The "Bismarck" , and his sister ship "Tirpitz", were the 2 largest battleships ever built in Europe (250 meters long, 36 meters wide, and displacing more than 50.000 tones) and they were the pride of the kriegsmarine (Germany's militari navy) during Ww2. The "Bismarck" set sail in May 1941 to reach the Atlantic and destroy merchant convoys, but he was intercepted by the British and during a brief fight, destroyed the former flagship of the British fleet and pride of the Royal Navy, the worldwide famous battlecruiser "Hood", by penetrating her armor and detonating her aft main ammunition magazine and killing all 1900 members of her crew except for 3 men, and heavily damaged the battleship "Prince of Wales". This enraged the prime minister Winston Churcil who ordered all his ships in the Atlantic to abandon their operations and destroy the Bismarck. In total more than 40 ships participated to the hunt, making it the biggest naval hunt in history. Meanwhile Bismarck, who had received a hit during the first battle, was leaking fuel and was trying to reach the French port of Saint Nazaire, in occupied France, for repair. After 6 days of playing cat and mouse with the British, Bismarck was attacked by airplanes launched from the aircraft carrier "Ark Royal" and hit by a torpedo in the stern, which jammed his rudders during evasive manuvers, meaning that he was forced to sail in circles, just a few miles away from reaching air cover. In the end battleships "King George V" and "Rodney", along side the heavy cruisers "Norfolk" and "Dorsedshire" fought the already doomed battleship and, during the following 90 minutes completely destroyed it. However, despite having all his guns destroyed, and having received more than 400 hits (out of the 2800 shells that the British had fired at it) his armor was still mostly intact and the ship was still afloat. So the british launched another 4 torpedoes and he disappeared beneath the waves. After inspection of the wreck however it had been discovered that the torpedoes did no significant damage thanks to the battleship's excellent armor, and that Bismarck had been scuttled by his crew (although it should be noted that many historians believe that it would have eventually sunk due to the damage received). Of the 2200 men that served on it, only 114 survived. The old man seen in the video is the son of the last survivor, who died in 2018, 1 year before this song was released

Sabaton is really something. It's always interesting to see people hearing them for the first time. I think the most powerful song they have ever made is the swedish version "Livstid I krig" and it must be the gothenburg live performance. Dont forget the subtitles so you can understand what they sing

Greetings from the UK! Don't feel bad about not having heard of these bands - I've lived in England for nearly 20 years (born in Scotland, grew up in New Zealand,) and only heard of Nightwish in 2019. Prior to that my opinion of modern music was very low. After losing my heart and soul to the Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen, I began exploring stunningly epic European bands that I had flat out missed, including Sabaton.. I am nearly 50, so getting close to be able to convicingly say I'm old. I'm very glad that I have started to explore this music when I did.

Nightwish played at the Sweden Rock Festival yesterday... 😉 Sadly I wasn't there, but I live not too far away. This year it was only Amaranthe and Nightwish that caught my interest. And maybe Guns'n Roses...

In March of 1935 my one of grandfathers was a fresh out of collage Electrical Engineer and took a great job at the Bloom and Voss shipyards. He was one of the chief designers of a new radar direct Fire control system that would be put abord Bismarck and his sister ship Tirpitz. In 39 he was to join the ships compony and go out for his fitting out and sea trials then be entered in as one of his engineering officers. He would survive and be imprisoned in Northern Ireland for the rest of the war. I never got to meet him, but I did get to hear some of the journals and see some of the pictures he had before they were donated and used by Dr Ballard to locate him. To his dying day he was adamant that he was not sunk by the British but that they had no reason to feel any less proud for their efforts. He was one of the few that were able to tell the expeditions what the condition of the ship would be when they found him. Total lack of explosive decompression or hull deformation from internal venting. He said that he knew all or most of the scuttling charges where lit by the time he went over bord. BTW he hated Oscar/Sam because he was allergic to cats and yet it was he that helped the cat survive. Want to hear a real story of survival That Cat used up all 9 plus some. Bless and be well and great reaction.

Great reaction , one side note , Hitler actualy had forbiden the use of Bismarck to be used as a commerce raider . The german navy actualy was afraid that the the upcomming campaign would set all focus on the land and airfoce production . So they send Bismarck on patroll with out even telling Hitler to show prevent budget cuts and cancelation of the Z plan. when he heard of it he went in to a major meltdown as it was to late to recal Bismarck he reluctantly agreed . If they had waited 3 more months Tirpitz would be operational as well . one of those things when a triger happy admiral was afraid of loosing resources .

It's not so much that the guns couldn't reach the swordfish though of course that's a tactic to get low before most of the guns its that the AAguns on the Bismark were designed to hit bigger and more armored aircraft the ammo they had when it hit the swordfish went right through instead of exploding on average plus it was a dark morning I think so even worse optics really though the British got incredible lucky. That ship was sunk only due to charges set by its own crew which was confirmed a few years ago all those torpedoes just couldn't break it if the rudder hadn't been damaged it could have caused so much havoc changed the war no but could have made it a lot worse
@reliantncc1864
@reliantncc1864 2 жыл бұрын
That is really not true. Rodney had 16" gun impacts on Bismarck's underside because Bismarck was listing that far. This is before any scuttling charges were set off. As far as the rudder damage goes, that's largely because the ship design prevented differential thrust from the propellers from being able to steer the ship effectively. And Tirpitz proves a battleship or two doesn't overcome the massive advantage the Royal Navy had.
