Nominal changes to a tune on a "small" engine usually don't yield major results, however you can now sleep well knowing you've made it as right as you can. Time to cram some air into it! Can't wait to hear what it sounds like.

Unless the engine is direct injected then the mixture for best power is usually slightly rich. The cooling effect on the intake charge increases charge density and the bit of extra fuel helps ensure all the O2 burns even if the mixture isn't perfectly homogeneous.

The rich mixture is likely from the aftermarket cam overlap. Air fuel mixture is flowing into the cylinder and then getting sucked out the exhaust via scavenging. This is good for making power, bad for emissions and fuel economy. This will be more apparent once then engine is boosted, and she shoots a nice flamethrower out at high load.

Hey, love all your videos-big thumbs up from a fellow tinkerer in Michigan. So I just wanted to put it out there for future video ideas that an AGNI/Lynch motor would literally be perfect for an electric motor repower project on this car or any other smaller vehicle project: The AGNI or Lynch motor is a unique axial gap permanent magnet brushed DC electric motor. The motor has a pancake-like shape and was invented by Cedric Lynch in 1979. The Lynch motor is built from ferrite blocks sandwiched between strips of metal, instead of conventional copper coil windings, and is held together purely by magnets. The motor is available in several sizes (6.6 lb) to (24 lb) weight and provides a power of 1.5 kilowatts (2.0 hp) to 11 kilowatts (15 hp) within an efficiency range of 80% to 90%. Any voltage battery up to 90 volts can be directly connected or a variety of controllers will work such as cheap PWM or golf cart controllers of many power levels. I've even ran mine (AGNI 15kw capable) off a 3Kw brushed motor controller for an ebike. What's amazing is the torque produced: I once hooked a single 18650 battery directly and the shaft spun about 90 RPM and had an incredible torque for such low voltage and motor speed. A 9v battery spun it about 300rpm and you could not hold the shaft from spinning with your hand, 48 volts is about 2,500 rpm and it will rip a back tire right off an electric bike. A very interesting motor so I thought I'd throw it out there, thanks again for excellent and interesting content.

Batteries are definitely a huge outlay. on my 2 seater go kart I used 4-12 volt "power chair batteries" and on my electric boat motor I've used a couple 1kw 48v ebike batteries. I may switch to power chair batteries in the boat sometime in the future when the ebike batteries get low.
@ProlificInvention
@ProlificInvention 2 жыл бұрын
@Alfred Wedmore The AGNI motor works differently then most, I've actually read that AGNI motors are often directly connected to high power sources under 24 volts. I think that this ASMO carts article about the Lynch motor is very detailed and helpful when working with them to get peak output power and just interesting information overall.

I've tuned speed density on turbo and non-turbo single cylinder motorcycle engines. It's absolutely the way to go in my opinion. The algorithm wizards have figured out all the hard math stuff for you to the point where you pretty much only have to worry about the tuning itself. Also you'll generally find peak torque around 12.6:1 AFR in my experience. Best lean torque is usually 13.2ish but on suboptimal engine designs the power difference with the extra fuel can be pretty noticable
@robotcantina8957
@robotcantina8957 2 жыл бұрын
The 420 certainly qualifies as a suboptimal engine design and it likes to run rich. I will continue to experiment with the AFR but it looks like the engine really wants more fuel.

Good stuff! I’ve watched all episodes love the efi tuning and science. I will say that you should consider adding an electric motor somewhere in the drive line that can feed in torque on demand. Maybe a push button red momentary switch to complete a circuit to some lithium ion power tool batteries wired in series sitting in the trunk for front/rear weight balance. Kobalt 24v are relatively cheap $100 per 200 watt hours (2 of 4ah 24v for $100). Each pack is 6s2p arrangement.

the map sensor value doesn't mean much with such a small variance. in fact I'd bet reversion is probably toying with the reading with the filtering. What you could do, it put the map sensor in helmholtz tube tuned for say 1/4 wave. that will help stabilize the vacuum readings. you could also just build a helmholtz tube into the intake manifold, IE put a tube perpendicular to the intlet to the cylinder head and help smooth it. the AF ratio, tune for best performance.

You never TELL an engine what it should have, ie, AFR, you give it what it WANTs for most power. If you polish intake ports to a mirror finish it will want 10:1, roughen them up and 13:1 might make the most power. Even when we fully dyno tune an engine, we still swap out jets at the track to see if it will go faster down a ¼, ie, richer in one area might give it more torque in an area that makes it accel faster. Your "test and give it what makes the most speed" is correct.

Shipping companies have it hard these days. Tough schedules, not enough employees, and a lot of houses and roads are not clearly marked. I've found USPS to be the most reliable in general although I know they are not always an option. Man I am so exited for the stupercharger (turbo?) and greatly appreciate you taking us along the way and teaching us so much. I can only dream of building a turbo efi briggs motor. It makes so much sense in terms of time and effort compared to a full size engine. So perfect for learning. I really hope to do it someday when I have the time and money.

Robot Cantina If you tighten the spring in the primary clutch or lighten the weights you will raise engagement RPM which may be helpful, but you will also decrease the clamping force on the belt, which may not be desired toting around a whole car. What really needs to happen is an adjustment to the secondary spring or secondary clutch ramp. These things need to be more aggressive. If you think your peak power is at around 3800-4000 rpm with that 420 you want the engine to rev up to that limit as quickly as possible and stay there until the clutches shift completely out to 1:1. According to one of your previous videos during the 0-60 testing you can hear and see your engine (during the datalog) rev up to a point and then the rpm begins to lower again, this is because the clutches are shifting out too quickly. This is most effectively fixed by increasing spring force or ramp angle in the secondary clutch once you get the primary engaging where you want it to.
@robotcantina8957
@robotcantina8957 2 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct, thank you for taking the time to point out my mistake. Indeed, the driven pulley needs to be adjusted and not the clutch. My only concern is we are not using a genuine Comet 40 series driven pulley and it dosn't have the adjustment holes. From my research, it appears I need to move the hole at least .5 inch/13mm to start off with and see what happens. When we publish the video, we will include the datalog files showing the RPM curve as the torque converter goes through its range. should be interesting. Unfortunately it is rainy and cold this week and the car is off the road due to unrelated upgrades. Stay tuned.

Regarding AFR: The o2 sensor doesn't measure in 14.6:1 or whatever, it measures in lambda, as in how much CO or O2 free there is. It doesn't care about what fuel you're running. So 14.7 is actually just 1 lambda, 13.2 is 0.9 lambda, which is what you were referring to as "most power" (which would be 13:1 or so on E10, if you were actually measuring AFR, but you're not, you're measuring lambda). The stoichiometry number you see doesn't matter diddly squat, and if you switch it into lambda mode you can see why. In summary; tune in lambda.
@robotcantina8957
@robotcantina8957 2 жыл бұрын
This is a tough conversation to have in the comment section. I use AFR because that is what I'm used to seeing. If I switch to lambda things get a little confusing. So picture this.... I'm just a monkey and bump the VE numbers up or down. test the car and bump the ve numbers again. I'm only looking at 5 or 6 cells and when the car go faster I'm happy. Doing the scientific tuning whether its Lambda or AFR means little to me when the engine seems to want more fuel than what is appropriate. If switching to Lambda helps the microprocessor then I'll do that, but at the end of the day I just bump the VE numbers until the car goes faster. Hope that makes sense.
@CreeperOnYourHouse
@CreeperOnYourHouse 2 жыл бұрын
@@robotcantina8957 It's a bit of a tough conversation to have, I guess, but the point i was trying to make is that tuning as if the stoichiometry changes is a bad idea. Even if it does change, because the o2 sensor doesn't care what the stoichiometrical ratios are. You might aim for mid-12's because that's what your head tells you, because that's what the stoich mixture is for what you're aiming for, but you end up rich because the lambda sensor only sees 0.8 lambda or whatever, and reports back stoich numbers as if you're running gasoline. If you're using manual tuning to add power, most of this is semi-irrelevant, since that's just used to generate automatic tunes, but still something good to know when reading AFR. I hope I'm making sense, I guess.

our experience is once a lamda range is honed in on - then optimize timing. generally we see if you find best power at lamda .84 - then lean down to .88 - you might loose power at first but if you add 1 - 2 deg ignition it can sometimes pick up more as a trend the leaner you go the more timing you need
@robotcantina8957
@robotcantina8957 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The video really didn't get into much detail, but I focus on the acceleration between 50 to 60 MPH, This range is only 5 or 6 cells and it is past the power curve of the stock 420 engine. I have spent a lot of time trying to find the right mixture and it is a work in progress. For some reason the engine wants a richer mixture. Leaning it out + adding timing seems to slow the car down and cause the CHT to rise above 300F. The weather is not cooperating this week, but I'll get back to tuning soon and report the findings.
@HPRaceDevelopment
@HPRaceDevelopment 2 жыл бұрын
@@robotcantina8957 while its a shitload of work - I think your dyno would be great to solve this...dyno as same cells it runs at - and just do an optimization, plot lamda vs power and go from say .75-.92 lamda and then do and ignition sweep same test at a rich best lamda setting(afr is a 'bs' number anyways unless you truly know exactly what the fuel's real stoich is). And lamda is just a guy around a corner telling you what he saw after the crime happened. It's not truly accurate to combustion conditions but it's generally close enough to be useful. You should see a window range where it makes about same/best power and then for air cooled I suggest go to the richest fuel setting that still makes good power. The other thing to try and replicate is engine temp it actually sees while running in the car. I wouldn't sweep the engine on the dyno for a "curve" I would just hold it at the rpm of where it begins acceleration at in car. Max acceleration/fastest time is achieved by best power delivered early in a race - and top speed is just raw power. So ideally for accel times the faster it can get off the line and going initially the faster your times will be (usually at expense of top speed due to gearing). Love your channel - you are brilliant and wish I knew more about your car engine dyno - that thing is sweet. I need to add a function brake like yours was to my inertial dyno wiht a load cell so I can do steady state. I bought a second dyno water brake, but plan to convert it to an engine dyno and keep my chassis dyno wiht addition of load cell. Right now I use an automotive disc break - works good but heats up fast!

That little engine is really pumping. Consider: Stabilize the manifold pressure fluctuations somehow. E G. Increase the intake plenum length or add a small can shape with smaller than plenum attachment and with bung hole for map sensor or just find a smoother location or whatever it takes to buffer the rapid fluctuating pressure at the sensor. I think that having the processor continuously performing a heap of ( historical) rapid changing calculations just slows the flow of processing speed, decision making, and timely command and control. My thoughts are that: The processor have 1) To much data to process 2) Will miss data to process

Having spent some time with homebrew speedy efi on an air cooled vw i would advise that you keep under advisement that what is tuning gospel for a liquid cooled engine may be a little less black and white with air cooling and a cylinder head temp a hundred degrees hotter. Ime you will be a point or so richer under power and idle than your typical liquid cooled engine.. I have also built a small vacuum chamber to dampen the manifold signal pulsing with individual throttle bodies to make tuning easier. Since your engine is coupled to a cvt it's not making super fast changes in rpm so a little map lag should be tolerable. Oh and I see you used that garden tractor alternator.

I disagree that the gnomes are stealing your tools, while they are taking them without permission the gnomes are simply gardening the tools to grow Snap-On trees. The fruits from these trees are harvested and sold to mechanics for a high price being so rare, it takes delicate hands to grow a Snap-On tool from a Craftsman.

I know when running a turbo with a 1 cylinder you need to have a chamber between the turbo and throttle body of at least 1.5x the displacement of the engine to act as a resonant buffer (it smooths out the pressure wave of the intake valve shutting/opening), but im wondering if the same is true for a supercharger. Would you be willing to test that theory when you get to it?
@robotcantina8957

I'll have to do the math, but the volume of the charge pipe from the supercharger to the manifold is about 1.5X the engine displacement. I'll have more videos on the supercharger setup coming soon.

Yes, but they are hard to get. As you may or may not know, most honda engines spin counter clockwise., However the original Insight engine spins clockwise. Most Honda transmissions are unsuitable for this project. I believe the Integra RSX gearbox fits with some modifications and has close ratios.

@@robotcantina8957 Of the top of my head, thought I remember 90s preludes with the H series motors also have the same layout as well? Edit: Seems I was mistaken about the prelude. But based on google images of different honda model engine bays, it seems like not just the RSX but also other 02-07 hondas used variants of the K20 as well and had the transmission on the left. Maybe a manual from the right kind of civic/crv/accord might also have more suitable ratios than the insight if an rsx unit is too difficult to find? It seems honda has since moved to putting all their transmissions on the left so one from a newer car may also work although the mounting might be even more different from your prelude than an older gen.

Maybe just get rid of the manual transmission all together and just put a second CVT in to get the ratio-range, just backwards: The wheel speed determines the ratio of the CVT instead of the engine speed. To start from a standstill just limit the travel of the second CVT to avoid that it disengages completely (or connect it to the clutch pedal, to engage it when it is released).

First off, I love the channel and these projects. I think that the proper calibration of the map sensor was irrelevant. You just offset the value to match your ambient 95-96kpa. I would have left it alone and tuned it like normal. In my experience, anything over 90kpa isn't a huge difference to 100kpa.
@ocdman202
@ocdman202 2 жыл бұрын
Map stands for manifold absolute pressure I am told. Your point is well taken on this.. Irrelevancy is tantamount with proper calibration.. Thank you for this. When you say "tuned it like normal" what do you mean.. ??
@EricErnst
@EricErnst 2 жыл бұрын
@@ocdman202 disregard the maximum and minimum map reading. If the sensor is just reading an offset, it literally won't matter whether the fuel table cells are at 96 or 93kpa, the value in the cell is what matters. If the sensor reads 93kpa but atmospheric pressure is actually 96kpa, you'll just treat 93kpa like atmospheric. He didn't need to add an offset to the sensor because all you do is change the kpa numbers on the y-axis of the table.. the values in the actual cells won't change... because what the cpu thought was 93kpa was actually 96kpa.. but the O2 sensor is still reporting its readings. If you tune the fuel for a certain air:fuel ratio based on the kpa and rpm, the pressure won't actually matter.. just that the sensor is consistent. If the pressure is actually 96kpa but the sensor is reporting 93kpa, that doesn't change the ideal fueling at the sensor's reported pressure. Offsetting the map sensor via software only changes what you see, not what the computer (or engine) sees. When tuning, you'd only relabel the y axis by a few kpa on the fuel table and not any of the actual values of the cells. It's like tuning under boost without a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator. The computer doesn't know that fuel pressure is dropping, it only needs to know that more duty cycle is required the higher you go in boost to compensate for the boost pressure fighting against the fuel pressure. The computers only know what they need to know. And as long as the end result is that the engine gets the required fuel, it really doesn't matter how the computer calculates it. The map sensor offset in this case did nothing but make him feel better.. Which is fine, it's just unnecessary. I typically consider 100kpa to members atmospheric pressure. Anywhere in there is close enough. But the engine's volumetric efficiency does not change much between 85kpa-100kpa.. the 3kpa offset at WOT is a very minor issue. Think about your own car. How much of a power boost do you get between 7/8 throttle and full throttle? Meanwhile, in my supercharged k2500 Silverado, I can cruise at 75mph at 11% throttle. The difference in my volumetric efficiency varies 1%-4% from 85kpa to 100kpa from 500 to 6000rpms. My 1992 c1500 Silverado changes less than that. And that's 15kpa. The narrarator is piddling with 3kpa. There won't be a difference if he installs a new sensor and it is reading 96kpa without the 3kpa offset. The engine will run the same. An engine can run on a very wide range of air:fuel ratios. It will typically make peak power around 12.5:1 but can go 17:1 or leaner at light cruise to save fuel.. but the chemical formula to burn all of the fuel and air molecules is 14.7:1. When the engine is cold, it can run as rich as 9:1 to aid in warmup because the engine needs more fuel when it's cold. Think of it like a choke feature but with fuel injection. I know i was all over the place with this response, but I'm trying to share why I think the map sensor offset won't matter to the engine.. even if it's a variance in the sensor and he changes the sensor to one that reads "correctly".
@ocdman202

Basically you'll tune fuel flow and timing to whatever valve the map sensor gives. The only way you'd create a problem is if you changed sensors that suddenly yielded a different output voltage for the same pressure as before
@EricErnst
@EricErnst 2 жыл бұрын
@@ronniedale6040 I'm not quite sure how he'll tune his timing table. I suppose he could tune it on the dyno. I'm not aware of a knock sensor on a small single cylinder engine so there's no real way to tell if it's getting close to knock. That, and the valvetrain or cam or rotating assembly noisy and give false knock readings on a knock sensor if he fits one to it. I'd like to see the timing table optimized. I feel that will have more of an effect on the way the engine runs than a map sensor that reports 3kpa low. It took me a long time to set mine, but i believe it's perfect. I tuned for maximum vacuum at idle and it never reports knock retard while cruising or under wot. I added anywhere between 4⁰ and 22⁰ of spark advance from the factory settings throughout the spark tables on my 1992 tbi 350 c1500. I was more aggressive on my 1990 k2500. It runs 31⁰ of timing at idle and 38⁰ @ 2900 @ 100kpa. I pull 1⁰ of advance per psi (~7kpa) of boost. That's on a small block v8. I'm very interested in Jimbo's concrete mixer engine.
