Here’s my rendition of Sonny Stitt’s solo on “Scrapple from the Apple” - a composition by Bebop innovator Charlie Parker. The piece was originally written in 1947 and borrowed the chord progressions of Fats Waller’s “Honeysuckle Rose” and George Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythms.”
After doing quick search, I discovered that scrapple is a traditional sausage dish enjoyed primarily in Pennsylvania and the mid-Atlantic region of the US. Apple Scrapple is a type of scrapple that is made with a combination of meat scraps and apples. It is typically fried and served as a breakfast food. Some people love it, while others find it an acquired taste.
Was Charlie Parker referring to a scrapple cooked in New York ?
