Join us as we dive into a week of adventure in Brazil. Our trip takes us from busy São Paulo to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro and culminates with the awe-inspiring beauty of Iguazu Falls.
Our trip began with an unexpected twist as our plane developed a fuel leak, heading back to DC in the middle of the night. Little did we know, fate had spared us from a tropical cyclone that swept through São Paulo on Friday, disrupting the city! Our arrival in São Paulo on Saturday marked the beginning of a whirlwind weekend of touring the city.
In Rio de Janeiro, our guide, Alan, led us through a few days of tours that hit all the highlights. From Ipanema Beach to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado, we dove straight into Rio. The Seleron Stairs, Portuguese public library, and Rio Cathedral were all great stops along the way.
Tuesday brought boat cruises around the bay and a cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain, offering unparalleled views of Rio. After lunch on top with the local monkeys, we headed across town to tour Maracanã stadium.
Wednesday was a laid-back day, which we spent soaking up the sun on Copacabana beach. That evening, we headed back across town to Maracanã, where we watched Flamengo triumph over Palmeiras (and got to check phenom Endrick before he joins Real Madrid this winter).
Thursday dawned with a scenic bike ride and a delightful food tour in the Glória neighborhood, exploring traditional Brazilian flavors. The day ended with a little more beach time and a beautiful sunset over Ipanema.
Friday we hopped on a flight to Iguazu Falls, where lush trails, coatis, and toucans awaited. After spending the day on the Argentine side, we made it to our hotel just in time to watch the sunset over the falls.
We enjoyed a Saturday morning walk along the trails - before the trails opened up to the public. The day continued with a Macuco safari, where we road a Zodiac up the roaring river to the base of the falls.

Perhaps some would call me naive but I’m South African (Cape Town) and have visited Rio many times before (I just keep coming back). I love Rio so much that I even decided to stay there for a year back in 2018. Despite my Portuguese being very poor, if it was up to me, I wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else in the world (and this comes from someone who have travelled fairly extensively) ps: that element of danger that comes with Rio makes me feel like I’m home away from home ❤😂

I'm happy that they chose Brazil to visit. Always welcome. If you visit Brazil again, I recommend you visit Lençõis Maranhences and Pantanal Matogrossense e Bonito, a place with beautiful, transparent waters.

Eu moro em Cuiabá MT, entrada do Pantanal, a cidade é boa mas visitantes vem direto ao Pantanal, aqui tem parque nacional chapada dos Guimarães, tem um resort Malai manso em um lago de 53km, tem perto nobres com nascentes, rios azuis, cavernas, em primavera do leste tem lagoa azul que são fervedouros. É muita coisa que perdem bem próximo.

Come back often, there are many foreign families who have decided to live here, there is even an American family who lives in Rio who has a You Tube channel, many decide to live here mainly because of the culture which is very diverse, you will learn to live with all types of people, and in general we all get along well, it's easy to make friends in Brazil, you won't feel on the margins of society, as happens with many foreigners who go to live in other countries, it's very easy to integrate here. We have problems, of course we do, but the good things we have outweigh a lot, I've lived in Japan where there are practically no security problems, where the quality of life is excellent, but I woke up every day thinking about when I would return to this blessed land. called Brazil.

Se um dia quiserem morar aqui venham para Niterói, cidade na frente do Rio. Os aluguéis são mais baratos. Procurem por Icaraí, Piratininga (a praia tem vista para Fogos de Copacabana no final de ano), São Francisco, Camboinhas e Itaipu.

It is the Hotel Das Cataratas. Both that hotel and the Gran Melia on the Argentina side are inside the park. It is a splurge hotel but with the incredible benefit of getting the park to yourself.

Música caribenha no Brasil não dá né, nem escutamos isso, o Brasil é gigante,tem diversos tipos de músicas e ritmos, música latina não é da nossa cultura, Rio e São Paulo não são as únicas cidades do Brasil,tem mais de 26 estados, e cidades enormes tão melhores quanto Rio de janeiro e São Paulo. Brazil is not just Rio, São Paulo and the Iguaçu Falls, Rio for example is a beautiful city but dominated by dirt and traffic, the South of Brazil, within the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, is a another Brazil. The only thing similar is the language, we all speak Portuguese.

De fato o sul do Brasil é incrivel. Eu inclusive me digo carioca de nascimento e gaúcho de coração. Mas não é bem assim que vc citou. Não é como se vc passasse da divisa de São Paulo com Paraná e você fosse para outro país. Algumas cidades no Paraná e em Santa Catarina são bem parecidas com muitas cidades em São Paulo, Minas Gerais e Goiás. Rio Grande do Sul é bem diferente. As casas lá parecem Argentina ou Uruguai. Se vc fizer Street View no Uruguai ou na Argentina vai ver que parece muito Pelotas, Rio Grande, Bento Gonçalves ou qualquer outra cidade gaúcha

Rio itself is a pretty city but super overrated in every other aspect. As said here before, don't miss Florianopolis and all the Chapadas (Veadeiros, Diamantina, etc) which imo are the best places in Brazil. And since you've already been to Iguazu falls, try Salto do Yucuma which is the longest stretch of waterfall in the world. The list is huge, plenty to do and see in every aspect.
