Self taught dev here! Share ko lang, baka maka-inspire... Nursing undergrad po ako, at nabuhay lang sa mga call center companies dati. Inaral ko dati ung PHP... nagamit ko xa pero di ko masasabing naging proficient ako sa language na un. January 2020, inaral ko ung JavaScript --- hated that language for the longest time. Siguro ever since 2012 iniiwasan ko yang JS na yan, pakahirap kasi intindihin lalo na sakin na di naman graduate ng kahit anong computer or programming related course... Asa lang din ako lagi sa Stackoverflow. Pero nung nagfocus ako at un lang inaral ko, after a year, masasabi kong nasa intermediate level na siguro ung alam ko sa JS. At last year, mga bandang end of May, na hire ako as JS dev ng isang medium-sized company sa US, at ang sahod ko ay nagrarange na ng 150k monthly... sumosobra pa nga kadalasan. Un nga lang di ako madalas pumapasok... huling pasok ko September pa, pero di nila ko tinatanggal... sadyang tamad lang ako sir. Pero everytime na may matutuhan either by reading docs or watching some tutorial videos na related sa JS, talagang tinetesting ko. Maganda experience ko kahit na self-taught dev lang ako... pero xempre minsan iniisip ko na gusto ko pa ding mag-aral sana, kahit 35y/o na ko.

I agree, Kuya Dev. Self study ay hindi na mawawala kahit na graduate ka na. It also depends on their circumstance and mindset. Kaya sana wag silang mag give up kahit gaano kahirap. There will always be a way.

I'll answer based from experience as a senior eng. and as a person who has done interviews with lots of engineers both coming from bootcamps and from the academe. Just to answer your question. 1. "Bakit hindi ituro yung ibang programming languages sa academe?" -> Computer science curriculum is based on theories. The assumption is that, if you are well-versed in the foundations of computer science, then learning a new programming language is just a matter of searching google. And also, this is a very important one, big tech companies care a lot about the inner workings of everything. According to you: working in the industry, "you don't really need the inner workings of the database or how TCP/IP works". This is correct. But the problem is, this is correct only in the Philippines. This is also true for companies with relatively easy projects compared to others. We don't have big tech companies. The majority of projects here(not all) are outsourced projects. Now, let's move away from the Philippines. Any other country that has their own big tech company(google, amazon, Indeed for example). When you go to an interview, especially if you are a back-end developer, they will ask you: 1. Given a map matrix where 0 is a water pixel and 1 is a land pixel. Design an algorithm to count the number of islands in linear time and preferably linear space. You can use any programming language that you like. -> You can not answer this if your theory knowledge is low. Even if you master all the programming languages out there. Programming language is a tool. Outside Philippines, they don't need someone who just knows how to use a tool. 2. Design the architecture of the reservation system of Uber. -> You can not answer this without knowing the inner workings of different types of databases actually. You have to know the inner workings and tradeoffs of event servers as well.. Not to mention durability race conditions. These are the types of questions in tech companies outside the Philippines. So yes, maybe it's true that you don't need much concepts when working in the Philippines. But there is a caveat: that is only true for projects that are quite simple compared to more demanding projects out there. So if you wanna stay here and wait for outsourced projects from someone, sure, focus on programming languages and frameworks. But if you wanna work with the best engineers out there, focus less in programming languages. Focus more in the deeper theories of computer science. Once you get used to them, mastering a programming language or a framework is just a matter of searching google.

I've been self-studying machine learning for 2 years and yet I'm not confident with it because it is too broad. However, I can discuss some things and explain some principles nmn. I just dropped out of College, 19 years old, and is currently looking for a job and possibly juggle bootcamping on the side. Idk if it's just me but yung sa college Kasi namin sumakto sya sa pandemic, yes tinuturuan kami Ng coding languages and such but most of the things (aside from the coding languages) are already in my stock knowledge. Pero mabalik Tayo sa coding languages, so yun na nga, nagtuturo Sila Ng coding languages, for example. In the first semester c++ kami one subject. 1 hour a week, and I think it's definitely not enough.. Bakit Hindi enough? Kasi Ang kalat Ng curriculum mga bhiee, ang dami masyado ng career path sa computer computer tapos pinagsamasama nila... Basically after graduating alam mo lahat ng basics puro basics puro fundamentals pero it's still gonna be hard to get a job.. The reason I dropped out is actually because of Solidity and AI... It was December and back then I was in ano, web3/crypto.. I got side hustles in crypto (not necessarily computer related) pero I talked to a Solidity dev and that's when I realized na Hindi tinuturo Yung Solidity sa college.. Ang dami nagsasabi na in demand ang computer jobs, and at 19 I found out na that's because the tech industry overtakes the curriculum... If you think about it Kasi mga brosis, if nursing student ka, well yes going to a university is actually great kasi most surgical procedures and medicines have already existed for centuries, basically not much have changed.. On another hand, "TECH" Solidity/Web3 has improved annually and after that may lumabas nanaman na "AI" As I've said ha I'm only 19 and I may miss a few important concepts pero opinion ko lang Naman Yan. Pero what I did was pick a coding language (depends on the job you are looking for) and to compensate for the lack of education I'll also try to get into call center to improve my communication skills and syempre para may sarili akong Pera.

I found this channel on Facebook groups and I totally agree with you Sir I'm in my 3rd year in Computer Engineering and honestly I feel that I'm wasting my time and my parents money in college, specially the E-learning set-up it literally bores me. Last year I enrolled to a lot of Software related courses on UDEMY which I got for free all of them may mga coupon code kasi but through the process I'm always after for the certification at the end nawawala rin yung napag-aralan as you've said nga that certificates is worthless bigla akong natauhan. The next time na sisimulan ko yung course I'll make sure na ma grasp ko yung idea thank you for sharing your thoughts sir.

Tinapos ko to pero pag talagang naghahanap ako ng job hiring sobrang hirap makapasok kahit gradute pa ako ng Comsci masakit .. kase feeling mo grumaduate ka lang pero walang sense.. salamat before ako mag bootcamp nakita ko agad to... Iba parin ung self study.. apaka lawak ng tech industry i hope sa maalign ako sa tech industry na tinapos ko. Salamat sa idea po.

self taught web developer din ako, i know basic knowledge on HTML CSS AND JAVASCRIPT and nagcreate nadin ako mga projects thru frontendmentor, kaso nasstuck ako ngayon nagapply ako kaso ang hirap , di ko na alam susunod gagawin ko maganda sana kung meron kasama na mag self study para magtulungan kung sakali sa mga codes

Oo nga po sir kokonti lang tech talents natin pero mahirap talaga makapasok Kaya dapat nasa isip mo palagi bago ka mag apply is (they are always looking for the best candidate)so tatanungin mo sarili mo talaga e (am i the best candidate yet?) So i peprepare mo nanaman yung sarili mo mag reresearch ka muna about the company pero sa tingin ko talaga pag nag fail ka in one company ma fefeel mo na nag lelevel up ka , kase (you've been through the situation of rejection)masasabi mo sa sarili mo . Atleast na boost yung comunication and social skills mo so ngayun ready ka na sa next company to apply with.but the difference is from the recent failure ,alam mo na yung need mong baguhin sa sarili mo which is a good practice for your morality -Nice video sir thank you

I have also have a time in my life na gusto ko na rin mag-drop out kasi working student din po ako, dagdag pa na nagkapandemic wala akong magamit na pc or laptop. Kaso dito sa Pilipinas kasi iba 'yung tingin nila sa mga college drop out, makakatanggap ka ng disappointments sa mga kamag-anak at kakilala. Any advice po sa mga ga-graduate na?

Nahihirapan po ako mag decide kasi I am a Senior High School graduate at baka after bootcamp is hindi maka pag land ng job. Most of the employers po ba required ng college level or college grad? Or di po ba sila tatanggap ng Senior High School graduate?
