in the Street Fighter Zero ( *again, I can't get used to "Alpha"* ) trilogy! So if there's ANY competition with the other Shotokan characters to go by, *especially Gouki,* it's not simply because Ryu has radically changed - *every classic Street Fighter character has changed, as we may all have witnessed* - it's because Ryu has *finally* found an angle to stick to for his consistent training..., and he seems absolutely *satisfied* with that; *I see no legitimate case of "bullying" or "destructive" behavior from this character.*
@samuelevans7382 ай бұрын
@@blackskullinc.5450 I think you may be mixing things up a little bit; in the context of talking about fighting game characters specifically, the term "bully" is used to describe play styles that revolve around constant, heavy pressure. This is by no means a comment on the character's personality or story actions, merely how their move set interacts with the rest of the game. Sol Badguy from guilty gear is a famous example of a "bully" character, and once again, they aren't the type to engage in malicious behavior - though their pressure can certainly feel monstrous when playing against them! In short, "bully" when used to describe a fighting game character's moveset does not mean anything about the character's story arc or anything. Ryu is probably one of the kindest fighters in the sf6 roster... Though, when playing as them, it is certainly easy to put a lot of pressure on the opponent by pretty much shaking them down for their die gauge and trapping them in endless looping blockstrings. For more information on words that mean different things in the context of fighting games, please search for the "fighting game dictionary" on a search engine of your choice. It will likely be very useful to learn the various bits of slang used by the community, especially if English is not your first language.

"Default shoto" is a valid identity to have, though. The archetype's stood the test of time for years because people like playing them. Is it not weird for Akuma to be the most traditional shoto, even more than Ryu?
@corinfgc2 ай бұрын
@@__-be1gk Perhaps "default" is the wrong term. "Least utility and power" is more what I was getting at. If Ken, Akuma, and to a degree Luke have all the same basic tools Ryu does, but with more effective sauce, people don't have a reason to play Ryu. He is still the most basic and balanced in his approach, so he retains that "default shoto" vibe, but now he has a gameplan unique to him among the shotos and that straightforwardness can be more effective and keep up with Ken's relentless aggression and Akuma's aerial dominance. I agree that it is strange that Akuma has a better base grounded-fireball than Ryu, but I still don't feel like he's the more traditional shoto; Demon Raid, Zanku Hadoken, and a whiff punishing two-hit rekka that's safe on the first hit all swerve his gameplan a lot. Basically I like that what Ryu wants to do in a match is not just, "Ken and Akuma stuff, but worse."

So glad to see Ryu actually getting to flourish! My problem with characters like Akuma is "low health" fails as a balance when the trade-off is better damage, speed, buttons, and combos, since dying in fewer hits doesn't matter much when you can just dominate your opponent otherwise. In the next Street Fighter, i feel like Ryu should get some more sauce on his Tatsus. Of the three Shotos, Akuma has 3 different Tatsus for different purposes, Ken has his run enhanced Tatsus, and Ryu just sorta has one that chains off lights, medium is the good one, and heavy is pretty much only if you wanna side switch or YOLO through fireballs at fill screen. I want Ryu to have some sort of unique heavy tatsu like Akuma does, thatd be cool. Ryu has the upside of being a blockstring nightmare, as the video illustrates. Downsides are getting to that blockstring situation, his walkspeed is slow, and solar plexis is slow to startup. At certain ranges, its even reactable with DI. Ryu longer range options are slow and its hard for the ryu to get into the position where he can blockstring you. Plan against ryu is you have to win neutral so he cant meaty solar plexis you, i guess its kinda like fighting marissa or gief, cannot let them get their rewards in the first place. This is made possible cuz they are slow, forcing them to have to play impeccable neutral, or rely on enemy mistakes to get to their win conditions. Ryu’s will try to force you towards them with fireball, but parry it and only choose to jump in if you see a clear opening. Remember to not let them denjin buff in neutral. Most characters have quick horizontal moves to react to stuff like jamie drink and ryu denjin. Kim slide and cammy spin knuckle are prime examples. They really made akuma have better neutral and fireballs than ryu. Akuma a whole raid boss. Faster than everyone, while having consistent oki and incredible pokes/damage.

i honestly think Ryu is better than Akuma. All i know is, i have a harder time beating ryu than akuma. Plus when facing them, you can def feel that 1k less health that Akuma has, especially when im using a low dmg character like Cammy, being able to get it done in less transactions makes it feel much better

Akuma - The demon, has a lot of damage, but dies easily Ken - The rushdown shoto, has moderately high damage, has a lot of pressure and mix ups Ryu - The True Shoto, has all the basic fundamentals, now added with a lot of damage.

While an honest in your face strike throw pressure character that focuses on the new game's mechanic is in-character for Ryu, I'd still have preferred his niche to be the more defensive zoning fireball based shoto like he used to be

I saw a comment that akuma could have an interesting mechanic and that the lower his HP is, the stronger he becomes. I wish they implement this to stood him out since its on par with the fight to the death theme.

I would love to see evil Sakura return as a character release instead of evil ryu this time...

This is great. I’m stuck on gold with Ryu. Haven’t played online since Akuma came out. Just because the meta at the time and the way modern players played stopped me from playing a bit… I CANNOT wait to jump in with Ryu and start bullying nerds… 🥊

I just wish Ryu had a Jinrai type move with with the 50/50 option like Ken. Yes I want Ryu to be broken

This Standing 2 reminds me of Negan's Wretched Hammer (b1+2) being +4~+6 On-Block just because its plus doesn't mean its bad nor good either

I dropped Chun for Ryu, because i think Chun struggles so much against Akuma and everyone and their mother is playing Akuma, this tips are honestly pure gold.

Ryu should be the Akira to Ken's Jacky.

Ryu is the best shoto now. He's balance on steroids.

Ryu keeps the 'and diarrhea joke foot' kick? Perfect. I always want to take people to brown town.

I think this all well and good if you get the opportunity to start this pressure. But Akuma in the right hands will never give you the opportunity. If he starts his insane bullshit straight outta the gate, you’ve got a 50/50 chance of just being completely demolished.

Every street fighter, should be built around Ryu! He’s the main!
