Agree on the snorkels for the most part. I usually use mine at the start of the dive for a surface swim or in chop waiting on other divers simply so I don’t use up my gas. I also manually inflate my BCD at the surface before and after the dive for the same reason. Don’t waste gas, save it for the dive.

Snorkels are for snorkeling. They are just another item for dive shops to sell to divers that they will never use. In my opinion snorkels can even be a liability. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen new divers reach for their inflator hose and keep grabbing the snorkel instead. Very dangerous during an ascent.

I’ve seen it to- they cause more problems than they create for most recreational divers (u less the site genuinely requires it) - so I’m with ya ✅

Listening to a former Navy seals experience of Navy dive training, kind of reminds me of a military experience of my own in cold war times Germany. There was an exercise that our officer thought it would be a good idea to jump in from the sky. We were tank crews, not special forces. fortunately, I had previously jumped at 18 years old, with my then girlfriend; having done a weekend course with the British school of parachuting, The first day spent half learning what to expect and what to do if things go wrong, the second half in a gym being taught how to land correctly, the next day you make the jump from 5000 feet, a camera mounted on the wing takes your mug shot on the way out; a rope attached to your chute deploys it when safely away from the plane, you drift down and land safely. Now imagine a Troop of around 26 guy's given a 10 minute talk on a tarmac; loaded into a British Hercules aircraft, probably taken up to way higher than my first civilian jump, "it sure looked it", clipping the rope on and jumping out of the back of that thing. Miraculously, nobody was harmed and the exercise went without hitch. It just makes me laugh how civil rules in so many recreational areas are so tight, but Military say nope, we don't need any of that.

Recently signed up for open water and was surprised by the other $350 worth of stuff I had to buy including a snorkel and short smb they said I’d never use again. I also did the Elearning and test for NAUI in one day. I did get a Scubapro mask so I guess Im awesome 😂

Take a rollable soft snrokel (Mares makes one, not sure if Scubapro does ;) ). Attach it to your gear in a way it doesn't disturb (to your waist d-ring, with single-ender boltsnap for example). You can take it once in lifetime when it happens that you are actually lost at sea after dive. It will save your life ... if you'r lucky. PS: You don't need to "save air" on surface pre-dive because you are doing recreational tourist dives (topic of this video) and will never get even close to running out of air. If you think you could be running out of air already pre-dive do not dive at all.

Great video, I like my snork for pre-dive surface floating while everyone gets in the water; I think it keeps me from talking to people and getting a mouth full of salt water????, maybe it's a bad habit, might check out the roll-up.

Cost is a big factor on gear choice I like my Hollis K2, but wouldn't mind trying x deep BCD if I had plenty of money to buy both of them. Hell if I had plenty of money I would try everything 😂 then give my unbiased opinion.

I'd have to agree with the snorkel thing; as a breathold spearfisher, I've always got one on, since I use it when I'm on the surface to scout fish (assuming there's actually some viz). I wish it weren't attached when I dive though., and you sure don't want it in your mouth on the way up, only to have to clear the thing before you even take a breath. The only question I'd have for Ed though, is, did you guys name the log? He'd understand.

I don't dive with a snorkle personally but for some reason I own 6 .. as for scubapro personally I don't have any because where I live nobody realy sells it where I am from . I think you buy the brand that your local dive shop sells on the most part. And once your more into it or get to know where you want to this journey is going then you adapt your gear to it.

Agreed. If you asked me what regs are the best I would say atomic. If you asked me why I couldn't tell you because it's what my dive shop sold me when I started and I haven't used any other brands on any of my dives to compare them to.

I like to wear my snorkel . Uk diver only passed open water a few months . Find swimming to buoy lines on boat dives saves my air ( im not good at long dives on a single tank yet ) most my dives are drift dives so the boat is not always right on me as multiple oairs of divers in the water . Can see in blue water diving in tropic countries it would not be needed . Love your content and channel. Big shout out from ymthe u.k

What is the big deal of somebody other than your self using a snorkel? It's like the split fins discussion, dictating other peoples what to use. In 30+ years of diving I have never had any issue with my snorkel, in the other hand I find it quite comfortable to use it at the surface. Not even GUE restricts you from using a snorkel
@TheScubaDivingChannel
@TheScubaDivingChannel 6 ай бұрын
Nobody restricts you, and if you like it, just use it. Like I said in the video, as long as people understand why. We’ve also watched them create more problems than they typically solve for most recreational divers who are just wearing them because they think they have to. There’s a reason people who lead dives and do it professionally almost never wear them, unless a situation requires it 👌

Yes, I don't understand why I still have to keep a snorkel when one is in the certification process. 🤿🤿🤿🤿🤿🤿🤿🤿
