Episode 2 sees me travel from Ahipara to Kaitaia and then Kerikeri, as I skip the Northland Forests in favour of resting up an injured knee and sorting out some plantar fasciitis in my foot.
Once rested, I meet back up with Julia and we tackle the Waitangi Forest together to end up in Paihia on a particularly rainy day.

Weather! Good to see you back on the trail. Bad days are just that. they aren't give up days as you know, although it can be hard when your head and your heart are arguing. I haven't been in that part of NZ for many years but the roads still look familiar and the historic buildings of course haven't changed, neither has the weather.I remember having to book a cabin at the camp when our campsite became waterlogged. The Kerikeri River trail looks pretty. Happy trails.

Love to see you out there on the trail smashing it! Looking forward to seeing the next part of your journey. Gotta take the bad days with the good days, but don't let the bad days get you down!

I have discovered your videos recently and find them really inspiring, especially your honesty. One of the simplest and best pieces of advice I ever heard about thru-hiking was “Never quit on a bad day”. All the best with the journey, an incredible achievement and experience, however far you go.

Thanks Andrew, whenever I've had those bad days, I've always remembered that particular phrase! It's amazing how much it can help to push you along :) Thanks for the kind words, Happy New Year!

You are going great . A wise employer told me once slow down and you will go faster. It was a while before i understood this but im glad . As it works . I have done a lot of hikes and one that stands out was one where the last 6 km at night with old trail makers and a lot that where missing. so after a bit of back and forward and going around in circles i slowed down and away i went back on track . You have got this you can master this . the hard work is behind you The bad days are just a great way to learn looking forward to seeing your next adventure you have got this

My wife and I walked to the falls when we first arrived in NZ some thirty five years ago. At the time the track did not appear well used and we felt like bushwhackers. Encountering the waterfall and pool in the middle of a hot summer day we dived in au naturel in the firm belief we had discovered paradise. Didn’t realise there is a viewing platform above the falls. You are doing well. Obviously there needs to be more direction posts, but the track is in its infancy and those involved are doing a great job. You will be able to sit back one day and say “I did the track before the neon signs advertising McDonalds turn right in 200 metres” became the norm.
