@@imswezi9499 I think China tried to colonize Ryukyu at one point but that was at least 2,000 years ago. They couldn't communicate with the native ryukyuans because their culture, language, tradition, etc are too different from the chinese. Japan on the other hand bear much more similarities and is able to eventually colonize the islands one by one.

They were a tributary state and there was a region that consisted of Chinese, that were invited by one of the Kings of LooChoo, to be high ranking gov officiala(kumemura). That's not what's meant by "dead language". It can be written down and have a perfect system of passing it down but have all it's native speakers extinct. Once that happens a language is dead, no matter if 500 or even 1000 other people learned the language to "preserve it". With the death of the last native speakers so dies a big part of the culture surrounding the language sadly

You may be right. Latin is a completly dead language. But thanks to the Catholic church and the bible, we know how to speak latin and can still understand it.

We have some pretty good guesses and scientific approximations but we don't and never will know the exact pronunciation and the different dialects used. So yeah, we know how to write it and we understand it, but the exact pronunciation is lost forever.

Real Sicilians language is influenced by so many arabic words. Sicilians language nowadays is Italo-Dalmatian, very different with the old sicilian language. Because Muslim prosecution in Sicily (Lombard Pogroms) in 1160. Muslim is major religion in Sicily in 800 to 1000 AD, they even build The Emirates of Sicily. Many Sicilian Muslims killed and exiled by Christian Romans, and they change the language to Italo-Dalmatian version.

That's because those Japanese dialects are very influenced by the other Japonic languages living there (and still living) before Japanese was inforced because of assimilation policies.
