It actually does do that, the only way to get the "ending" for this game is to play it once on hard, and again on the second loop on an even higher difficulty Pro, all in one sitting. Dying in the latter half of pro is a full reset since you lose all your powerups.
@SpootyBiscuit
@SpootyBiscuit 4 жыл бұрын
That boss? No. The entire game? Yes. The credits only roll when you beat the game on Pro difficulty, and the only way to access Pro (without cheats) is to beat the game on Hard, at which point the game immediately restarts from the beginning on Pro. As difficult as the game is, Ryu's on the *easier* part of it right now. That said, he'd be having a much easier time if he remembered his charge shot exists.

Watching Ryu gradually learn how R-Type’s Force Pod works and how to use it strategically made this video sublime. My favorite part about this series is that Ryan goes into these games blind, that and the fact he is so skilled and analytical so you can see his progression in real time. Simply, this is top-shelf content.

I have the remastered on switch of r-type 1-2 and I had to quit on the final stages even if it was easier than that. I had r-type on ps2 in high school and was kinda cool especially because you could charge like 10 levels of beam. Sad that it didn't come on switch

Woah. This might be the fairest extraordinarily hard game I've seen yet. The hitbox for your ship is incredibly precise and generous (check out how close those missiles get to Ryu). The enemy placement tends to leave plenty of room and time to see and predict what's coming. Not to mention when you die, the game gives you just long enough to analyze the screen before starting the next life, giving the player a moment to interpret what killed them, what to do, and how to avoid getting punished in the future. Despite being insanely hard, the game gives you lots of powerful tools that have tons of technical uses beyond just adding missiles that drop from your ship every 1.5 seconds of sustained main cannon fire. It rewards skillful play and punishes slow reflexes or bad gameplay. SO FREAKING COOL!!

This game is actually REALLY cool. The mechanic with the separable secondary ship is really diverse and interesting. The fact that you can control it remotely, that you can attach it to your front or back, and that it takes on its own abilities in response to powerups makes the game incredibly unique and enables a lot of strategy. I love that Ryu realized that since it can absorb damage, you can put it out front as a tank/sentinel. A really surprisingly interesting game considering its reputation.

R-Type III is amazing, it's one of my all time favourite shmups. Gradius 3 is pretty cool too, it just gets very punishing if you die once, especially the arcade version... Third Lightning does so much better job with the comeback mechanics, mainly the Hyper-mode, it gives you a fighting chance even after you lose everything.
@Jonathan29085

@@ZX497 Yeah, R-Type III also let's you choose 1 of 3 Forces which is cool. It's 2nd loop is very brutal. Gradius 3 SNES is a much more welcoming experience compared to Gradius III AC as it's easier and more player friendly with the Edit Mode. I absolutely loved this game as a kid and I still adore it for its advanced gameplay for a game. You should take a moment to familiarize yourself with the controls. The yellow "power up" is called "Force". Button B is manual fire and charge shots. A seperates and retracts the Force (While retracting you can press it again to stop it from retracting). X is fully automatic fire. The blue "M" is a bomb (high damage), the red/pink is two homing rockets (minimal damage). Color power ups, blue = lasers, Red/Pink = rings, Green = spherical balls of doom, Yellow = Wall hugging flames, Grey = short range missile that goes straight and causes massive damage. The "Eye" things that sticks above of you is called a "Pit". You can collect up to two of 'em at a time. Good luck with your next vid, for the 3rd boss, I recommend you charge a shot and hit the core to cause the most damage instead of poking it. Also, this game gets alot trickier towards the end. If I recall correctly, level 7 is the one that troubled me the most.

Getting to stage 3 on Hard for your first playthrough is amazing, I hope you revisit this game sometime, because some of the later level sound tracks are awesome. Also, for those wondering, yes there is another difficulty after Hard called "Pro" that is unlocked via beating the game once or inputting a code at the title, this game gets even more ridiculous.

Welcome to R-Type my friend. I spent a good chunk of my childhood playing the original game on Sega Master System. It was absolutely brutal and I think it took me at least a year to beat it. The thing was that after you run out of continues you start the game all way back in the beginning again so you better memorize everything and be alert constantly. The second last stage was the most insane level in any game I've ever played and that took the longest time for me to complete. It didn't help that once I got there I would quickly run out of continues and I had to start from the very beginning of the game again.

Beating the R-Type games is one of my greatest video game accomplishments. By the way, you can "call" the attachment thingy to you with the press of a button so you don't have to go to it. Also, you can use the same button to "shoot" it as a projectile into enemies. A lot of this game is memorization. Memorizing the enemy patterns and where they go/shoot, etc. Good luck, bro.

A good strat for that last boss of this video is to attach your gunner-ball-thingy to the back to your ship before entering it's lair, then dettaching it to the right side of the monster where his eye pops out, then bring our ship to the left side and so, no matter what, which ever side the eye pops out, you'll get a hit on it.

Holding the button down that launches also brings it back to you like a magnet. Also launching it into boss cores does massive stacking damage on top of it firing. It can be thrown at lessers that take multiple hits one shotting them. I use to fly close to bosses basically kissing them with it to do tons of damage when possible. It can clear your way in a tunnel smothered with enemy fire, launch forward clearing shots and reel it back!

One thing I think that a lot of people don't realize is just how much the game wants you to use your Force to defend yourself AND to shoot it into enemies. Blocking a lot of shots by hitting it or just how it does damage per frame when it's bumping into enemies (It does a ton!). Still it lets you be super flexible with how you're playing. But man the Charge shots hit so many more times But overall R-Type is always been brutal, although R-Type III has a bit more flexibility due to the three Force options you can use and there's a LOT less slowdown from what I can remember

Watching some of these videos is proof of how hard some games can be when you're trying to figure out what's what without the instruction booklet. I have Super R Type & it is indeed very hard but once you figure it out the challenge is not so much dealing with the difficulty but the INTENSITY of it! I enjoyed watching you tackle the first few stages especially your reactions & commentary. The only glaring mistake you made as a 1st timer is you totally forgot about the weapon charge feature. I'll be looking for a "round two" or "play through" video from you on this one.

The Arcade version [same as the one featured in "Gradius III & IV" for PS2] is, but the SNES version is merciful by comparison. You see, the worst part of the Arcade version is the Cube Stage of the Damned. I could never clear it. It takes place right before the final stage. The SNES version of Gradius III has the most difficult part being the Hi-Speed stage...if you're not prepared.

Playing the "Novice" level is a good way to get accustomed to Super R-Type, as you get to keep all power-ups after death, and you don't get nearly as many projectiles flying at you. You get a feel for the stage layouts, the obstacles in them, and powerup locations. For anyone curious, the powerups in this game are: S = Speed (as we saw) Blue M = Regular Missiles (launched slightly forward and down) Pink M = Homing Missiles Rotating Sphere Thingy = Pits (1st above, 2nd below, shields you from most impacts, but don't block projectiles as well as the Pod. Not recommended against those falling critters in Stage 3, either.) Blue Orb = Reflect Laser (3 bouncing beams straight forward and at 45-degree angles) Purple Orb = Sky Attack Laser (Bubbles straight ahead) Green Orb = Spread Beam (4 orange forward shots, slightly above and below your ship) Yellow Orb = Ground Attack Laser (beams travel straight up and down, and travel along the floor and ceiling either forward or backward, dependent on your Pod's position) Gray Orb = Shotgun Blast (Shot travels short-range, then explodes over a moderate area. First appears in Stage 4 :( ) 1st orb of any color gives you the Pod, 2nd of any color gives you a weaker version of the corresponding color, 3rd gives a strong attack of that color. Pressing A will detach or recall the Pod, making it easier to place behind you to defend against attacks from the rear.

Just a little note - don't forget your full-charge shot! It works a lot like a shotgun - you can shot at large range to spread damage to the entire room, OR you can shoot it point-blank for a TON of damage.

I think its worth mentioning that R Type has a number of remasters that are all considered pretty solid. I know you prefer to focus on the snes games, but dimensions EX is on switch and is a remaster of the original arcade games. There's also R-Type Final (and Final 2 whenever it comes out) which is a tribute to the entire series. Somehow R Type is one of those rare series that continued to survive all these years later.

I had to find a TAS (which was set to PRO difficulty!) for this one, just to see what sorts of techniques were used. The auxiliary pod definitely saw a lot of creative use, and the game gets so much harder. Some of the apparent difficulty could perhaps be chalked up to TAS showboating, but, even so, watching it makes me imagine a conversation among game developers: Dev 1: Check it out, I added a PRO difficulty level. Dev 2: Wow, is that even possible to beat?! Dev 1: I guess we'll find out!

Never played on hard.. so that level of bullet hell looked crazy at timess. I thought it was difficult enough on normal those years ago when I actually beat it as a kid. The 'destroy the ship' stage was my favorite, which I think is the stage after the one you ended on. And.. the music throughout the game is fantastic and memorable.

Huh, I mostly just remember R-Type being awesome. Maybe I was too innocent and naive to realize it was brutally difficult. But having played it a lot as a kid, watching Ryu play was pretty frustrating. XD

Growing up, I remember only a few games I could never beat despite spending hundreds of hours: Dragon Spirit R-Type Ultima IV The last may be too slow for your viewers but the others should be perfect for your series.

Playing thru the game in normal/novice is key to learning the core mechanics and which upgrades are best for each situation. Solid color upgrades are your biggest concern. As they are the key to big damage. The first Solid color upgrade from scratch will always be the orb. "S" upgrades speed and "M" upgrades missiles. But i wont spoil anything more that that.

I guess the normal mode of this game is already over-the-top for most players so the hard mode is more like "beyond inhumanity" difficulty, you did a great job on the first levels though. Those jukes you managed to pull on third level were just unreal and you really deserved to beat that one, but I guess checkpoints are way too soft for this game even at boss fights. Good stuff, loving second season of EHG! :)

All of the R-Type games are great. I find R-Type III harder, but I also like playing it more. And you get to choose from three different Force pods. There is also a really great version of the first R-Type on the TurboGrafx. Irem made some really brutal games.

Hey - doesn't seem like you ever realized that you can call your Force (the shield/powerup that attaches to the front or back of the ship) BACK to you to reattach by hitting the launching button again. Lots of the strategy comes from using it this way. That's how you achieve agility with switching it from the front to the back (shoot it out, fly past it, call it back quickly), and using it as a boomerang/battering ram is a key attack strategies since it can one-shot many enemies as it flies through them. I guess what I'm saying is: awesome video, keep up this series, it's my favorite; and GET GUD

I'm going to recommend Touhou 12: Undefined Fantastic Object. I've heard people say "Touhou" before but never specify which game. 12 is the hardest to clear (especially if you don't use continues), and the first five require an emulator for an ancient Japanese PC so they're probably a no-go.

Interesting lore about this game. The pilot is just a torso with no arms or legs. The first game you're just a brain. They switch to only using torso so that they can bring home a human that can speak to gain info on the Bydo
@massivepileup
@massivepileup 6 ай бұрын
Are you sure about that? All official art I've seen depicts the R-9A and the R-9C with a full cockpit and a human sitting inside (the whole canopy shape is to hold a cockpit inside). They don't develop neural connectors until the R-9W series and even those have a canopy for holding an entire human. After all, why have a see-through cockpit if the pilot has no eyes?
