I used to think this was just a library-type arrangement and they were renting all they wanted. Now I'm not sure if they're buying them or Criterion is generous enough to give them these titles for free.

It feels so refreshing and nice when a guest speaks in their own language. They have a different freedom and can really discuss the films they pick in a different way. Also japanese has a certain melody to it that i like.

The translation is not exactly accurate, though. He says 頂いていきますmany times in this video, which was subtitled several times as “thank you very much”. But the Japanese phrase actually means “I’m gonna take this one” in somewhat polite manner.

I love it when someone takes a bunch of stuff. I just feel like they are so into film and that they just cant help themselves when presented with the opportunity to be a kid in a candy store so to speak. When he mentioned that it wasnt his first time in the closet, I remember the criterion twitter account posting a polaroid picture of him in the closet in 2021 because I waited for it to be posted lol. I wonder if they didnt film that or just wasn't able to release it for some reason.
