Thank you for your correction, as glycerin is not comedogenic. However, there are anecdotes that mineral oil can be comedogenic to some users, as they have experienced breakouts with mineral oil based products. Other than clinical studies, we do take anecdotes into consideration when formulating products because we try to minimise negative effects as much as possible. Silicones themselves are not comedogenic either, but the chemical structure gives it a tendency to trap debris especially when they are formulated for products used during the day, when makeup products are being layered on top. This increases the chances of pore congestion caused due to the affinity of silicone based substances on skin surface. What makes a product good or bad is not as clear cut as only studying individual ingredients, but also the interactions of ingredients that are interplayed within a formula. That’s why it is easy to study ingredients, but prowess of a cosmetic formulator can take years to develop.
