Night witches are girls no older than 25 years old, this nickname was given to them by the Nazis. They were so called because they flew on wooden planes, these planes are not visible on the radar, they emit a very quiet hum for the plane and they cannot be seen in the night sky. The girls took advantage of this and attacked at night, dropping 150-200 kg of explosives at a time, they said that they could carry out several such bombings during the night. But since the sound can even slightly determine the location of the aircraft and get to guess, the “witches” did the tricky maneuver. Approaching the enemy’s shelter, they turned off the aircraft engine so that it was impossible to determine their location by sound, quietly dropped and dropped bombs, turned on the engine and flew away. The Germans heard a rumble in the distance, then it abruptly stopped. They were confused, like where did the plane go? They didn’t even expect Autors Sofi Ermolenko

Until the mass appearance of radars at the end of the war, this tactic worked. The first stealth developed by the Horton brothers, their project is the basis of the b-2. In addition, the theory of diffraction of radio waves in the 60s was developed by Professor Ufimtsev. since pure stealth is ineffective (the Professor also calculated the method of detection by corelation of data from several radars) in Russia, pure stealth is not applied. Ufimtsev went to the United States in the 80's and calculated the shape of the glider for the b-2 with horizontal planes, rather than the primitive chopped f-117. Pure stealth is not possible, so just reducing visibility is used in pakfa and F22.

@elusive6119

@@XxXDemonhunter Because the effective scattering area will change as the target moves relative to the locators, the target will be visible as a Christmas tree when maneuvering. It is only possible to reduce the visibility and, having found out the location of the locators of their model and frequency, calculate the most advantageous corridor for the attack, but in the presence of an integrated air defense system, it will register a moving anomaly (aberration of radio wave reflection), which will be identified using L-locators from several hundred km. This is very simplified. Stealth is relevant for cruise missiles and gliding bombs, against single targets that do not have modern shelled air defense systems. For aircraft, this technology is again applicable only in the framework of confrontation with a technically weak enemy, as a method of reducing the guaranteed detection distance for the use of weapons.

Yep. Real women fight back! Women role in war often gets pushed back and even ignored. We are often in the shadows, the spies, the scouts, and we move entire tides of war. Heck, one of America’s greatest spies in the field was a woman..... Initially the Nazis thought a female spy was laughable. By the end of the war, one was on Hitlers number 1 to kill list. Her code name? “The Lady Who Limps”. She had a prosthetic leg due to a hunting accident but she gathered intelligence like a boss and committed espionage like one does her nails. Even though the Nazis knew she “limped”, she always tricked them and escaped via cunning or disguise. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Never underestimate the “weaker sex”.

They couldn't accelerate more quickly. What made them difficult to hit was that their max speed was lower than the stall speed of a Me 109 or a Fw 190, flying at treetop level. Made it almost impossible to get behind them for long enough to line up a shot, otherwise you'd stall your plane and crash, or overshoot them and fly right past. They were also more maneuverable than either of the German planes. The Luftwaffe ended up resorting to using their own 1930s era biplanes to conduct similar tactics in night attack groups. The Go 145, and the Ar 66.

Historic fact: The story of the Russian female pilots of the 588:th bomber regiment. Their nickname “Night Witches” comes from the characteristic sound of their bomb planes that was all that could be heard during their nightly raids since they set their engines to idle and would glide through the night to their target. This sound brought the enemies thoughts to the broomsticks of witches, and they called them “Nachthexen”.

Imagine how much that would fuck with the people who survived a Night Witch raid, one moment, utter silence, then the sound of canvas in the breeze, and then fire, death, and explosions all around you. After that, how many random things in the night would sound like the Night Witches had come again? Every stray breeze, every flag flapping in the wind, the silhouette of a large bird at night, any of these things might make you think you're about to be bombed again. Good look ever getting a good night's sleep ever again

Also, the po-2's didn't have any weapons on board (besides the bombs) and it's engine would sound like a sewing machine. The Germans who heard the engine would know it was them and could hear it from a distance only for it to go silent or a moment.. until the sound of the aircraft glide could be heard. At that point it would have been too late.
@commandoclo
@commandoclo 4 жыл бұрын
The thing that gets me is I did gliding back when I was learning to fly in the cadets. You have a tiny biplane with no engine at all pulled up by a bigger aircraft to altitude and then you glide down, relying entirely on your own ability to guide the glider without any power. It’s terrifying. I was doing that at 17-18, around the same age a lot of the night witches were BUT I was in a modern glider, with a parachute, wasn’t climbing out on the wings to drop bombs and didn’t need to restart an engine asap midflight while being shot at. Nothing but the utmost respect for anyone capable of doing that.

Wow! Such a powerful song about legendary regiment 588! I don't know if you people know, but as the planes were too damn loud, they would turn off the planes and glide on air current. In addition to this, these badass ladies climbed onto the wing of a plane and detached bombs by hand because sometimes bombs wouldn’t release. The commander, Irina Sebrova, flew over 90 day and 1000 night missions. Oh, and they had no parachutes...

Indeed, you are correct. I found an interesting post about it: "Nadia Popova explained in an interview several years ago that they flew without radar, guns and radio. They simply had maps and a compass. To save weight, they also flew without parachutes, so if you were downed, that was it. She went on to say: “When you looked out to see the target better, you got frostbite. Our feet froze in our boots, but we continued flying. There was no time to give way to emotions. Those who gave in were gunned down and they were burned alive in their aircraft, as they had no parachutes.” And the bonus: "Not only did all three units have women pilots, but the engineers and ground crew were also women."

As a result, almost the untrained women and girls were given the oldest aircraft capable of flying, collected from anything, and instead of bombs they gave a self-igniting prototype of napalm. One of the pilots told me that if the Nazis caught them during the day, the pilots were mocked to begin with, giving them the opportunity to choose exactly how they would be killed.

You know, they werent very effective unit in terms of actual damage, one heavy bomber raid would inflict more damage than 20 night withches operations. But their raids were devastating for enemy morale. Imagine how it feels to never be safe from the sudden death caused by a silent bomber, no matter day or night, clear skies or heavy cluds. You went to bushes to pee- boom- you are dead. You just finish your chores and went to bed- boom- you are dead. You were brushing your teeths in the morning- boom- you are dead. They ofc could shoot these biplanes down with AA-guns or fighter crafts could track these slow-pacing planes and down them, but never before the bombs fell. Never.
@Weffi76
@Weffi76 5 жыл бұрын
actualy most of the times, they could not, becuse theese planes had such a low stall speed, that most air craft at that era, could not even hit them, becuse they did fly past them before that, whit no chance to stay on their tail to aim, AA guns did work to some extent, but AA guns are desinged again to attack planes on higher altitudes, meening trying to hit a low flying plane was way harder or close to impossible at times, specialy at night you could not hit anything, though if you did hit one of those planes, most of the times, it did blow to peaces totaly.
@steirqwe7956
@steirqwe7956 5 жыл бұрын
@@Weffi76 You are wrong about some things. First of all yes- biplanes has significantly lower stall speed than fighter crafts but that doesn't mean they were hard targets, in fact the opposite- slow biplane is easy target for fighter plane that can freely climb at higher altitudes and attack it from above, being free to repeat if nessesary. Second- yes some AA guns such as famous german '88 flak canon were specifically designed to fight high altitude targets, but there were other types of AA guns designed to fight low altitude targets like attack planes or scout planes. Namely quad machineguns armed with incendiary ammunition. These could turn biplane like this into wreckage with a half-second second "Burp". So flying in one of these birds was really dangerous, as soon as you are detected you basically doomed.

They painted their planes black and cut the engines miles from the target and glided the rest of the way. The only sound anyone would hear was the scream of the bombs falling, and the only time they were seen was when they were silhouetted against the moon, that's why the Germans called them witches. They only flew at night and were gone before anyone who was left alive could react. The light canvas planes meant they could glide for hundreds of miles with no prop, there was never any noise for people to hear to react and man AA emplacements.

Командир - Марина Раскова, герой Советского Союза avatars.mds.yandex.net/get-zen_doc/108872/pub_5c8c628067b81d00b2379768_5c8c6ca358588900b4310a23/scale_1200

Just imagine, you've got a historically legitimate reason for an all-female cast, doing badass things like flying without parachutes, turning off engines and gliding on air currents with old WW1 planes to surprise the enemy, climbing onto the canvas wings to manually detach bombs that failed to launch... (Before the war these machines were trained pilots). No radio, and armored backs of the chairs that can protect the crew from bullets with a low-powered engine, which could reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The plane was not the bomb Bay, the bombs were suspended in the bomb racks directly under the plane of the aircraft. No sights, we have created them ourselves and called PPR (piece of cake). The number of bomb load was varied from 100 to 300 kg. In average, we took 150-200 kg. This song does not honor women pilots in World War 2. It honors the Soviet Bomber regiment the Night Witches. A group of female pilots who flew the Po-2 biplane light bomber in the Second World war. They would do light bombing missions flying low and slow. This bomber was designed in 1933. The Po-2 had almost no radar signature due to its wood and canvas frame. And its low speed made many commanders dismiss the crafts as civilian. When intercepted, they would fly a few feet over the trees, causing some fighters crashed (including during the Korean war, an F-86 Saber, making the Po-2 to the only biplane to claim a kill on a jet).

The song mentions 588th regiment as that was the most successful regiment of Night Witches, but that does not mean that it doesn't honour the rest. In Aces of Exile they mention 303rd, 310th, and 401st squadrons, but that does not mean that the song does not honour all other foreign squadrons that fought in the RAF during the Battle of Britain.

The canvas planes they flew were very light and carried small payloads, so they didn't cause as much damage as larger bombers. But! Their planes could for some time glide through the air with engines turned off. They literally flew to the target in silence and darkness and appeared seemingly out of nowhere, turning their engines on at the last moment. This was both scary and badass - especially considering that those canvas planes had no armor at all.

Well, i mean, it would still alert german soldiers at night so they would still lose sleep while losing men at the same time though the damage wouldn't be big they will irritate the german army enough to go crazy and question their desicions
