My great grandfather (paternal) was a Bombardier on the big guns, my maternal great grandfather was in the Cavalry and his brother was a Major. All survived but former lost a leg. All in the service of the British army, for a pointless war. Sabaton put this together with utter perfection.

American here. I salute the brave service of your family although, yes, it was pointless. "The Repair Shop" on the BBC. An elderly man brought in ravaged pieces of his grandfather's camera; he was an army photographer during WWI. I thought the request was hopeless, but the Shop restored the bits to working condition and threw in a brand-new leather belt for the army-issued buckle in the box. The poor man broke down crying on camera. The Great War - the War to End All Wars - accomplished nothing except to sow the seeds for the rise of Hitler and the even worse WWII, which reverberates to this day.

_"There was not a sign of life of any sort. Not a tree, save for a few dead stumps which looked strange in the moonlight. Not a bird, not even a rat or a blade of grass. Nature was as dead as those Canadians whose bodies remained where they had fallen the previous autumn. Death was written large everywhere."_ -Private R.A. Colwell, Passchendaele, January 1918.

I can't "like" because it's not right. This is horrific, and still over 100 years later we inflict this pain on our fellow humans. The current civil war in Ethiopia. "The Tigray race must be eliminated!" a soldier declared in National Geographic. Why do we do this to one another?
@merryrose6788 Жыл бұрын
@@cneterer It's behavior learned and thought to be expected. We will and must evolve out of war. Sure, paintball games, re-enactments. But no one can inflict violence on anyone else, that must be the new rule for humans.
@cneterer Жыл бұрын
@@merryrose6788 I know but I don't think we can evolve from this. It's like that old "Star Trek" episode where one race hated the other simply because one had a black face on the left and the other had a black face on the right. We will never completely eliminate violence because others who don't look or live or worship God as we do will keep being "the enemy" among smallminded people. I truly think right now with Putin crazed to destroy Ukraine only to save face that the British movie "Threads" may come to pass.
@merryrose6788 Жыл бұрын
@@cneterer Thanks for your thoughtful reply. Yes, I remember that old "Star Trek" episode, it was an insightful satire on human tendency to beware of the "other." Agree with you that we will never eliminate violence. Yet, we can contain it a bit. Laws were made, especially the Nuremberg Code. Trouble is when people forget the reason for these codes. If we love life, and love seeing people happy, and challenged, then we must redirect the destruction impulse. Earth is a pretty, precious miracle, and as Sam said in Two Towers, there's good in the world and it's worth fighting for. (yes, a paradox, more violence, a war to end war?). I'll have to watch "Threads." As for crazed tyrants, we have to tether them before they do so much damage. Our lives depend on people stopping violence.

My great grandfather was a orthodox jewish stormtruppen for the german empire, he loved the kaiser and the fatherland, it broke his heart when hitler committed his atrocities because he loved germany so much. WW1 in my opinion should of never happened, you can justify it with any reason but so much wrong was committed and so many people died for something so meaningless, todays world would've been 100x better if we never had a world war.
