Kerry and Phil explore Lehi’s teachings about the fall that stem from his dream. We tie it into Nephi’s experiences as he learns from God, and the need we all have to come into conversation with God. We also discuss what our dark and dreary waste may look like, and how we can be guided through that, and what it has to do with having a fallen and divine nature, and what Christ and covenant have to do with that, and with overcoming our lost and fallen state, and the various ways that people think that through which tend to discount and negate the atoning sacrifice of Christ.
We are grateful for our sponsor, Lisa Spice, and our producer, BJ Muhlestein, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

Our oldest son is married to a man. My husband and I have been so thankful for the increased understanding of hesed. As we hold fast to our covenants with the Lord, we can extend hesed to our children. In this way we can become their connection to Christ. What we don't do is promote our son's choices. We've found that there is a difference between loving and supporting our son, and promoting our son's choices. We keep our eyes on Christ and our arms around our child.

Thank you so much for sharing your difficult situation and How you are choosing to have an increase of hesed. May you continue to gain strength through the power of keeping covenants and staying on the covenant path. Just as Lehi stayed by the tree while his sons wandered. My sister is in the same situation and is responding in a similar fashion. You are not alone. Bless You. Thank you for your courage and sharing.

@@rusunnynow Yes! Thank you for this! I know so many, including some of my guests, who are in the same situation you are in, and the loving yet faithful response is so uplifting and affirming and powerful. Bless us all as we work our way through loving our families and staying by the tree!

When you talked about how Nephi grew into having conversations with God, it reminded me about what President Nelson said in General Conference. "Our prayers can be--and should be--living discussions with our Heavenly Father."

Amen to that! I think we often underestimate the power of our Holy-Ghost-aided conversations with God. I actually will very soon have a little thought on what we can learn from Nephi about that in the "daily bread" section of our website (patreon.com/enlightenedgeedu). But I didn't tie it into President Nelson's statement like you have. That is a powerful addition! Thank you!

Yes, it does not matter wherever we start from... or where hundreds of other's gossip says we are at... The gossipers and shamers want us to become stuck and fear without their approvals... ! They wish to appear by their own powers to have popular support... do not take the bait ! BE CUATIOUS ! ONLY AND HUMBLY LISTEN TO CHRIST !!!

Amen to that! The folks in that building do such a great job of making us feel like they really know what they are talking about, but we have to remember that they have no foundation, which means that everything they are basing their thoughts on is literally baseless and they literally have no authority or real knowledge. We just have to remember that, even when it doesn't feel like it, and hold fast to Christ and the rod.

I feel the Spirit is teaching me, and I do wonder how many of us in the church would point the finger at the Lord from the great and spacious building if He were here today. I did appreciate the comments about shame, and how believing Christ may not take the challenge away, still the Lord walks with us. When He was here on earth He was with Mary and associated with those considered in society as unclean, or not understood. We have so many examples of His compassion on those who so called did not fit in. Maybe we are just all required to be with the Lord and know He loves us as we are, where we can move forward He is there but some of us may just have to sit a little longer but we are at the tree because if He is with us guiding us forward at the pace He knows we can move. My insight from my read was the first group that moved forward towards the tree were as you were talking about distracted into sin and away from Christ, Telestial understanding? The next group got all the way to the tree Christ but were distracted by shame, from the mockers over the way in the great and spacious building. Terrestrial understanding? While the third group believed and knew Christ was for them and they trust in Him and follow as best they can. It may take time but they trust, not only are they enough but Christ is enough for them. Celestial understanding? What do you think?

This is a great insight! I think that is a powerful way of reading this, and it can guide us well and help us get lot out of it as we keep moving forward. I am sure there are other valuable and helpful ways of reading it (the beauty of symbols), but I really like this one and I believe it will help me think through how I act and react to things. Thank you!

Thank you both for this conversation. As you were talking about the “Wise purpose in Him” and the lost pages, as I looked back at the introduction and at the testimonies of Nephi, Mormon and Moroni… WOW… what if the wise purpose was-even more than foreseeing a setback-the power of three firsthand witnesses? Am I right in thinking the lost pages were translated from Mormon’s abridgment? I think so… so there would have only been two actual writers (yes, directly quoting at times from other writers, of course), but wow. Wow. Wow. Reading in 1 Nephi 12 where Nephi sees what is going to happen at the end of the book, and thinking of Mormon and Moroni writing as it all “came to pass” as Nephi had written… it used to bother me that Nephi had to see the destruction of his people, but suddenly that feels so significant, that Nephi bear a testimony in his own hand as the one who begins the testimony, to witness the end (and the restoration) as an echo from the past. 43:04

I believe Laman and Lemuel were typical of most Jews at the time, they were strict adherents to the Law of Moses and were routinely “looking beyond the mark”. They were also adherents to the laws implemented by Josiah. Which is to say they rejected the revelations given to their father and Nephi of the divine birth of the Savior, the Tree of Life, etc.

I would guess that you are right. Everyone around them was keeping the law in some ways. In some ways they weren't. I address that a bit in my video at Patreon.com/enlightenedgeedu. In any case, I think you are right! In some ways we could call them cultural Jews, but not really keeping the covenant in their hearts.
