Motorcycle Travel Australia: We did it....after two attempts we made it around Australia on our motorbikes. Still adjusting to the reality of being home, and we share with you the costs incurred along the road and begin planning our next adventure on new bikes.
FUEL: we forgot to mention how far we rode in the video, so after a couple of questions from viewers here is the approximate cost per km. $37.50/day for two bikes over 16,000km x 2 = $0.11/km.

As well as keeping our small group of vicarious travellers entertained, we make these Vlogs in honour of our Future Selves, who will one day be unable to physically cash the cheques our minds might desire to write. We will hopefully thank our Past Selves for going to all the effort of filming and editing, so that our then Present Selves can relive these wonderful adventures. We hope that we might inspire others to get out of their own way, get moving, be silly, have fun, and be yourself no matter what.
Thanks for watching!

I have enjoyed every single episode so. Thank you so much. Ironically I live in Onslow which I think was where you brought the most expensive fuel in the country. I have lived here 20 plus years and I don’t even buy my fuel here. I travel to Karratha regularly & buy bulk fuel, petrol & diesel & bring it home in Jerry cans. I am also a rider riding a Suzuki GSX-S1000 & am also a kiwi living in the Pilbara 34 years. Thank you again for the great & enjoyable series and look forward to watching more.

Hi Nic and Steve, The dollars certainly add up quickly when you’re on the road. Travelling tends to be expensive as your hand is always in your pocket. I can totally empathise with your mindset now that you’re home and not riding everyday. When my lovely wife and I returned home from just 6 weeks on the road it felt so mundane to be cutting lawns, getting groceries and cooking meals. It feels fantastic to pack a motorcycle and ride to new places everyday. I was surprised how much I missed it once we got home. I have to say that your fuel costs were a lot cheaper than I was expecting. When we travelled it was costing us close to $50 to fill our 2 bikes at every fuel stop. We easily spent $2,000 and we were only on the road for half the time you travelled….but we ride two big bmw’s. Thanks for sharing your experience, advice and wisdom. Looking forward to watching your next adventure on the Triumphs 👍📸🎥📺. Ride safe. Cheers, Peter.

Thanks once again for sharing...enjoy your new bikes.

Hi guys, just wanted to say thanks for not just the entertainment you’ve provided, but also the inspiration. My wife & I, (who are about the same age as you guys), live in WA and stumbled on your channel when considering riding over East. It was your Nullarbor episode we watched initially, not realising it was part of your “Big Lap”. Of course we were hooked and now we’ve watched everything you’ve done. We have our own channel “Handlebars and Holidays” and to date it’s not really featured much in terms of bike holidays, but you’ve given us a great insight into what to expect and the confidence to plan our first, (long for us) trip, which will be in October this year, when we plan to ride the Nullarbor and spend the month exploring pastures new over your way. We’ll obviously film & upload as you’ve done and it’s be great to think you might subscribe and follow along on our trip too. Just in case it seems strange, I initially I subbed from my private account, but I’ve just subbed from our H&H account as well, when we decided to touch base and say “Hi” ….. Take Care & Ride Safe ! ….. Carl & Angie “Handlebars and Holidays” 👍👍👍

Ohhhhh what a lovely message! So glad you’ve enjoyed our little series and even provided inspiration. We will definitely subscribe to your Channel and look out for your adventure. I’m working on a video over the next month…not sure how many episodes it will turn into…to document our next big adventure. We are moving to WA!! Unfortunately it will be too hot to ride too often in Newman 🤯🤣🥵 Stay tuned to see how it all works out. All the best, Nic & Steve 🏍️👍🏍️

What a great series (actually I'm only up to episode 32 but jumped ahead to see this). Thank you for the huge effort it must take to do this. You answered a couple of questions I had thought of but two that remain are: Did your phone ever overheat being exposed all the time (I have a similar setup but obviously don't ride those distances so quickly) and a more personal one - did you put on much weight by eating out every night for 3 months (and a having a beer or two every night - no judgement here!!! :) ). BTW, you have a beautiful home. Cheers, Geoff
@nowwatt
@nowwatt Жыл бұрын
Thanks Geoff! Just realised we hadn't responded to your comment. No, the phone never overheated, but I would recommend a vibration minimiser if you ever get a Quadlock. AND, regarding weight, I thought and felt like I'd put on weight but I didn't put any weight on at all. Was surprised. I think Steve put on a few kilos! Hope you are enjoying the rest of the videos. All the best, Nic & Steve

Just found your channel and working my way though S3, you may have covered this question somewhere, but in your opinion, which are the best two months to do this with less tourists. Enjoying the series and given great idea's on places to go, Thanks.
@nowwatt
@nowwatt Жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley, glad you found us! If you only have two months you’d be riding long days without much rest. We reckon August-September, but any pick of July-Aug-Sept will do the trick. The north needs to be dry so June-July-Aug best for there….but hoards of tourists. It’s cold and wet in the south, so Aug-Sept best for there, and less tourists. School holidays are good to avoid if possible. Enjoy 😊 Cheers, Nic & Steve

@@nowwatt 2 Months was a rough estimate, I Live in NZ so long days 500/600 k is normally harder on NZ roads, especially as we do not have many straight roads, Longer distances in Aus would be a bit easier. but thanks for the info

That was interesting. Going on your costs, a solo rider would probably still have the same accommodation cost but half of the rest so about $27000. You haven't included the price of 2 replacement bikes ha ha. Tiger 900 Rally/Pro, great choices. I did see your bikes for sale on Bikesales. Good luck, hopefully you can find a Qld buyer because it's a pain if buying from interstate. I was purchasing a Vstrom from Qld a few years ago and the only way is to buy it unregistered as your rules are only a Qld resident can cash in the registration. The seller ended up finding a local buyer because he wasn't keen to go through the faffing about.

Hi Jeff….just sold Ellie to a very happy buyer (they looked great together and yes, I had a few feelings!!) so hopefully Cooper will go to a Qld owner soon 👍 My Tiger is coming from Vic unregistered so we appreciate the ease of a local buyer! 😊

March/April 2021 I did a solo trip (2020 Honda CB500X) Vic. S.A. W.A. N.T. Only had annual leave so 13000 kms in 4 weeks. No camping, travelled very light, with top box for tools etc and valuables and drinks, with one bag strapped to seat for clothes. I rarely booked ahead for accommodation, usually going online at night to check a few options for the next day from booking sites. Most riding days were 800 kms plus so I usually didn't arrive until around 5pm. Some regional areas were heavily booked (coming out of covid lockdown W.A.) and prices were high. Often the cheaper rooms were all gone and I had to get larger/more expensive options, however at a few places I got a discount ($15-$20) when explaining I was solo, but others flatly refused. Prices were $95 to $250 per night. One small tip, after checking sites online, sometimes I Googled accommodation phone number, rang direct and got the room cheaper. Cost all up was just over $8000, which included a few touristy activities and some sessions at the pub. Hello Kalgoorlie! All in all, I spent what I spent, and as they say, "your worst day riding is still better than your best day at work". Cheers.

Are you'se going to keep the v-stroms? Or part swap them for the tigers.The tiger is more of a "power bike" step up.
@nowwatt
@nowwatt Жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis….no, Vstroms have to go to new homes to help with cost. I would love to have kept ALL my old bikes! I get very attached. Now that we understand our propensities on the bikes, The Tigers are a better ergonomic setup for us on long rides (we are talk) and we do enjoy the Highway riding. It was the ride home from Uralla and the desire to keep riding that made us explore a change. Ellie has just found her new home, and I’m sure Cooper’s new owner isn’t far away 🤞 Cheers, Nic

@@nowwatt Cheers Nic.Yeah,I can understand that the long distance travelling that you both do is the main reason for a step-up. When I bought my '17 strom almost 5 years ago the dealer let me test-ride 3 bikes,one of them was a tiger(triple cylinder)but I found it abit intimidating.I'm keeping my v-strom which I use for w/e tours,commuting etc because it's just what I do.Anyway,all the best,Den.
@nowwatt

@@coconuciferanuts339 I completely get it! Intimidating is the right word....so I'm hoping the Tiger and I will become good friends eventually. It's all in my head! I named my first Tiger, Richard Parker, after the Tiger in "The Life of Pi" for the simple reason that if you spend time with a Tiger, it deserves your respect 😉
