Another awesome touch is referring to the Bismark as He instead of she because when Hitler toured it under construction he declared that it was a he because it was so powerful (which by Mariner tradition doomed the ship)

No, it doesn't mean that at all. It's just that the commanding officer felt that as this was such a mighty, uber-powerful ship the traditional pronoun (she/her) would not do it justice and instructed the crew to use he/him instead. My fave Sabaton track!

Never heard of this before. To my knowledge the only ship to be officially male was the Kaiser Wilhelm II. German is a gendered language, much like Spanish. So the Kaiser Wilhelm instead of just ship, was always referred to as steamer, since that in German is a male term.

To be fair, heavy metal had just been invented around the time you were a teen, back the early forms was called "hard acid rock" and apparently it was really popular in certain units that fought in the Vietnam War. Yeah I saw quite a few documentaries on the early days of heavy metal.

Of the HMS Hood's complement of 1,421 crewmen, only 3 survived their engagement with the Bismarck. It took a salvo in the aftward section and one of the shells penetrated a magazine, detonating the rear of the ship and sinking the vessel in around three minutes. War is indeed hell.

For those who want to know : there was a cat on the boat. He survived when it sinked, and got taken by the british. And then he survided to the doom of two other boats after, and received the nickname of "Sam the unsinkable cat". That right, one of the most famous survivor of the Bismark is a cat who died in UK 14 years after his first steps on a boat. That explains a lot... Germans wanted to get their cat back.

Actually this isn't true, it's just a rumour as the destroyer said to have picked it up was in convoy duty at the time and was about 300 miles to the north west of where the cat was said to be picked up.

One thing I found when I read about Bismarck caught my interest and it is in fact a really interesting story! From when Bismarck first set sail, it always had a ship cat onboard, which original name given by the Germans is unknown. The cat was supposedly owned by an unknown crewman, but was seen as Bismarcks ship cat by almost the entire crew. The cat was on the ship during the entire battle of the Denmark Strait and of course also on board when Bismarck sank. It managed to survive the sinking and a few hours later, the cat was found floating on a board and picked up from the water by the British destroyer HMS Cossack. The British sailors named him Oscar. HMS Cossack returned to the Mediterranean sea where it went on escort duties. On 24 October 1941, Cossack was escorting a convoy from Gibraltar to Great Britain when it was hit by a torpedo fired from U-563, after which it was towed towards Gibraltar but eventually sank after a huge explosion. Again, Oscar survived, and was brought to shore at Gibraltar and then tranferred to the Aircraft Carrier HMS Ark Royal. When the captain of HMS Ark Royal saw Oscar, he allegedly said something like: "Is that the cat from the battleship Bismarck ? He is more than welcome onboard the Ark Royal!" At this point the cat got known by the new nickname "Unsinkable Sam", as a reference to the cat's luck after surviving two sinkings. But then, on 14 November 1941 Ark Royal too was torpedoed, this time by U-81 and sank around 30 miles from Gibraltar. Oscar managed to survive once again, and he was picked up and transferred to HMS Lightning and then to the same HMS Legion which had rescued the crew of HMS Cossack. HMS Legion would itself be sunk in 1942, and HMS Lightning in 1943. Oscar now, quite fairly, had gained a certain reputation of being extremely unlucky, and was therefore not allowed on another ship again and instead he was transferred first to the offices of the Governor of Gibraltar and then sent back to the United Kingdom, where he saw out the remainder of the war living in a seaman's home in Belfast called the "Home for Sailors". Oscar died in 1955.

Nice to see that no one seems to have a problem with the Bismarck and German soldiers. I remember when I studied in Los Angeles they some time tested me bad just because I was German-always these nazi stories. I proudly answered them that my grandfather served under Erwin Rommel in Africa, later then he jumped off over Crete (he was a paratrooper). After this his aircraft got shot and they crashed into the Mediterranean Sea where he managed to survive ed three days. He then got rescued and came back to Berlin. It is those’d stories that you hear when you are little and don’t understand what it actually means. Thanks to Sabaton bringing it up without negative connotation or anti German propaganda.

People forget or choose not to remember why ww2 kicked off in the first place. The German people were force to pay impossible reparations for ww1 and were starving from it. Then comes Hitler who promised a job for every man, a chicken in every pot, and was very charismatic. It wasn't just entirely because of the Jewish element, that wasn't even discovered until near the end of the war. How many thousands of German soldiers were fighting for what they thought was right and knew nothing of the genocide taking place? Idk it'd be cool to hear the stories and not immediately judge them because of which side they fought on. We don't judge the Japanese nearly as harshly and they did HORRIBLE things to p.o.w.s and the Chinese. I guess since we unleashed the power of the sun and bombed them from a warrior nation to a Manga nation, we don't feel the need to remember their crimes.
