A bee’s brain is tiny, but its one million neurons make shockingly complex connections. Individual bee and bumblebee intelligence is phenomenal, from spatial memory to communication. And would you believe that bees are likely also capable of play? Two leading researchers paint a compelling picture of just how much we’ve underestimated the individual sentience of bees. The stereotype of the bee as a robot fully dependent on the hive is far from accurate. We explore fascinating bee research involving harmonic radar, machine learning, and AI-in an effort to see the world through the eyes of a bee.
Guests:
Lars Chittka, professor of Sensory and Behavioral Ecology at Queen Mary University of London and author of "The Mind of a Bee"
Tim Landgraf, professor of Machine Learning and Robotics at the Free University Berlin

Emotions on Insects: I suppose it depends slightly on your definition of these emotions. But I have always said yes, absolutely, any create that DOES ACTIONs feels the emotions that drive them to do those actions. What makes a bee hunt for pollen? the same reason I enjoy sweets. I enjoy sweets, the bee enjoys pollen. These are necessary traits for life. Desire, avoidance... Even the lowly single celled organism 'feels' what is wants, and what it dislikes when it bumps into other things. It feels 'pain' and recoils away, it feel pleasure and consumes when it finds something it 'likes'. A virus, which is arguably not life, 'feels' that it has reached a suitable host, or 'feels' that something is not suitable. These are positive/negative driving forces, that we call emotion. playing, and learning are more complex emotions for sure. Pleasure and Pain are the core necessities though.

The bee sees those thousands of images as 1. They are sort of like pixels and they combine to form one image.
