While the British were already dying by the thousands in the trenches in Western Europe, their high command decided to try to break the stalemate with an attack on the Ottoman Empire in the Dardanelles. This is the first episode on the Sabaton song Cliffs of Gallipoli about the Allied landings on the shores off Gallipoli.

When Indy talked about this battle from week to week in Great War, that really showed how long it actually was. I can't even imagine the suffering of those men there. About the song...I'm mezmerized, smitten and totally hooked on that guitar solo. So, I'm happy it ended up on the album. 🙂

The soldiers who couldn't believe they were actually getting evacuated kind of shows it. They had already accepted that Gallipoli would be their grave and had come to peace that they would die and many of them did. Many of them so young they couldn't even drink alcohol in America

It always amazes me when you hear these stories of an officer giving orders like "I'm not ordering you to fight, I'm ordering you to die" and none of these soldiers murders their CO, and so few flee that it's not even mentioned.

Turks are militarist nation. It was hard times that caused many brave men to shine. When you hear a commander, commanding its troops in the line on fire, going first and orders his men with such a inspirational way, you have no excuse to run away from defending your motherland.

Out of all the songs that Sabaton have sung, this on hits home the hardest. As there is a strong family connection with Gallipoli, because my mother's uncle was an original ANZAC since he was at the landing, got wounded, patched up, sent back and was then involved in the evacuation of the Australian forces from there. He was later sent to the Somme where he got killed. He was one of the "lucky" ones though, as his grave is marked. It is definitely on my bucket list to visit his grave and pay my respects from one militiary veteran to another. Thank you Sabaton, Indy and all the Sabaton History crew

I did some research on this at school and I read that the ANZACS were inserted in the wrong place, they were supposed to land about 1-3 miles further south, with one Royal Navy commander (Charles Dix) yelling 'Tell the colonel the damned fools have landed a mile north too far' Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure, that's just what I read when I was researching it at school (like 15-16 years ago)

Chris Langmann Pretty sure it is true... the bloody poms (Brits) put our forces (ANZAC) on the wrong beach, which was which was pretty much the beginning of the end. The whole campaign was a failure from the start and by the end, a complete waste of life, supplies, and time. The ANZACs were kept there pretty much as cannon fodder by British command... and should have retreated much earlier. But the stubborn poms kept the ANZACs there as thousands of men died completely in vain.

Yea they landed at the wrong beach which was heavily fortified and they were ordered by the British to run head first into machine guns hence "They knew they would die"

I only found out recently that a relative of mine was killed in action at Gallipoli, on the British side. RIP to all those lads who laid down their lives there.

You can not travel through any small town in NZ with seeing a memorial. In a lot of cases multiple members of a family are listed.

Kia ora from New Zealand. This is the ONE song I've been waiting to be covered on this channel, and its going to have TWO parts! Thank you so much for doing this. On ANZAC day (25 April, though its sometimes observed on 27 April), we have the "Dawn Parade" and get reminded of what happened there. It is regarded as one of, if not the biggest military defeats New Zealand has ever suffered. We will remember them.

This song is my favorite from the Art of War album. I've been fascinated by the Gallipoli campaign since I saw Peter Weirs' epic film, the miniseries ANZACS, and the recent Gallipoli miniseries and all the documentaries about the campaign. Thanks Joakim, Indy.

I'm so happy you guys are doing a Sabaton history episode on Gallipoli. And a 2-parter! I'm so happy! I'm the only one in my family who likes metal, and I've tried to get my family into Sabaton, and they like the history part of it - but their first questions they asked me was if there were songs or Sabaton History episode about Gallipoli - THE main thing most Australians are taught or even think about when someone mentions the world wars, along with the Kokoda trail, Simpson and his donkey, and the Unknown soldier. I now will have not 1, but 2 videos to show them, and maybe they'll understand why I love Sabaton's music and history channel so much. Thank you.

Cliffs of Gallipoli is one of my favourite songs, and you make two episodes about it? And let Joakim write more guitar solo! This one is AMAZING! I could listen it for hours! It's perfect, the beats that grow and grow each time, and the falling notes after that... the only defect is that it ends.

One of the most famous anti-war songs ever was written about this...Eric Bogle's "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda". kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hqxzmM6W1Lm4p5s.html. Also, there were quite a few Irish in the British Army who also died at Gallipoli, who's time might have been better spent at home given the events of the following year :). Perhaps the greatest Irish Rebel Song ever, The Foggy Dew, references it: "It was was better to die 'neath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sud el Bar".

Just observing that the "Great War 2" album track list does not include Shores of Gallipoli. Not only did Indy tease the release of the new album expertly but I can only assume that has been pushed back to be on "Great War 3" in 2024!

General Birdwood was highly regarded by the Aussies. He was telling a story to other (British) officers when he was in the trenches. An Aussie said to him "Birdy get your fucking head down!" The officers then asked him what he did, expecting him to say that he got up the soldier. "I got my fucking head down!"

@@campincarl567 Australian federation didn't occur until towards the end of the second Boer war, troops from Australia served as separate colonial contingents under British command.

@@campincarl567 You can go back further to the New Zealand Maori Wars when an Australian contingent was dispatched to fight on the side of the New Zealand colonials. Other than that individual Australians fought as members of the British Armies. I can't find the source but read somewhere some Australian born fought in the Crimean War.

My GCSE History teacher's Grandfather fought at Gallipoli. He was shot (in the head I think) almost instantly but survived laying face down in the sand. He was found when a soldier turned him over to find him alive. If that didn't happen he would have died there. Its something that really hits home about the scale of the War.

The Royal Dublin Fusiliers were there too, on the first day they were so badly damaged by the fighting that they were amalgamated into the Royal Dubsters. The Irish were also the first out onto their beach. No one remembers our boys out there.

My favourite Sabaton song and basically the one that first got me to listen to Sabaton. The solos, tempo changes and lyrics combined with the words of Atatürk makes it a really great song and really brings forth the message of the futility of war and the human aspect of it all.

I descovred recently my great grandfather was one of the few suvivors of his regiment. Only thoes who suvived were injured in the first charge, the rest were killed. If my great grandfather wasn't shot and subsequently lost his leg, my family wouldn't be here. He rarely talked about the war but did say he was glad he was shot before he had to shoot someone else.

At the start when Joakim said "is a tribute for those who fought and died" the song should have picked up there with "in vain, how many wasted lives how many dreams did fade away..."

Remember Britannic and Aquitania? They were assigned to the Dardanelles Service from Liverpool to Mudros. This ran fresh troops to the Battle of Gallipoli and taken home were the sick, wounded, and dead. HMHS Aquitania (originally from Cunard) and HMHS Britannic (originally from White Star) were the biggest floating hospitals yet built. In fact, Britannic - the youngest sister of "Old Reliable" Olympic and "Unsinkable" Titanic - was the biggest ship yet afloat. Her wreck remains today the largest passenger shipwreck in the world. Also interesting to note: Both Britannic and Aquitania sailed beside their older sisters Mauretania and Olympic, as the latter were also assigned the Dardanelles run.
