The old man is Bernhard Leuer, he was the last remaining survivor of Bismarck, a few hundred germans where rescued but at the time of making this video Leuer was the only one still alive, he was really given that compass by his captain when they sunk, sadly Leuer passed away shortly after the making of this clip in his mid 90ties. God save all those old veterans, allies or axis.

@@EnDSchultz1 This is from the surviving history forum: Bernhard Heuer, the last surviving crewmember of the infamous German battleship, the Bismarck passed away Thursday 8 March 2018 at the age of 95. Heuer was the last living member of 114 Kriegsmarine sailors to survive the sinking of the Bismarck and its last living crewmember. He was an 18 year old Matrose (Sailor) at the time of the sinking of the ship and was rescue by crewmembers of the British warship HMS Dorsetshire. Following the Battle of Denmark Strait, the Royal Navy closed in on the Bismarck and opened fire on the Bismarck. By 1000 Bismarcks guns were silenced. Nearly 3,000 shells were fired at Bismarck during the fight. Most of Bismarcks crew were trapped inside as the battleship rolled over. 400 German sailors would make it off the Bismarck. The Dorsetshire would rescue 85 men, HMS Maori rescued 25 more before rescue operations were abandoned when lookouts spotted what they believed was a German U-Boat. A U-Boat did later venture upon the scene and rescue three and a trawler rescued two more. Of the original 2,200 man crew, 400 made it into the water and only 114 survived.

Fun fact: Sabaton used the pronoun "he" for the ship in the song because the Bismarck was one of the few ships not to be called "she". The captain believed that he was too big and powerful to have a feminine pronoun.

Let me fill you in on Sabaton a little bit my friend TL. They’re a Power Metal band from Sweden and they write music about military history and heroism in battle. This song is about the German Battleship called The Bismarck. It was one of the largest and most dangerous Warships during WW2 and it sank many British ships including the H.M.S Hood which was the best ship in the entire British Royal Navy. It was the Pride of the German Fleet and one of Hitler’s Super Weapons.

Sabaton is a great band their songs are mostly influenced about military history but not all of them. I also really like Sabaton because they are one of the few popular bands out there that are playing traditional heavy metal. Most popular metal bands now are either Hardcorde/Screamo or Black/Death metal. There are bands still playing traditional metal but most are not popular. It's good to see that traditional metal can still be played and gets lots of views, sell out arenas, and young people will still dig it.

For anyone wondering. The Bismarck was a ship that Germany made, it was the most advanced ship ever made at that time being one of the only ships with sonar and of size, being able to hit ships well at 7 miles away. It sank the Hood, Britain's pride, called the unsinkable, and injured another ship. And after that happened, Churchill himself sent out a message to the entire Navy with 3 words. "Sink the Bismarck". After that it was almost a week long hunt to find the Bismarck. After they did, it took a small fleet, and 15 bombers to take the ship down. After a 2 day battle, with the ships steering destroyed and it's guns not working the crew decided to scuttle the ship so as to not give Britain the satisfaction of a victory. Also: It was named after Otto Von Bismarck shortly after he died British soldiers rescued crew members of the Bismarck after they sank it A cat had survived the sinking of the Bismarck and was named 'Unsinkable Sam' And Because of a bad fog, the British had bombed their own ships more than once thinking it was the Bismarck

Sabaton is how you pronounce it I believe. They spray painted primo Victoria which is one of there albums. This song was a promotion ad for world of warships the second game of wargaming the first one was world of tanks. At the beginning you should here a ad talking about a ship name the hood at the frist spottings of the bismark the British thought the hood was the best battle ship to take down the bismark. The bismark was the sister ship of the kisgmarine which at the beginning of world war two was the biggest and most terrifying ship until the bismark came along and it could take torpedoes and not be damaged. What did took down the bismark was a sword fish (a type of torpedo) that struck the roater ( a spinning fan on the back of the ship that helps turn the ship) so the bismark only went in circles and when that happened the allied ships mainly great Britains took turns firing at the ship until it sunk. The kigsmarine and other greman ships and u boats (aka submarines) was supposed to get the bismark from wherever into the sweet open Atlantic ocean to destroy American supply ships that was heading to and from the usa and Britain. Sabaton is a rock type band and most of there songs are about wars if I would have to suggest another song from them it well had to be the last stand, hell and back, great war.

Unfortunately, your comments are full of inaccuracies. I can appreciate the sentiment, though. First, the British did not think the Hood was the best ship to take down the Bismarck, they just didn't have much else to send at the time. The Hood was frighteningly overdue for a refit, as her engines were falling apart and new shell technology had overtaken her armor setup. She was meant to go into refit to update her, but it didn't happen before the Battle of the Denmark Strait. Bismarck the biggest and most terrifying? Eh, possibly. But at the same time, Bismarck was the biggest at the time partially because the Germans were still relearning how to build capital ships after being forbidden doing so after WW1. They needed the extra tonnage to accomplish their goals. So other nations had ships under construction or in final design that were more powerful (16 in. guns vs 15 of the Bismarck), as well protected or better, and as fast or faster. It didn't help that one of those things the German shipbuilders had forgotten is that you need to put your control cables under the armor, because they didn't, so a shell could easily cut fire control cables, etc. Not to mention the Bismarck's own guns would interfere with her radar because of that lack of shielding. To be fair, the British wouldn't have known that at the time. You are correct that the torpedo protection system (aka torpedo bulges) did their jobs very well. She was definitely a tough ship. I feel it should be noted that the Prince of Wales (who was with the Hood when she sank) was actually slightly newer than the Bismarck and was arguably better armored, although not quite as fast as the Bismarck on paper. She had 10 14-inch guns to Bismarck's 8 15-inch guns since the British had built them to comply with naval treaties (which the Germans didn't care about), yet she did damage the Bismark in a way that would seriously affect Bismarck later. At least one hit took out a fuel storage, which limited Bismarck's options after the fight. It didn't help that, as a brand new battleship, the Prince of Wales hadn't even finished finding all the problems in its gun turrets. They actually had technicians from Vickers (the manufacturer of the guns) on board during the battle because they had been trying to fix more problems. That turned out to be a very good thing because the PoW's guns kept malfunctioning. I believe that, at one point in the battle, only 1 of the 6 forward guns was operational. Yikes. A swordfish was not a torpedo, it was the torpedo bomber that launched the torpedo. It didn't strike the propeller (I'm guessing that's what you mean by a rotor), it struck near the back of the hull, which jammed the rudder control (maybe you meant rudder, not rotor?) Please don't take this as anything more than providing accurate details.

The Bismark was one of, if not the most, powerful ships during the second World War. It sank the the Hood, which was the pride of the British Navy at the time, and was later taken out after several bombing runs and a fair number of ships finally cornered it. The Bismark took thousands of rounds on its thick armored super structure and was critically wounded before two point blank torpedoes were fired into its hull. This was the last straw for the Germans on the ship who began to evacuate. Some were trapped, others managed to get off the ship only to die in the cold waters as the Allied forces saved only a few before they began to sail away. They did this because someone sighted what was thought to be a U-boat in the area, and Germans had kept U-boats near sinking ships before to take out ships in the past. Fun fact- the ship was named after one of the most awesome and insane men in German history who, to my mind, helped create the great country and wouldn't have been formed without him.

The Video is a cooperration between Sabaton and Wargaming (World of Warships and World of Tanks) Short background Story about Bismarck: It was one of two Bismarck-Class Battleships build by the german Kriegsmarine (eng. "War Navy"). In it's short lifespan it was the biggest and most feared battleship in europe and was build to hunt down Allied Convoys in the Atlantic. Together with KMS Prinz Eugen they tried to break through the british lines to reach the open sea undetected. But they failed and got enforced by HMS Hood (Battlecruiser, Pride of the british navy) and HMS Prince of Wales (Battleship). After a few Salvos the Hood got destroyed by a fatal hit to the magazine. The following explosion ripped Hood in half and only 3 of 1418 men survived. Prince of Wales retreated after recieving heavy damage. Bismarck was also hit several times and suffered damage to a tank. It was decided to return to France to carry out repairs. Prinz Eugen was detached and returned back home. Meanwhile the news about the sinking of the mighty Hood reached London and Churchill ordered every available ship to hunt down the german Battleship. 6 Battleships and Battlecruisers, 2 Aircraft Carriers, 13 cruisers and 21 Destroyers. Bismarck was spotted by british WW1 Torpedo Bombers (Swordfish, Biplane) and got hit by a single torpedo near the rudder wich was jammed from now on, forcing Bismarck to sail in circles. The british ships closed in and fired over 2800 shells at the Battleship. After hundreds of direct hits the Bismarck was scuttled by its own crew. Out of 2200 crew members only 114 men survived. Sorry If I made any mistakes, english is not my first language 🙈

Quite corect tho spoting of Bismarck was quite a lucky 1 tho. Also note that Ship did recive trmendous ponding and German crew still fought back and it was not sink by Allyes but by satchel charges to be blown up to not get into British hands. Bismarck was a power to be reckoned with even tho it had its flaws but I get sad to hear such a beast got sunk in war.

First off....it's (Sahh-buh-t-on)...Sabaton... But yea...their video production really just is that good. They focus on historical data and stories for their music. In this particular case for example...the Bismarck was built to lead the Axis navy in WW2. A nine-day battle finally sunk the Bismarck...but it sank the HMS Hood before it did. The Bismarck battleship was in service for less than a year...but definitely put in some work before it reached it's final resting place...at the bottom of the Atlantic. Definitely check out "Fields of Verdun". Video is intense...and the actual battle of Verdun was insane. I'd recommend at least a brief read on the historical aspect before watching the video. It'll help you connect.

Sab(like sad)-Uh-Tawn. Also, they are a historic metal/power metal band from Sweden. Their songs are about wars, battles, and notable heroes from history. Mostly from World War 2, but as recent as Vietnam and the Korean War and as far back as the Spartans and ancient Rome. The Bismark was a German Destroyed in WW2. Took part in three battles. The largest battleship ever made on earth at the time. Said to be unsinkable. Was also a bitch to find. British military members were at the launching of the Bismark, but had very little information other than the name and how large. It's weight broke war treaties set in WW1, weighing 40k tons. Difficulty tracking it, very few sightings of it, and all before WW2 broke out in the larger part of the world. The better part of 2 years was spent trying to find it, and sink it. Once it was found, it sunk 1 battleship, HMS Hood which was the love of Britain the most powerful and legendary at the time, and almost sunk 2 others which turned and ran. A little while later on the same day, six battleships and battlecruisers, two aircraft carriers, thirteen cruisers, and twenty-one destroyers all joined over a period of 3 hours to chase it down. In the chase, it took a torpedo to the side and two main battery shots to the front, slowing it due to loss of oil, fuel, and flooding. Over the next couple days, the chase took about 3 days, most of the allied ships had to head to allied ports to refuel. Most of the remaining allied ships couldn't converge on the Bismark fast enough once it was spotted again. Eventually, stand-off between Bismark and 4 or 5 allied ships started. A few hours before nightfall, attacks started. The Bismark took another torpedo to the side and one to one of the drive props, making it unable to spin and push the ship. Over night, the ships maintained sight on the crippled Bismark, but did not fire. Nearly as soon as there was light to see, the shooting started. Several main battery rounds hit the Bismark, killing most of the German soldiers onboard, crippling every battery, and eventually sinking the Bismark. The closest the Bismark got to sinking a second ship in this whole chase was a main battery shell exploding 3900 feet from one of the allied ships. The Bismark was huge, hard to find, and took a hell of a beating. Standing against several ships and hundreds of soldiers. Dozens of planes, dozens of torpedoes, and thousands in several-inch wide shells. An enemy ship, but well worth respect and marvel. Thankfully, most of the German soldiers were inexperienced or I'm sure it would have taken down several allied ships and quite possibly gotten away and been in use for several years, maybe even survive the war. I hate to be thankful for anything that happens in war, though.

This song is about the Battles of the Denmark Strait, which was one of several skirmishes of the ongoing Battle of the North Atlantic. It all started with the breakout of the battleship KMS Bismarck and heavy cruiser KMS Prinz Eugen from the Baltic Sea into the North Atlantic Ocean. British warships were put on alert to block the German ships from gaining access to the more open Atlantic Ocean. It was the Battle of the Denmark Strait where the heavy battle cruiser HMS Hood and the battleship HMS Prince of Wales engaged the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. The Hood was sunk after 3 minutes of battle when a shell from Bismarck hit and ignited the aft main powder magazine. Only 3 crew members of the Hood survived. The sinking of the Hood incensed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the Admiralty. Churchill ordered every available ship to hunt down Bismarck. 2 days later, Faerie Swordfish Torpedo planes from the carrier HMS Ark Royal found and attacked the Bismarck. Only one plane managed to damage the rudder and steering gear of the Bismarck. This slowed the Bismarck considerably and the ship could only turn using it's propellers. The following morning after ongoing harrassment of British destroyers throughout the night, Bismark was engaged by the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royall, British Battleships the HMS King George V and the HMS Rodney, the heavy cruisers HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Norfolk, the light cruiser HMS Sheffield, destroyers Cossack, Sikh, Zulu, Maori, Mashona, and Tartar, and the Polish destroyer ORP Piorun. After 100 minutes of battle and sustaining multiple hits from shells, torpedoes and deliberate scuttling by the Bismarck's crew, he sank.

The song is about Battleship Bismarck. At 52,000 tons he was the largest battleship to sail in the North Atlantic during WW2, and the pride of the Kriegsmarine, Hitler’s naval power. In May 1941, he sunk the HMS Hood, Britain’s flag battleship. After that a 3 day hunt for the Bismarck ensued. He was finally brought down when a swordfish bomber landed a torpedo hit on his rudder, and put the Bismarck into a perpetual turn, after which the entire northern fleet of the British navy descended upon Bismarck.

The Bismarck was a German battleship considered the pinacle of nazi german nautical enginnering, it weighed 41,700 tons of steel, had a crew over 2000 men, and had multiple layers of armor, being a foot thick in some areas. The bismarck sunk in 1941, bc a british torpedo hit it's rudder, making it so that the Bismarck sailed in big circles, and even sailing in circles, it putted up a massive fight, sinking multiple british ships, and claiming many british lives. The Bismarck was considered a sign of the German nautical strength and made many allies afraid of the sea.

The Bismarck (in board jargon: The Bismarck) was a battleship of the German Navy and formed the Bismarck class with its sister ship Tirpitz. At the time of its commissioning in August 1940 under the command of Captain Ernst Lindemann at sea, it was considered the world's largest and most powerful battleship. In May 1941 the Bismarck was sent together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen to the North Atlantic to wage a trade war there. Soon after the start of this mission, she sank the British battle cruiser Hood on Denmark Street. Three days later it sank even after a heavy battle against British Royal Navy units with most of its crew in the North Atlantic. The Bismarck is one of the best-known ships of the German Navy and is therefore the subject of numerous literary works, scientific and technical studies and model representations.

Bismarck, one of the largest/deadliest battleships ever constructed. The battle that sunk the German Bismarck involved mainly British Navy ships including 7 destroyers, 3 cruisers, 2 battleships, and an aircraft carrier, while the Bismarck had one escort, the battle cruiser Prinz Eugen. The battle lasted a few days and the main fighting at the end took nearly 2 hours of torpedoes and shelling to sink it. Ultimately, the Bismarck covered the escape of her escort, Prinz Eugen, and some deliberate scuttling finally sank the ship.

The general timeline for the _KMS Bismarck_ The _Bismarck_ was one of two _Bismarck_ class battleships launched by the German Navy at the beginning of WWII. They were two of the largest battleships built by any European nation. On May 24, 1941, _Bismarck_ and her escort encountered a pair of British warships, one of which was the battlecruiser _HMS Hood_ , the most prestigious and honored warship in the Royal Navy. After some shelling was exchanged, a lucky shot from the _Bismarck_ penetrated the _Hood’s_ armor and detonated a power magazine, blowing the battlecruiser in half and sinking it. As the sinking of this warship was a direct blow to the pride of Great Britain, Winston Churchill personally gave the order: “Sink the Bismarck!” What amounted to every Royal Navy asset in the Atlantic Ocean, including the aircraft carrier _HMS Ark Royal_ (which is in the video) gave chase, and after a three day chase and a very fierce battle and tremendous effort, _Bismarck_ was sunk on May 27, 1941. Her wreck would eventually be discovered in 1989 by the same oceanographer who discovered the _Titanic._

So fun historical tidbit: The Bismarck is regarded as one of the two hardest to kill warships in history that saw a full scale war. In a one on one engagement, it annihilated the HMS Hood, flagship of the British Navy during WWII, and the only reason the Allied ARMADA that was sent after it was able to catch it and eventually sink it was a lucky torpedo hit from a torpedo bomber that disabled the rudder, preventing her from navigating back to German waters. When the final battle did come, the Bismarck finally sank because the Germans scuttled her to prevent capture by the Allies. Years later when the wreckage was discovered, they found that less than 10 shots had penetrated the armor above the waterline and below the super structure. Many dents on the lower armor belt showed where her armor successfully deflected or bounced 14 inch shells from the British battleships that had engaged her.
