@@benholroyd5221Having been different for the better part of 73 years, my observation is many, many people find "different" to be annoying and some even consider "different" DANGEROUS. I use music, especially Jug Band Music, to help me find people who are annoyed or threatened by "different". Almost anything from Dr West"s Medicine Show and Junk Band, John Sebastian, Norman Greenbaum, very early Jesse Colin Young or the Grateful Dead will set them off. Back in the 19and70's, while driving my bright orange Hillman Minx (Series VI) on the Garden State Parkway, I was pulled over by some number of New Jersey State Troopers with guns drawn, pulled from my car and strip searched (including cavity inspection) in broad daylight on the roadway after some "normal" someone had reported hearing the song "Weird", by Norman Greenbaum coming from the speakers of my 8 track. Yeah ... I'M weird. Remind me to tell you about my weird and confusing adventures in the US and A Army back in the day. Like ... if you didn't WANT me, then why the hell did you TAKE me? My next door neighbor had a 1st gen Insight that she bought brand new when I was a kid. At the time she had a pretty sizable daily commute that was about 75% freeway and she averaged 65-70+mpg with it for many many years. She loved that little car. She had the original hybrid battery replaced around 150k miles when they were still available, but by time that one failed somewhere north of 325k they were no longer available and the car was parked. Had I known how simple the packs actually are, I might have been interested in trying to fix it, but unfortunately that car is long gone.

The AF ratio can get down to 22:1 in this car thanks to that extra sensor. It has a second, special cat to adsorb the pollution from lean burn and periodically burns it off. I love the auto engine cutoff, the car gets so quiet. It'll cut off when you put the car into neutral below a certain speed (I think it's around 15 to 20mph). The electric motor starts the engine back up smoothly and nearly instantly when you put it from neutral back into gear. It won't auto-shutoff if the engine's still cold, or if the AC is on (unless you select 'ac off' mode on the climate control), and the engine will start up again (possibly briefly) if the brake boost vacuum gets too weak. Steering is fully electric so you don't lose power steering either.

I remember you saying the stuff came back to life after you found the rodent damage. you'd think after all the years it's been a problem they might use insulation the mice didn't like to chew on. But at least, besides having to tear out the dash, it's an easy fix, and likely lowered the price of the car tremendously. glad you got it worked out.

Luckily JimBo did not show the necessary cleanup prior to repairing the wires as, speaking from experience, it can be something that one needs a hazmat suit for. I have a 2003 Civic Hybrid with the 5 speed transmission. I got it a couple years ago with about 125k on it. I commute 40 miles to work every day and love the fuel economy, even though it's a bit off the 51 mpg estimate at a bit over 40. I know it would be better if I kept the speed down heading into work, but 40 mpg at the speed limit for my area is still pretty good. First time I got in it and turned the key, I wasn't expecting the IMA motor to start the engine. In the time I've had it, I think it's used the physical starter only a couple times. Also, with the auto stop, at least for my Civic, I have a button labeled econ, that, when turned off manually or forced off by running the defroster, will disable the auto stop feature. I typically leave it on and will just wait at traffic lights in 1st if I want to keep it (and the AC) running. One other interesting feature I've found is that if it stalls when taking off from a stop, I can restart it by shifting out of 1st/reverse and back without touching the key.

It'd be so cool to figure out a way to assemble a Li battery pack for one of these Insights that is the same weight or maybe a touch bigger, that can be plugged in and see how that would effect the performance and economy, maybe even figure out how to use bigger more powerful electric drive motors for better performance, re-gen and range in conjunction with the a modern Li battery pack made with 18 650 cells. Years ago I leased a Ford Focus Electric for the tax incentives in GA for my g/f to drive to work with. I always wanted to get one cheap and put an LS4 5.3L V8 attached to an F40 6 speed manual transaxle in the rear of one of those cars. It would be perfect because all the accessories are handled by the existing electric drive system, AC, power steering, vacuum for the brakes, that car was liquid cooled for the batteries and the LS4 doesn't have a provision for a starter on the engine, it was attached to the auto transmission, so when attached to the F40 I would just get the car moving electrically, trun on the ignition, put it in gear and dump the clutch to start the engine. Also that car comes up as emissions exempt even in the most environmentally strict states so, I could port the heads, do a huge cam, up compression, long tube headers, no cats, use a sideways pancake dual in dual out muffler behind the rear bumper, the engines could be a bit high strung since low speed driving can be done all electric and it would have torque fill accelerating using the front electric motor and the engine at the same time.

Great episode on the stock Honda Impact. When you get the diesel Impact finished, you could get another driver and have a drag race 🎉 Wonder which car would win🤔

I have a cheapie Bluetooth dongle that uses a free app. It shows basic data and can clear codes. I'm intrigued to see what a $350 diagnostic tool can do compared to $1000+ diagnostic tools I've used before.

I've got a 2000 Honda HR-V and the starter signal is the same on that. The signal from the key goes to the ECU. It has regular gasoline engine, not a hybrid, so it might have been a design choice that Honda made for multiple models.

Also, I got an Autel MaxiSYS 808BT (I think) fairly recently. Very handy to have a professional level tool when you're working with modern vehicle elctronics. Personally I got it to verify the fuel sync on my 2000 Ram with a 5.9 magnum engine after the rebuild.

I'm not sure which model my brother has specifically but that thing is handy! His is an Autel as well, I should clarify. It's been a sweet piece of kit, he's had it going on a year maybe?

Leave it to a Rodent to only find and chew up the starter and fuel pupm wires in a harness behind the dash... Its amazing that the Hybrid stuff still works after not being in the car for years. Battery must be robust and not care that much.

I owned the same gen insight. Make sure to take note of the battery charge if you keep the ima computer system. It will slowly discharge the lawn mower battery under the hood if it throws the dreaded ima code. How I got around it was unplugging one the computers in that battery pack that would cause it to throw a different code(forgot which one). I drove the car a year safely after that until that secondary starter wore out and I had to push start the car at random times. Also being a manual I had the dreaded input shaft bearing failure that's also common on all the Hondas during these years. I also remember cleaning out all the carbon in that intake sandwich plate which helped the car stay in lean burn mode. All in all I loved the car just literally everything was going bad at once. I later on bought a 2019 insight and drove all over the country in that vehicle. Vehicle sadly got totalled in a rear end collision and now I have a 2022 accord hybrid. All have been great vehicles, love my Hondas. Love your videos! Haven't missed an episode in years! Wish you could get your hands on an old gm ev1 if the government didn't smash all of them 😢

When I drove my insight back in the early 2k, it took a long time but 107 mph was as fast as it would go. And as the IMA battery ran down 93 mph on level ground was it. No, it's no rocket ship. But I achieved 70 mpg on the highway and 62 mpg around town. I lived in NJ at the time. Mostly flat, but if I lived in lets say NE PA with the steep mountain roads, the 73 hp (with the IMA BATTERY POWER)of the Insight will not ( as I say ) pull the skin off a bowl on RICE PUDDING!!!! LOL😂. Like most of my rides, I wish I never sold it.
